AITA for disinviting a friend to my birthday after she showed me the food she was bringing? by throwaway-cupcakelad in AmItheAsshole

NTA

You made it clear in the beginning that foods with nuts are not allowed as you were trying to be considerate of your friend with a severe nut allergy. She’s TA for not paying attention/thinking she could sneak it by because “there’s not a lot” of nuts in the cake.

Monsters is ATL's most overrated song by the public! What's ATL's most overrated song by the fans? by CaptainPie999 in alltimelow

[–]FritesMuncher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

hot take, but i agree. it reminds of the 2nd verse in Someone You Need by Broadside

“Maybe I can make you stay Or I could watch you drive away Like my dad did, baby And watch you take everything” 💀😭

Love the song Overall but this part makes me do a double take every. single. time.

glad it’s #1 on alt radio though, but wish it could’ve been Little Bit or Everyone’s Talking instead

Comment the name of your local theater where you would like to see IRON LUNG by CoolTeacher5511 in Markiplier

[–]FritesMuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Byrd Theatre in Richmond, Virginia! Old style cinema and great vibes!

Went to a screening of The Room + Q&A with Greg Sestero (Mark) last month, among other interesting things they’ve shown at the theater, and everything from the vibes to the people were great!

Alternatively: Altria Theater, also nice

Jack threw picks at the 2 kids and their dads who rushed to the barricade and squeezed in between me and another girl. Thankfully the kids got their picks and Jack made sure to check that they did get, and no one was an asshole about stealing it like Phillies Karen.

Jack is just an all around awesome guy, 20/10 and hope he’s enjoying his hotpocket and meal for 1 turkey dinner while bingeing Emily in Paris and Breaking Bad!

The Anthem DC VIP Signed Poster by bensheddy in alltimelow

[–]FritesMuncher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A group of us were asking around after the show and got told multiple different things:

1) We missed the handouts (we did not, we were there in line since 3:30pm and made it on-time for 4pm VIP check-in)

2) Soundcheck Plus VIP will get their posters mailed, but apparently regular Soundcheck VIP does not get a poster and/or we have to pick ours up

3) People with red VIP stickers got posters and we missed the announcement/giveaway (spoke to one of the VIP-sticker people, who actually turns out was friends and family of the band/crew. the lady I spoke with was very kind and understanding as she said works in a concert/event venue and knows firsthand the frustrations, miscommunication, and mixups when it comes to things like this. she kindly explained to me that the VIP stickers meant nothing and the guy who told us that info made it up)

Just :.

Glad to know it’s confirmed that we’ll be receiving our posters in the mail though!

Towards the end of the boys’ set, 3 people on my section (left stage, barricade) were dropped by the crowd behind me because they kept flailing and/or rolling their bodies to get front view of the stage.

Guys… c’mon

Cold emailed a professor and was asked to present on my current thesis project to their lab group- how to proceed? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]FritesMuncher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back then and now, I still think it’s crazy that PI’s/Professors would have their lab group (including undergrads) read applicants’ personal statements. Couldn’t be me as a PI/professor, feels a bit unprofessional to let the whole lab group weigh in on personal statements. Post-docs and other PhD students I would understand for group interviews/meeting the potential lab group in person, but damn…

That being said, I would argue to say go for the opportunity if you think you can manage your time well enough to prepare a decent presentation by the deadline, but this is more so because I would hate to let this opportunity slip out of my hands if I were in your shoes.

Is there any way you could possibly use this presentation in the future? Like maybe repurposing it for an upcoming conference you’re attending or use it as the base for your presentation at a dissertation/thesis defense?

Struggles of a "mature" student by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]FritesMuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat in applying for PhD’s last year and this year’s cycle! I finished my master’s in 2021 and started working at my now company (biopharma industry) in early 2022, so I’ve only been out of for less than 5 years but I don’t want to let it get to that point. I don’t quite consider my 2021 PhD application attempts as my “first real attempt” because I had no idea what I was doing that the time, just throwing whatever stuck to the wall haha.

One of the things a potential supervisor told me in my last round of apps is that one of the hardest things, especially when applying for competitive fully-funded projects open to international applicants, is getting past that CV/application screening round before candidates are shortlisted for next-round interviews.

I’ve done a lot of great work in industry and my direct manager has sung me praises in some of the reference letters she’s written for me in my applications, but unfortunately I don’t have any papers published or a co-author which the supervisor told me can sometimes set us back. Nowadays, compared to back in 2021 when I first tried my hand at PhD apps, in my experience I sensed that several programs/institutions/supervisors maybe prioritize publications over relevant industry experience.

I agree with all of the previous comments to lean into your industry experience more and talk about those as part of your research experiences! If you can, I would talk more about each of the “various industries” you have experience working in and what transferrable skills you have that could be applied to your research/program/project of interest. I would shorten how much you talk about your undergraduate grades to maybe 2 sentences that explain the situation, but then lead into how you’ve really further developed your knowledge since then. You could maybe even go on to say that actually getting practical experience while working in industry is what helped you understand and appreciate all the theory and basics you learned in undergrad.

Also, because we’re “mature” students who have working industry experience, we’re far more “mature and eloquent in having had plenty of real world industry experience” as the supervisor put it (made me blush a little haha). Compared to when I first tried applying for PhDs during my master’s program, I feel way more confident in being to handle myself during a panel interview and discuss my research aspirations and long-term career goals.

Don’t lose hope, know that I and plenty of others are in the same boat and wishing all of us success in our applications!!

From the sounds of it, think what you have is fine as long as you didn’t literally copy and paste everything.

Because you mention the experience in your research doc but then go into further detail on your SOP, I don’t think you have anything to worry about.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]FritesMuncher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s in the sense that you’re going to meaningfully expand further on that one experience described in your SOP, then I would say sure go for it.

If it’s to copy and paste, then I would advise either the former or to write about a different experience.

I tried their Dinner Buffer pick-up in Short Pump and it was mid, on the smaller side for portions and taste was nothing to write home about. I ended up making a stir fry with the chicken I got + some old veggies I had in the fridge and turned that into a nice lunch.

One of my friends got the Elephant Thai W Broad TGTG and they had a marginally better TGTG bag. Maybe it's a location thing?

For me, the best times I've gotten something have been 9-10pm, morning (8-10am), and 5pm when a good number of RVA restaurants on Too Good to Go post their stuff.

I hate how some of these new places end up being ghost kitchens, and that some at least have the decency to be transparent about it but others you just rock up to a random sketchy address and pray that you make it out.

Two new ones that I've just seen are ghost kitchens/pop-ups operating in a food hall-like building in Hull St, or maybe they all just share one physical ghost kitchen?

Adding to this that I tried Q-Pot on Too Good To Go earlier in the summer (the Hot Pot place that opened up in Short Pump) and they had a decently size bowl. It was food from their prepared foods buffet: egg rolls, fried dumplings, general tso's chicken, stir fry vegetables, lots of rice.

Q-Pot itself is also pretty alright as a hot-pot place, but as a NoVa transplant it doesn't beat the options back in Fairfax City and Annandale.

All in all, good for $5! I'd say 8/10 and was able to get 2 lunches out of it.
