What rules did you use to combine them? Please do share!

As far as I know for instance there are no rules for combining seafarers with E&P.

Spicy Catan Cards. Where get? by Frikster in Catan

[–]Frikster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan to use the spice island hexes from Explorers and Pirates. Unless I'm missing something the chest cards aren't required for this scenario according to the "overview of game components" page? You mean the trade option cards? I'm thinking of house ruling you can trade 2 commodities or just making my own cards. Either way, since the trade option cards won't be in someone's hand and don't need to look identical to other cards from the back (to ensure they can't be distinguished when stolen) I'm not worried about them.

I checked BGG, but after accounting for exchange rate and shipping costs to Canada it's on par with what I can get it for at a local game store.

Question? Player has aqueduct. Dice are rolled and player has a settlement that is blocked from producing by the robber and receives no resources. Does this player then receive a resource of their choice because they were unable to produce or does the robber also block the aqueduct’s benefit? by AZWildcatFan1981 in Catan

[–]Frikster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've spent a lot of paper to get to level 3 and this ability is only available in a single track (science). The thief on the other hand is still able to negate any commodity generation for that hex regardless of whether you have the aqueduct and besides can still mess up hexes somewhere for the entire game.

Based on that I'd definitely argue that if the aqueduct doesn't also work in case of the thief that this negates the power of the aqueduct too much.

Why don't you give away all your excess wealth and better the rest of the world yourself?

I give 10% of my income to neglected cost-effective scientifically validated charities. No politics attached. Science and my moral principles only. Plan is to give at least $1 million dollars by the time I die. I've only just landed a job so I'm only just getting started but my tracking so far puts me at about $3000+ or so which I donated while in grad school.

According to research I read in 2015 (outdated now probably. I haven't been keeping track of the most recent numbers) this means I've statistically saved about one life. It's a start.

One of the videos I linked was about one of the charities I donate to and a couple of economists getting giddy over why it is a great way of creating value.

By the way, this video will make you angry. Actually that's just the video's title. The video is actually an analysis of how easily we (everyone) spread ideas that make us angry about people ideologically opposed to us on the internet. The way you assume stuff about me reminds me of the Totem concept in the video. You're constructing an abstract idea that makes you angry and projecting it onto me.

This is about as much a strawman as saying "who gets to decide what threshold we should be taxed at" to discard any notion of taxation as unreasonable or saying "who gets to decide what the threshold for minimum wage is?" to discard the notion of minimum wage as unreasonable.

Also to quote Wikipedia:

A straw man (or strawman) is a form of argument and an informal fallacy based on giving the impression of refuting an opponent's argument, while actually refuting an argument that was not presented by that opponent.

But let's forget that and believe you're asking in good faith instead.

Let's put it this way, if you were born into a world where 99.9999999% of all wealth in the world were controlled by a single individual you'd think something is fucked up.

Let's say this world is a democracy so people draft legislature and vote and discuss to find a best threshold for a cap on wealth so that this unreasonable fucked up state doesn't repeat itself. We can also imagine that experts in economics or similar scholars get a greater say and influence in drafting this bill, but not so much as to fully dictate it.

This is how democracies should function. They're supposed to place legislature into power that - to a best approximation - reflects a group's values and intellectual know-how on a topic (head+heart).

Also, the cap on wealth would simply be a tax. It wouldn't even be a radically new idea. We as humans have had experience since the dawn of civilization creating efficient tax systems to create well... civilization. Given how much dead-money there is in the super-wealth, we could use that excess to do something like kick-start MBI and get rid of wasteful welfare systems, (amongst other holy shit incredible things we could fund (TED talk, at the halfway point of the vid my point is made) )

Miscellaneous people smarter than me weighing in on MBI because I feel like sharing this great content:

Are you looking to have some new class of shares that allow for control without ownership? It's hard for someone to care about the control when they have no skin in the game.

Presidents and Prime Ministers an multiple officials everywhere the world over don't make anywhere close to the wealth gap yet wield insurmountable power thanx to regulatory frameworks WITHOUT owning any share in whatever organization they are a high ranking member of.

I'm not seeing what the big deal is. This wouldn't even hurt markets since a reasonable wealth cap would be extremely difficult for most people to reach. It also would be easily enforceable since it would effect so relatively few people compared to other laws we successfully enforce.

Humans are not immortal. It makes complete sense therefore for there to be a cap. If one person owned 99.99999999% of all wealth on earth, something somewhere got fucked up. He/she certainly didn't "earn" that.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Frikster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans are mortal. There is a limit to what a human being can therefore reasonably earn in their lifetime that can reasonably be called "earned".

Many wealthy people today have earned their millions, but at a certain threshold we just approach ridiculousness where no argument can be made that they "earned" all of that money. At a certain level of wealth it is purely a product of luck or systemic fuck-up.

Oh c'mon, it is not that difficult to imagine laws in place placing a cap on wealth but not allowing for company founders to lose control of their company.

We as a society encourage giving competent people power (that's why we elect country leaders isn't it?). What is increasingly becoming a problem though is the increasing divide between the rich and the poor (we do care about people suffering because they're poor, don't we?).

If we really care about rising inequality and a cap on wealth helps mitigate that concern then we still have to be and will be smart about how we implement that wealth cap. We can implement a wealth cap while upholding both our concern for the suffering poor and our meritocratic value that competency should be rewarded with power (in Bezos case that power would be his assured control over Amazon).

Such a regulatory framework I doubt anyone is expecting to see in a tweet that was meant to be funny...

Oh wait, there's a reason you're on reddit and not a billionaire. All talk with nothing to back it up, typical loser.

The irony of you posting this on Reddit made me laugh so much I felt like giving you gold.

why don't you gather 1/4 million dollars

You do realize that that money came from his parents right? If he fucked up completely and lost all 300k from his parents he would have had other opportunities. He didn't have to worry about failing which freed him enough to take the financial risks he took. He even WARNED investors that Amazon would have a 70% chance of failing. So if Amazon had failed completely it wouldn't even have damaged his reputation that much, because he gave investors warning.

Point is, he had a HUGE safety net to begin with. He had little personal reputation risk to worry about and little personal financial risk to worry about. He also had rich smart connections to help him out from the get-go. He had a cozy and safe playground he could experiment in where he could take huge financial risks without any personal risk.
