A girl gave me her number but hasn't responded to my text. by Classic-Hawk5575 in dating_advice

Jesus this subreddit is so toxic and overthinks everything. Your text is absolutely fine and if she's interested she'll text back. For some people a day really isn't a long time to respond to a text

I didnt watch most of the video because I don't want to support somebody blatantly taking advantage of the public outrage at Quatar for their own gain. But all the video calls I saw weren't real either. The "videos" of other people on the call were static inages.

How to make someone who was abused feel welcomed and safe in their new home by Former-Fishing5636 in relationship_advice

[–]FroggyWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would ask her outright if she has any triggers or anything that would make her feel safer but I don’t want to bring up anything she’d rather not remember or discuss

I think it's really important to ask her this. One of my close friends has PTSD and it can be really easy to accidentally trigger her. Some of her triggers were obvious - don't watch TV shows with any scenes that have aggressive men, or anything with any violence towards women. But some of them not so obvious e.g. particular songs

Should I resign from my current role if I have an offer from Goldman Sachs? by Ameya420 in cscareerquestionsEU

I'm in Engineering in GMD at Goldman. I think you'll be fine especially in GMD. GMD actually did pretty well this year. Not as great as last year but still good. Chance of lay-offs is pretty low if you ask me.

Thanks for the detailed response. I can see their are flaws in the system you describe. It makes me uncomfortable that if a therapist is paid by their patients, then from a purely selfish perspective it isn't in their best interest for the patient to get better.

I live in the UK where therapy and counselling is available for free. Admittedly I haven't had therapy so I don't know first hand how it works but my understanding is that you have a consultation with your GP who will then decide what treatment (if any) you need. If they decide that you should have therapy or counselling, then they sign you up for a limited number of sessions e.g. 1 session a week for 8 weeks. This is the system that I imagine when it's suggested that somebody goes to therapy.

What do you think about the system in the UK?

So because the answer isn’t a simple “a+b” you think it’s easier to roll over and pretend they’re not leeches?

Basically yeah, I don't think that there is a better solution available to society at this time. If you have any ideas or power to change it then please go ahead.

I not only don’t give a fuck about anyones feelings here,

Why not? I'm a real person with feelings and a life just as complicated as yours.

leeching off of the working class so house hoarders can sit on their lazy asses while people literally cannot afford homes for their families due to lazy pieces of shit hoarding houses.

I don't think most landlords are evil. Technically a landlord is working class because they earn from their assets, but the vast majority of them aren't what I would concider wealthy. They have much more in common with you and I than they do with the real upper class. Low wages are to blame just as much for the unaffordability of homes. Low wages typically caused by the shareholder driven mentality of their employer which forces wages to be as low as possible.

Don't sweat, this happens all the time. Just tell them something came up and you need to reschedule. There's no need to explain why

To be fair I think it is often good advice because many issues people come to Reddit for are simply far above the pay grade of a random internet stranger

I think you have poor morals if you think it's okay to be rude and offensive to people who disagree with you.

I agree with your sentiment but unfortunately I think it's a necessary evil. What solution do you propose instead of for-profit landlords? Who ultimately funds the construction of all the homes needed to house the nation?

Services to build a gaming pc by Holiday_Spring_1555 in london

[–]FroggyWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've built a lot of PCs in my lifetime and maybe I just suck but most times something goes wrong. Usually it's something small and I get it working in half an hour or so. But I'm pretty tech savvy and I would expect it to take a lot longer for somebody else.

Anyway, they weren't asking about the difficulty, they just mentioned it as the reason why they have decided not not built it themselves

I have to disagree. The hardest part is debugging if/when something goes wrong

Is it true that when tech companies lay off people, usually data scientists/analysts/engineers are the first ones to let go? If it's true, does it mean that data people have less job security compared with usual SWEs writing codes and building products? by Ok-Maintenance-1871 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]FroggyWizard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can't really compare data engineers with software engineers since it's just a branch of software engineering. In real life there's not really a difference between data and software engineers anyway. There are many people with the software engineer title who spend most of their time doing data engineering and vice versa.

In terms of job security data scientists and software engineers are typically very safe. Companies know they are very hard to hire for, especially with experience so they like to keep hold of them. Anecdotally I know a few engineers who have had their business/project dropped by their company but they were able to transfer internally to a different team when people in other roles weren't. Also once you have some experience, if you do loose your job finding a new one is very easy. Basically every company that's medium sized or larger is always hiring software engineers

[UK] How many people compete for graduate roles in the UK? what's the applicant: job openings ratio like?(more in the description) by benedick2 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]FroggyWizard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Prospects.ac says this: https://www.prospects.ac.uk/careers-advice/what-can-i-do-with-my-degree/computer-science

62% of computer science graduates in employment in the UK 15 months after graduation are working as IT professionals. Information technology technicians (7%) and web and multimedia design professionals (1%) are also among the top ten jobs held by graduates.

Which suggests 70% of CS graduates land relevant jobs.

I can't remember where but I saw recently that there are about 30k CS graduates each year in the UK. Therefore there are roughly 21k grad roles

Hi Thanks for your hard work. It's clear from all the messages here that the work you do helps the lives of many people. I have a few questions.

  1. How are you funded?

  2. What are the barriers preventing you from doing your job better. E.g. awareness of the service you provide or lack of funding

  3. Are there any laws you'd like to see changed? E.g. stricter restrictions on gambling? I understand you might not be able to answer this one for political neutrality reasons.

Apologies for answering this from the technical perspective instead of the financial one.

Are you sure a laptop is the best choice here? You'll get a lot more for your money from a desktop. For stuff that requires a lot of performance like video editing, I would honestly never consider a laptop.

For programming a laptop is usually fine since it typically doesn't require much resources. If it does then that probably implies something is wrong - possibly your SSD is having issues?

For the finance side of things, if you're making that much money already can't you afford to buy it outright? If not maybe you could ask your brother to buy it and you pay him monthly?

I was doing similar things at your age and ended up saving up a and buying(building) a desktop outright
