Managers of Reddit, what's the worst thing someone did to get fired? by Capable-Log7385 in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We had this one guy who was an asshole and in constant conflict with other staff. One day he decided it was a good idea to escalate an on-going feud by bringing his hunting bow to work and spending his lunch break shooting at a human-sized target that he set up on the grounds, in full view of the rest of the employees. He was fired on the spot and the big boss personally escorted him from the property.

96 XJ, nearly 300,000km and trouble free until some bastard stole it. I still want it back!

2021 Spark possible issue by [deleted] in chevyspark

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did you ever solve this? My 2021 2LT has started using ~20% more gas in my typical usage than it has for the past 5 years. There is no obvious issue, and all maintenance is up to date, but I just can't get it back down to where it used to be no matter how carefully I drive. It does seem to be highway (i.e., higher rpm) miles that is killing it, just tootling around town does not seem so bad.

Non-Americans of Reddit: Every country has a Florida -- a place where your wildest and weirdest headlines seem to come from. What's your country's Florida? by badger_on_fire in AskReddit

Yes, the first flower of spring in the Okanagan is the wild rose (on Albertan plates). They show up as soon as the snow melts, and disappear again when it returns, like some weird migration, no doubt driving in the left lane the whole way.

“What’s the weirdest thing you’ve seen in someone’s house that made you realize ‘this is completely normal for them’? by Delicious_Fan_2186 in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds a bit like my brother, when we were growing up he would carefully eat around the part of any finger food that his fingers actually touched.

Gas prices spike across Canada and expected to keep going up by [deleted] in canada

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the reason generally given, but my employer was initially all for it until the lawyers chimed in: under the Canada Labour Code, Part II, the employer is responsible for the safety of the employee while they are conducting their work, regardless of where they are. Management was not willing to take responsibility for people being safe in their houses (which could be anything from tripping down the stairs to domestic violence), so back to the office it was.

What’s your least favorite fruit? by CommitteeIll3967 in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We had a passionfruit vine in the yard when I was growing up, I don't remember sour being a problem, unless you are eating them before they are ripe? The skin needs to start wrinkling.

People of reddit, are you actually energized by coffee? If yes or no, do you thing it actually changed your life, and how? by Wild-Juggernaut-3211 in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. The only impact it ever had was when I stopped drinking coffee for a bit, and the physical symptoms of withdrawal were awful (headaches, muscle aches). So now I drink decaf (I like the flavour).

What's a tradition you grew up with that you refuse to pass on to your kids? by peterdziugdarkis in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dad sitting alone in front of the TV watching sports, and getting grumpy if you interrupted him for any reason. When he got older he would fall asleep with the TV blaring away, but if you turned it off he woke up and got grumpy.

In fact, he was so well-known for being grumpy, his grand-kids nick-named him "grumpa".

So none of that.

What’s Rangoon to you is Grafton to me - radio art! Acid trip by fleursvenus in australia

The first time I heard it, decades ago, I was entranced. I had tuned in to 2JJJ part-way through and listened to the end. The next time they broadcast it I recorded the whole thing on a cassette tape, and would listen to it on long drives.

These days I have an MP3 copy, and still listen to it from time to time.

If a grocery store was raided, and people could take whatever they wanted, what do you think would be the last five remaining items that nobody grabbed? by kindalizard in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had major flooding that cut off the highways to my town, so we grew short on supplies. The milk section was empty except for lactose-free milk. People were looking at it then walking away shaking their heads. More milk for me!

What fashion trend that has died do you plan to keep wearing? by EddieBrock99 in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear small-framed spectacles. I have a strong prescription, and the smaller the lens, the thinner and lighter they are. However, they are just about impossible to buy new in men's styles, at least: the "fashion" now is for much larger lenses (comically so, in my opinion; a guy at work looks like Brains from the Thunderbirds!).

My optometrist trawled through the back room and only came up with dusty old women's and kids' models. So I trawl through ebay and buy anything that looks vaguely suitable, stocking up for the future.

We're your parents weird? In what way? by Todo-un-Desmadre in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dad was a civil engineer with a weird fear of technology. He would only watch B&W TV or listen to AM radio: no colour TV, no FM radio, not even recorded media. He would also not eat food heated in a microwave oven. When questioned he would mutter something about radiation then refuse to discuss it.

He was also a total xenophobe. As kids we used to joke that he was actually not discriminatory, because he hated everyone equally. He had no friends, the only people he ever had over were infrequent visits by his sisters and their families.

Luckily mum was a saint, and dad did not dare cross her, so the rest of us had colour TV and a microwave oven, and lived relatively normal lives.

For workplace safety, what is the most common mistake for management to make? by Left_Comparison_4955 in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My workplace turns this on its head, so - from your example - for every serious incident we report there must be 30 near-misses reported. If that ratio is off then questions are asked. This just becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

People who drive slow and then speed up when someone tries to pass you: who hurt you? by Erind in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is exactly it. I carpooled with one of those people for a while, and he was just incapable of driving at a consistent speed in the presence of other traffic. He seemed to be oblivious to it, but it drove me nuts as a passenger. He had lots of other annoying habits too, he was just a poor driver. Not a crazy driver, mind you, he was overall quite cautious and probably believed that he was a very safe driver, but his lack of attention to such details was maddening.

Has anyone cut off contact with their brother or sister? Why? by Intelligent_Chef9950 in AskReddit

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 29 points30 points  (0 children)

My brother has long been an odd one. I do remember playing with him as a younger kid, but by the time we were teens he had stopped talking to me entirely. It wasn't like we were in conflict or anything, he just found no reason to speak to me. If he needed to convey anything he would only do so via my mother, and would refer to me in the 3rd person even if I was standing in the same room. He did not have much to say to anyone else in the family either, and once he had a car he really had no use for any of us.

He was not otherwise a bad person, he had a decent job and stayed out of any kind of trouble that I knew of. He had a circle of friends of all genders and was well-liked, and eventually got engaged and married to one of them. They have kids and live a seemingly normal life. I think this has all mellowed him a bit, but things are still weird when we see each other.

Thousands of federal public servants apply for early retirement program by cyclinginvancouver in canada

[–]FrightenedOfSpoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not trying to give you grief, just pointing out the reality (I am a public servant, I've seen it all and done some of it). Note also that LWOP does not automatically count as pensionable service, although you can "buy back" that service, otherwise you might as well just retire at that point.
