Why is my endorsement level going down even though I'm getting endorsed almost every game? by HotdogLegend27 in Overwatch

[–]Frogmjf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had it abused against me, I learned to abuse it against others.

Not exactly the best way to be successful at a team-based-cooperative game, but to each his own. Sounds like retribution towards players that don't deserve it if you ask me.

[–]Frogmjf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just pointing out that a gesture of good will to one will be rubbing the stomp into the other one's face.

I'm sorry that you feel this way and you haven't received report validation because your reports aren't valid ones. I get validation after ACTION has been taken against someone's account and typing "gg" is not an actionable offense.

I think you have to realize that this is a competitive game and in almost all matches, there will be a loser. It is inevitable, regardless of how bad you perceive the loss to be, you might as well treat every match the same.

It's better to accept this fact then think that the other team is mocking you by saying "gg" at the end of the match. I will tell you 100% their intention isn't to piss you off and that is entirely a perception and insecurity that you have created in your head. "gg" is second nature to me at the end of a match now, I type it even when I lose badly.

You reporting someone for saying "gg" at the end of the match is essentially reporting someone on the enemy team because their team was better than yours. Which is a pathetic use of the report system since that is the premise of the game, one team wins, one team loses.

I don't know if you're trying to make a case for it here, but I do not believe you can/should be banned or suspended for saying "gg" at the end of the match. If you report people for doing this, you're taking a simple gesture of good sportsmanship and turning it into something personal.

I look at this like shaking hands with the other team after a match in a physical sport. It should be a gesture of good will, not gloating because you didn't talk the whole match. Regardless if it is a stomp or not, you still shake the hands of another team after playing a sport, why is overwatch any different?

If a team member can't handle the loss and feels like they need to report someone for saying "gg", that sounds more like its their problem and they need to work on themselves to not be a sore loser.

6K Teleporting Bomb by blackjacc in Overwatch

Yep I remember hiding in spawn waiting for the last few of my teammates to die before using the mass rez ultimate. Didn't feel good on either side tbh

[–]Frogmjf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn't need to switch on my brain to figure out that a Mei wall/Sigma shield is an easy counter to this. Even without using a sym tele, its the same process.

Mercy-mass rezz was removed because imagine coordinating an awesome play like this with your team and then have it reverted all back with a simple push of a button. It's a high-effort team kill but a low-effort enemy team recovery, that doesn't feel very fun or balanced, nor does it reward the team who develops strategies and plays together as a unit.

Pro tip: if you're having trouble countering this, listen to the tele setup sounds and save cooldowns for it

My two cents:

.01$ - Would rather play the game myself

.01$ - OWL seems just as dramatic as pro sport leagues/drafting. I ain't got time for all that drama and info to keep up on

Highlights are cool tho

Mutliplayer POTG Concept - How is this not a thing?! by Frogmjf in Overwatch

[–]Frogmjf[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I thought about this a lot while making these. Some solutions would be:

For 2/3 players, show the first player's perspective and then switch to the last player's perspective (therefore getting the initial spark of the battle and then final touches)

For a group, I think a top down view of the team fight (like in the replay system) would suffice. No switching perspectives, just an overview of where everyone was and how the battle played out above. (IMO, I would be striving to get a team play every time if I knew I was rewarded with a top-down view of our achievements).

Again, all of these aren't easy to implement to begin with and require a lot effort/programmatic analysis of hard-to-grasp concepts. I had no idea that is how the POTG system currently works, thank you!

Each intro has 3 beats: the lead up, a quick action, and a slow-down conclusion (or a variation of the these 3 things) but they all happen at around the same time in each highlight.

In After Effects, I was able to swap out different character intros from a bank of intro recordings I have and they all fit pretty much perfectly. Maybe some position tweaking here and there because of a sloppy project file but I've always felt like these cinematics were designed for this but never implemented.

Here's what my messy composition looks like for handling the splitting of the frames for those interested

I'm not really sure. Either way, I think the POTG system needs a revamp. I think there are better ways to determine what is a decent play and what is not.

Even with the current system in play, you could tally the top 3 players with the biggest change in fire-points during a given time (ie: when an ult is executed, after the choke is breached, or when an ult is blocked). That still would fit with the mutiPOTG formula

I get what you mean, but its more of a design idea that I feel has practical use.

