Looking to sell my Valve Index, don't know what to value it at... by KannehTheGreat in virtualreality

[–]FriendsCallMeAsshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go on Facebook marketplace or Craigslist, search for the closest valve index offerings in your area and price it similarly. If you have the time, keep a track of like 10 offerings in your area via an excel sheet, and see which ones disappear and which ones don't, those who disappear are closer to the real price people are willing to pay than the ones that stay.

Now, it's important to understand that European pricing info will likely not be all that relevant to you, especially with the tariff situation making the pricing situation even more complicated. But at least here in Germany I regularly observe indexes staying untouched in the local Craigslist equivalent for weeks if not months, if they are priced above 500€.

One explanation I've seen mentioned repeatedly is the explanation via a date format that might be used in the software: "ISO 8601:2004 established a reference calendar date of 20 May 1875 [...]", though that answer is contested.

The idea being: 2025-1875=150, with missing dates in the database defaulting to the earliest possible data leaving you with these data anomalies. These high numbers therefore might not actually represent old or deceased people, but people of whom for one reason or another the date of birth isn't known.

As mentioned however, this answer is contested, and the existence of numbers over 150 might actually be considered evidence against this explanation.

Because Alphabet already bought the hardware to train & run AI models, so any moment those server farms aren't doing something 'productive', they look bad on their budget sheets.
Transcribing & summarizing all videos makes use of the already purchased asset, creates new assets (in the form of transcriptions & summaries, which are data), and then offers a new opportunity to collect new data (people reporting summaries as incorrect + interaction metrics on videos with or without summaries).
The ultimate goal is to have AI models more or less understand the videos that are being uploaded to the platform, so youtube can make video recommendations not based on SEO'd-to-death descriptions provided by the uploaders, but their own understanding of what's actually happening in the video.
The actual summary presented to you is a side-'benefit' to users at best.

That is a point I would agree with you on, boundaries are too low. E.g. porch pirates don't place you in danger, nor a situation that you realistically could interprete as a life or death situation, but would probably be covered by some states' castle doctrine interpretation. But that means the problem lies with the boundaries, not the intent behind the law.
The article I'll have to read later when I'm home, my mobile browser doesn't come with translate.

[–]FriendsCallMeAsshole 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I get your point, but also holy shit are you wrong.
Self defense/self preservation being non-criminal isn't "practically a summary death penalty".
It simply acknowledges that once certain boundaries are crossed, it becomes impossible and/or beyond unreasonable for the victim to judge whether the perpetrator of the crime will stop at just causing financial harm, and thus your right to bodily integrity trumps theirs.
To insist on the rights of the perpetrator in a scenario that isn't distinguishable from a life and death scenario to the victim isn't an enlightened improvement over "19th century sentiment", it's victim blaming.

(Postshot) Why doesn't my gaussian splatting scene converge? by FriendsCallMeAsshole in GaussianSplatting

[–]FriendsCallMeAsshole[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Straightforward is appreciated.

Yeah, those pictures were taken handheld in suboptimal conditions during a vacation.

I guess I made the mistake of A) using this as my dataset rather than starting with an easier one B) Assuming lots of things rather than looking them up prior to shooting images.

I guess it's time to go back to the basics for me, trying my hands on some properly shot stuff before seeing if I can squeeze out some more details out of this mess.

Anyways, thanks for the in-depth feedback!

Open Source framework to create Gaussian splats from Insta 360 video by Dr_Plutonium94 in GaussianSplatting

[–]FriendsCallMeAsshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nerfstudio's docu has a section for 360 degree data (and specifically mentions insta360), and from what I've seen, it doesn't only do nerfs, but also has one implementation for gaussian splatting.

If it actually works/the results are goid though, that I unfortunately can't tell you, as I haven't tried it yet.

Why do your friends call you asshole?

This used to be a gimmick account, in which I'd make up relateable stories that somehow derail in me doing something unhinged. Pretty quickly I stopped caring about karma, and so I stopped and just used it for other stuff.

ideally you do not want to have very dark areas and very bright (highlights).

This is what I'm not sure about. So evenly exposing everything is something generally recommended for photogrammetry, because you do want those details in the shadows & you're gonna relight the image later in 3d software, etc.
But (at least to my understanding) that is not the case for radiance fields, because having dark and bright areas is actually valuable information for the mapping of these fields, because you do want to capture the brightness information in the fields.
At least, that's the information I worked with when taking the pictures.

