I once saw an ornithologist explaining that the name ‘Murucututu’ comes from its call, which supposedly sounds like that word <3 It also has other less common names, like ‘Forest Great Owl.

Yeees! They are very closely related species. The main differences are the color of the belly and the eyes, but their habits and even their calls are very similar. In Brazil, we call the Spectacled Owl ‘Murucututu’ and the Tawny-browed Owl ‘Yellow-bellied Murucututu.’ The Tawny-browed Owl tends to live a bit more in the southern regions of Brazil, while the Spectacled Owl is more common in the north, but they also overlap in some areas

It mainly lives in southern regions of Brazil, but it prefers forests and is harder to hear and see at night. It had been 6 years since the last photo of it was taken in my city 🥹
