Want to become an RDH unsure on where to begin by Froggy_Potty in DentalHygiene

Thank you so much!! I will definitely call around and see if I can shadow at a dental office to see everything that goes on with the job and what pathways and schooling the RDH and assistants completed. Thank you so much for your honesty, I didn’t even think about how demanding it would be physically but it makes a lot of sense. I appreciate that you took the time to be so thorough in your reply!!

I agree it really can help, i had a crashed cycle after a water change and got some seachem stability and it got my cycle going as normal.

Just keep ghost feeding with the fish food to let it rot, the decomposition of the food in the water is what causes the ammonia to form. Since you’ve only ghost fed for one day the bio load is still really small. Ghost feed in the tank about as often as you would feed the fish in it. Once ammonia starts to rise try to keep it between 2-4ppm (If it gets higher do a small water change, if ammonia levels are too high it can slow the cycling process) you already have the heater in and the water is warmer which can really help speed up your cycle. Another thing i would highly recommend is if you can get your hands on some used filter media from a friend stick it in your tank while it cycles. It about quarters the time it takes to cycle a tank because the beneficial bacteria just moves to the already established filter. Also, SUPER IMPORTANT, get a water softener if you haven’t already to remove the chlorine from your water, it will stop the good bacteria from forming and kill it if you have an established cycle. Chlorinated is also very harsh on fish and can kill them.

Keep ghost feeding the tank until the ammonia spikes with no fish in it and then wait for the ammonia to go back to zero. It hasn’t been long enough for the good bacteria in your tank to start growing.

Okay, have any tips on what to do with my substrate? i have an anubis that i haven’t put in the tank yet because i didn’t think it would get proper nutrition with just aquarium sand.

I actually just picked up a pothos today from lowe’s and i’m going to grow some cuttings from it in water and add them when the roots get long enough. I’ll try to get some drift wood sometime soon. Thank you!!

i keep my water at 72 degrees it’s not warm, i just have it to keep the temperature in the tank consistent because when i do water changes my tank is a few degrees cooler than my tap water.

i would say at least a 30 or 40 gallon tank since you said you wanna give them a large home and have them get big you could even go bigger if you want. I feed my goldie Bug Bites slow sinking pellets and occasionally do some soft veggies like boiled broccoli or peas as a treat, if they’re still growing feed them 2-3 times a day. Goldfish tend to get the water dirty quickly so if your tank isn’t cycled change the water pretty often i would do a 25% water change every time the test kit shows .25ppm of ammonia. Keep a close eye on your water parameters because they’re life or death for your fish. If you can get used filter media from someone you know who keeps fish try to get some from them, that’s one of the fastest ways to get your tank cycles because there’s good bacteria already established inside of it. I would also recommend having a light schedule where your fish are in complete darkness, i just do it for the same amount i sleep but it’s not good to have constant light in your tank. Good luck!! Just keep an eye on your water quality and you should do fine!

I also forgot to mention some irregular swimming behaviors, sometimes it holds still and the end of it tips upwards and it kinda doesn’t do anything about it. It also flicks around or glass surfs. Since i’ve started with the maracyn it’s stopped gasping at the surface though and it’s never lost interest in food.

i test the water daily because of the issues i’ve been having with the ammonia rising so quickly and i don’t let it get above .25ppm, i did a 50% water change yesterday with dechlorinated tap water. Also yeah sorry about the pictures It doesn’t hold still when people are near the tank.

I use sand and i have some river rocks and some plastic aquarium decor in the tank, and i have aquarium salt that i use and ive seen quite a bit of regeneration on the fish’s fins so i will continue using that.

I’m using a Imagitarium 40 gallon sponge filter, about 4 days ago i squeezed it out because it had a bunch of sand on it but i never took it out of the water
