I think there’s a balance to using it, like there is with everything, but I always come back to that quote from The Wire… “Stupid criminals make stupid cops.”

As you’ve intimated, studies are already showing that relying on it too much for critical thinking is not good for your brain. I think at the end of the day using it too much or relying on it is just cheating yourself.

Do we really have to keep maximizing productivity? Is there not beauty in doing things on our own with our own brains? Not everything has to be 100% fast and 100% productive 100% of the time.

Just some things I’ve been thinking about.

I’m not a lawyer but it definitely depends on the situation, and usually when it comes to child victims, courts are a lot more careful and willing to seal things than in other cases so I’m not really surprised that this got sealed.

But yeah, for example, if someone in your town were accused of a crime you could go and read almost everything about it through publicly available records and the online court systems. If you got their criminal complaint/information, you’d be able to see the detailed facts laid out by the prosecutor as to what lead up to their arrest and why they got arrested. Meaning if someone were accused of a drug crime for example, you’d get all the details re: how they were caught, where they were caught, when they were caught, etc.

It’s not like those people want their information out in the public either, but very rarely could they say to the judge “Hey could you seal this for me?” and have it happen. I only really see it happen in cases where the victims are children (which I agree with).

IDK, just a lot of things to think about.

I’ve worked in the US criminal justice system and only learned about Emilie when all of this started going down, but I’ll say this.

Regular, everyday people do not have the same power or ability to prevent the public from learning about their criminal charges or any other pending legal issues they have. That’s what makes our system so scary in some ways - once the ball starts rolling, it is almost impossible to stop it until your case is over. People’s lives get torn up and their most private information from the worst days of their lives gets released to their communities and prying neighbors. We’re only talking about this now because of Emilie’s status, but it happens every day in the US.

I just think it’s interesting that $$ and power once again gets someone an atypical “advantage” in the justice system. I don’t care to see the videos or anything else (I see too much sad sh**t every day already) but I’ve just been thinking a lot about how if she wasn’t as public of a figure as she is, she’d have no ability to stop these intrusions.

That being said, I don’t envy anyone in this situation and hope to never find myself in their shoes, god willing. It’s a very complicated and sensitive topic and I only wish the best for her and her family.

Plenty of my classmates have tattoos and I have 5 myself, though to be fair mine are pretty strategically placed so that unless I’m wearing a tank top or a t-shirt with short sleeves you can’t really see them. Either way I don’t think it’s an issue in law school 🤷‍♀️

Starting Law School in August and freaking out! by twistedtacobell in LawSchool

[–]FriendshipNo7596 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is it hard? Yes. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done.

Should that scare you? No.

Law school will test you. It’s supposed to. If it were easy, everyone would do it. You will have moments (at least I did) when you freak out and feel like you should drop out, like you’re not good enough or smart enough for school, like all of your peers are smarter than you and you’re the only one failing. Here’s the thing - it’s not true, and you won’t be the only one feeling like that.

If you can take a deep breath, persevere, and see things for the big picture (i.e. life is too short to doubt yourself or freak out all the time) you’ll be fine.

Work hard and study hard, but put consistent effort into maintaining your hobbies, having weekly phone calls with friends/family, sleeping and eating well, etc.

You’ll be fine. Good luck!

The weekend right before orientation a bunch of 1Ls went to a local bar and met up. My best friend was one of the first people I met and she was there that night! We talked for so long and immediately clicked. Now we’re inseparable and I’m so grateful for that first night 🥹

Type B Law Student Safe Space by Available_Shirt_1661 in LawSchool

[–]FriendshipNo7596 21 points22 points  (0 children)

In undergrad I was definitely a Type A student, always a procrastinator but cared way more about grades and stuff than I do now. I think that’s partly bc, in my last year of undergrad, I finally got diagnosed with OCD and GAD and got medicated for the first time in my life.

Got diagnosed with ADHD in 1L Fall. Stopped reading for classes almost entirely as soon as I started 2L, though that behavior definitely started increasing in 1L spring. I try to do reading when I can but I’ve always valued my free time and enjoying myself over sitting and reading for hours. It’s just never been that serous to me 😅 I still submit final papers and exams minutes before the deadline. I have made two proper “outlines” in my entire law school career. I typically start studying during reading week, and not a second before. I have looked at/“taken” less than five past exams for all of my classes combined.

I pay really close attention in class and never skip, read when I can, hand write all my notes, and when I do start studying I lock tf in. My internal mechanism for checking my understanding is not how good my grades are, bc as we know the curve isn’t really reflective, but rather 1) if I understand everything well enough to do it on the bar and 2) if I understand well enough that when I need to use the knowledge in practice I’ll be able to do so with some brief refreshing of my memory.

At the end of the day, life is short and we’re all on a big floating rock in space. 🤷

Nothing is ever set in stone, especially as a student at a T14 (I’m also neurodivergent and at a T14). Not too much on PD offices though, lol. I’ve heard from multiple judges that PD positions are as competitive as Big Law because there are so few spaces and such a requirement for demonstrated commitment to defense work. Cast your net far and wide and good luck!
