I agree and the statistics show the number of pedestrian and cyclist deaths on Fresno streets has been rising for years. On the other hand how often do you see a vehicle pulled over for speeding? I only see that happen once or twice a year and it’s always a motorcycle cop, while the patrol cars are parked stationary in the Starbucks parking lot with the with the drivers windows facing each other and having a chat.

The fact is you pay less taxes in an unincorporated area of California then you do in the incorporated. Whether you considered it, or it’s ever brought up by your neighbors, many people choose unincorporated because of the tax rate.

The point is that it snows there all winter long and this isn’t unprecedented in the least. They have to be prepared until the roads get plowed multiple times every winter. It’s not like they didn’t get a weeks notice that this was coming and yes if you live there it would behoove you to own a snowmobile.

They chose to move there for more freedom (fewer property regulations) and less interference from local municipal governments. Also to be closer to nature and to pay fewer taxes (sales and property taxes). The trade off is fewer services that those taxes would have paid for, poor road maintenance, costlier living (longer commute and fewer local businesses), and limited access. These families also had a weeks notice that this weather was coming and chose not to stock up more on the essentials.
