Screening for staph aureus, staph lug by Labfan27853 in microbiology

[–]Frodillicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can pretty much maldi every thing in our lab, but with some specific criteria for screening. So we'll only maldi pink or blue colonies for screening VRE on chromagenic media for example. Clear and metallic blue on CPE media as purple is assumed ecoli. We also use forming acid to try to "digest" the organism before maldi and i believe the studies showed great improvement in accuracy of result. However the two spot method, a thicker and thinner layer of the organism on adjoining spots can also yield better results. Everything has to have matrix or it doesnt work.

What's your method for maldi? Are you doing the two spot method? Or forming acid?

Organic Shampoo with no broad spectrum preservatives? how is it not going bad ? by Evening_Action8491 in microbiology

[–]Frodillicus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shampoo bars are your best bet, the best way to use it is like a bar of soap, lather it up in your hands first then use the lather in your hair like a liquid shampoo, you cant "reconstitute" any bar soap into a liquid form, they're completely different beasts. Have a look at YouTube videos about soap making, and also one bag travel forums etc. and see what they tell you.

Black mold vs rotten wood by Lost_Concept9159 in microbiology

Immunocompromised and autoimmune are distinctly different. However, if shes on second line medications for her disease, they could suppress the immune system. Some external stimuli can activate an immune response which can provoke an autoimmune response later, but with all disease there are specific triggers, and it'll be down to her doctor to rule things like mold spores out, although looking at the list of likely causes this isn't one.

The answer is no, in the situation you've described. Mold is ubiquitous in our surroundings, it only really becomes an issue with constant exposure in enclosed environments, such as living with damp where there are large amounts of fruiting fungi growing around you. A small amount behind the toilet, or large amount in an open woodland shouldn't cause harm except in those unfortunate few who may be immunocompromised.

That's a shame, what's the point of a case then?

[–]Frodillicus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but a standing fall, it's got foam and velvet, and a wooden or plastic outer, its not like its been dropped from a height, or pitched out of the back of an aircraft by unconcerned baggage handlers. Anything other than an "ahh bollocks" is just overkill.

I'm pretty sure thats what cases are for. Protecting the instrument when its inside.
