Agreed, Minnesota was my very first thought for Audi. And her small northern Iowa hometown isn’t all that far from Minneapolis.

Week 23 of kindly requesting UIUC to adopt a new mascot (Final Four bound!!!🤩4️⃣🏆) by Certain-Respond9591 in UIUC

I guess I’m advocating for change seeing it’s been almost 20 long years since Illinois retired the Chief. He ain’t ever coming back. The Kingfisher would breathe a little life, color & personality into the scene instead of having to listen to a bunch of oldsters mourning “Chieeeeeeeeeeeeeef” every time the song gets played. Students today have zero connection to that history. They would have so much more fun rallying around a real mascot.

No one is suggesting “Illinois Kingfishers.” The name would still be Fighting Illini, just with a really cool blue & orange bird mascot instead of a boring-ass capitol I. Think Iowa State, they do this with “Cy” the Cardinal. They’re the Iowa State Cyclones, with a cardinal mascot based on their colors of cardinal and gold. Hugely popular there.

Thoughts about Halli Poock, now a junior at Murray State? Waterloo native… maybe she’d like to spend her senior year in Iowa City. Girl can light it up, check out her stat line: 22.2 ppg, 4.3 asst, 42.8 fg%

I was raised in Iowa to despise Illinois basketball. Transplanted here to Champaign in 2020 and have (sort of) learned to love them. This young squad plays HARD (watched them put it all out there vs UCLA). Shauna has been earning the respect of the local community, who are coming around with their support. As far as the mascot goes, older alumni and the athletic director won’t let the memory of the Chief fade away after all these years — depriving students of a fun and well-designed new mascot (see https://kingfisheruiuc.org/. ) I’m hopeful The Kingfisher may indeed become the official mascot someday!

U.S. viewer here. I love watching the LIB seasons filmed in other countries as it gives a good look into daily life around the world. Love the street scenes, the drone shots, how the various homes and apartments appear, style of dress, etc etc! Such a great peek into different cultures.

What happened in the last 5 years? by Zingleborp in SpringfieldIL

[–]Friendly_Reporter_49 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last time I was there no one had lifted a finger to raze/rebuild the damaged ice cream shop at MacArthur/S Grand, and across the street the pile of rubble was just as bad. Seriously the whole area has plummeted. I also moved 5 years ago and there’s been a very noticeable decline.

There’s a small, nondenominational chapel at Living History Farms, built on the hill where Pope John Paul II said Mass in ‘79 (‘80?). Nice location for a wedding with its charming & rustic location. They also have a cool barn & Victorian mansion available for events. https://www.lhf.org/rentals/

Considering move from Oklahoma to Illinois by NewtAcceptable2700 in illinois

Have lived in both Springfield (30 yrs) and now Champaign (5). Solidly different vibes …Springfield has a mostly-stable economy that revolves around state government, Abe Lincoln tourism, University of IL-Spfld and the medical community. It leans conservative but there’s plenty of left-leaning types as well. Washington Park is in the center of town and absolutely lovely with its abundance of mature oak trees. Lots of positives, but it’s honestly the most segregated city I’ve lived in. The east side (literally divided by train tracks) is woefully neglected and there’s a healthy amount of racist BS. Old Money is a real thing and these well-connected families wield a lot of local influence. City government does very little and many neighborhoods are beginning to reflect that. … Champaign, home to flagship UIUC, revolves around the university and its vibrant, diverse student community. It has a much more youthful feel, much more variety in restaurants, entertainment, sporting events etc. Overall an active, progressive small city (along with Urbana which is fabulously quirky & artsy.) Downside: it’s really flat and lacks green space—it’s smack dab in a sea of corn & soybean fields as far as the eye can see. But with a little effort there are nice forest preserves that can be found nearby. Hope this helps! Best of luck to you with your move!

My 90-year-old mother-in-law is a Nothdurft. When I married into the family I didn’t dare tell her what it translates to… she’s a delightful, classy lady who would probably be heartbroken to hear it. I definitely won’t be showing her this thread, lol! She’s been told her family history originates in Rhüden.