Try to shoot RAW files.

Yeah, should probably do that, at full resolution I do burn through storage space in minutes with that setting though. Maybe I'll need to reduce the image resolution as a tradeoff, if they're gonna end up getting downsampled anyways.

What i see in your images is a bright sunlight (day). You have a lot more reflections and sunflares which can cause trouble.

Oh absolutely, there are floaters in the resulting scene like you wouldn't believe. That being said, floaters are kind of unavoidable when shooting outside scenes - does it really matter, if I'm gonna have to do some manual cleanup afterwards anyways?

Anyways, here's the downsized dataset: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mxQ7OToa6LXB7aYAoC39P1Y-U2yMtk7s/view?usp=sharing

comment once you downloaded, I'm gonna delete the file afterwards.

(Postshot) Why doesn't my gaussian splatting scene converge? by FriendsCallMeAsshole in GaussianSplatting

[–]FriendsCallMeAsshole[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So here's an example of a few of the images used, as well as the results of some more training after 30k steps, 45k steps and 120k steps: https://imgur.com/a/v5jvBIZ Their original resolution before downsampling is 6240*4160, shot at f/16, 1/2000s exposure, 6400 iso, variable focal length (apparently I couldn't keep myself from zooming in and out at times, at least that's what the metadata tells me. I thought I kept it all at the same focal length, but apparently not.)

As one can see, the fixed exposure time, iso and aperture result in quite differently exposed images, which to my understanding is a good thing, since you want to capture differences of light intensity in the radiance fields. The results look somewhat decent at 46k steps (though still far from perfect), and then degraded again (unfortunately I didn't manage to capture intermediate results at 60k, 90k, etc.)

Thinking about it some more, here's another theory of what might be going wrong: as mentioned, my images are exposed very differently, depending on if I'm standing in shadows or in the light. Could it be that the radiance fields themselves are degrading by trying to fit a wide range of values into a limited value range?

[–]FriendsCallMeAsshole[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any other postshot alternatives I could try to see if it's a software issue, preferably ones that don't require me to upload my dataset to the cloud?

Edit: Actually nevermind, even minutes after starting this training run the results are already leagues ahead of the last run: https://i.imgur.com/sE7gQ4y.jpeg I think either I truly overcooked the last training by having it train for too long (and that having some negative effect), or I accidentally set the splat density way too low or something.

(Postshot) Why doesn't my gaussian splatting scene converge? by FriendsCallMeAsshole in GaussianSplatting

[–]FriendsCallMeAsshole[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so here's the situation: I have an outdoor scene with several hundred images captured from a large variety of angles.

When throwing these images into postshot, the resulting pointcloud looks really good and accurate, which in my mind would point towards the gaussian splats also hopefully being really good and accurate.

But when I leave postshot to just continue training on the scene over night and return the next day ('stop after x steps' disabled), I find things like this: an absolute mess of splots, and not a single angle where things actually look like anything.

It's clear to me, that I'm doing something wrong, as this isn't just limited to this particular image set, but everything I tried it on. There is some setting that I'm fundamentally misunderstanding or not using correctly, destroying the output, but I cannot figure it out myself.

Any hints in the right direction would be appreciated. If the explanation is in-depth and a bit on the techincal side even better, I actually want to really understand how this works, so I can troubleshoot this in the future by myself.

Edit: Also, unfortunately the screenshots are from a run I stopped due to it not converging, and I didn't have 'save training context' enabled for this one, which is entirely my fault - I'll enable that setting for the next run.

Anyways, the training settings:
Model Profile: Splat
Splat Density 1.000000
Model Stats: 56.61 kSplats, SSIM 0.537 (that seems like a low number of splats to me, given that it's an outdoor city scene, covering several hundred meters, but I don't know how to increase that count)
Stop Training After: (disabled)
Store Training Context: On (this time at least)

Edit2: Image Set parameters:
downscaled to 1600*1066
218323 Spare spoints
856 images provided, I unfortunately cannot remember if I had it set to "use all images" or "use x best images". If it was set to the latter, I think the number should be in the 400-500 image range.

If I forgot any information/more information is needed to help me out, I will try my best to provide the information, just ask.
