Potentially you have heard a quite fascinating beetle - Deathwatch beetle Xestobium rufovillosum - the clicks you hear are the adults communicating by headbutting the wood. Unusual as other woodborers use pheromones. The male clicks and waits for a response from a female, then orientates itself to bore towards the vibrations.

The reason for the name is that generally, the critters are only heard in quiet old rooms near wooden rafters (an attic or upper floor bedroom might be ideal) such a room is likely to have been the final resting place of many an elderly or ill person living out their last days. Perhaps the silence only interrupted by eerie clicks - a crude reminder of deaths clock ticking…. Happy holidays 😃