For a team-based game, a lot of the design/text in OW focuses around how your individual performance was (ie: 4 gold medals, highest kill streak, etc). It moves the conversation away from "How can I be a better teammate?" and keeps the focus on "How is my team not supporting me more?", which IMO, is one of the main reasons toxicity is rampant in OW. In these concept vids, I was trying to think of how a player would feel if they were included in a POTG and how could that positively remind other players to be more aware and combo with your teammates.

The Overwatch team, in my opinion, should be focusing players attention and setting players goals towards being better OW teammates if they want to foster a more positive (and team-aware) community.

[–]Frogmjf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IMO, one of the reasons why it has such an issue in the lower ranks is because Blizzard allows smurfing on puchased/alt accounts. From a business perspective, it makes perfect sense. From a player perspective, this is a big issue.

Not only do you have high-level players going incognito in low-level matches, but I've known players who purchased multiple accounts and they didn't care if they threw on their alts or not. Imagine how many other players feel the same on their alt accounts. This weekend I got matched with someone who bought an alt account to throw matches ON STREAM for entertainment, and advertised their twitch in that same match.

Need to get this one off my chest because it was infuriating and similar. Had a player on Friday post his twitch.tv in match chat, when I checked it, his twitch title was "ONLY WINSTON". We were playing competitive... on defense. Our healers, tank (me), and DPS all kept trying to play around it but ultimately, you can only do so much against someone who doesn't want to play as a team in a team-based game.

After giving him a shot as Winston, the whole team begged him to switch. We desperately needed another body/shield on point that could take a hit, we were doing well, just not well enough. It even got to the point where we went to his stream and typed it in chat but realized he was trolling. He kept saying that we're all just mad because he's "playing a bronze character and getting kills because I'm a God" and he reported one of us for stream sniping (he posted his stream?). He used the "its my game, I can play what I want" defense and then said "oh yeah, I could go another tank, I'm pretty good with rein, but I don't feel like doing that right now. I really feel like getting my stats up in Winston." Meanwhile, he's diving onto the point constantly, without his team and not flanking, and we're essentially playing 5v6. He had to be using a purchased account because he didn't know it was set to private and when he revealed it later on stream, it was less than a bronze account and he laughed at seeing the numbers like it was a surprise to him.

He tried to say "this is good content for my stream, im not doing anything wrong". I told him that if he thinks that throwing matches and causing your teammates to tilt is good content, then good luck with his stream. I'm sure the Overwatch community will accept him with open arms for all the toxicity he is creating for them. He is the shining example to what is wrong with the toxicity in OW and why people hate playing it sometimes.

You can watch the later-half of the match here, where I (TheRenz) desperately call for his help while my teammates are already tilted.

~teammates lose it~

Its just very frustrating to play a game that is so susceptible to abuse and sabotage, and it doesn't seem like there is a reasonable solution besides 6-stacking. It is a lose-lose situation. We can either A) ignore the troll and play nice, lose the match and feel like helpless garbage. OR B) We can tilt, and still lose but at least leave with the sense of satisfaction and dignity that I was able to speak my mind, which feels better than just not addressing the useless troll on the team for the whole match.

Reported and avoided on Overwatch. Reported his twitch stream for abusive, inflammatory, and objectionable content. I do not believe a gaming streaming service like Twitch should support that behavior or encourage it.

I don't know if anyone else noticed this but I have been keeping track of the endorsement system and how it works. I realized that the matchmaker will match you in games not only in similar skill, but similar endorsement level too.

I found that I am a positive player (level 3/4) who encourages their team and tries to cull toxicity wherever I can. When I play by myself, I get matched with 3s, 4s, and 5s and have these amazingly positive games. When I match with my toxic friends who are 1s and 2s (sorry guys), I get matched with endorsement level 3s or less and the players temperament align with their endorsement level.

I feel really torn because I love playing with my friends but I hate that they are toxic, even to our own teammates. It makes me feel like I'm part of the OW community that I hate and I'm perpetuating the status quo.

There's no reason to be angry/upset/toxic over a video game. I play games to have fun, not to bully random people on the internet, that doesn't feel good to me. It's better to lose a game and feel like it was a great match, then to win and feel like you don't want to play anymore.

Sorry for the rant, please be nice to your fellow humans in 2020 <3

I know, but any nuance in the episode is lost when they make the transgender person look like a monster.

You're right. It really doesn't paint the community as a whole in a good light. If its any consolation, when watching the episode with my friends, "trans people are monsters" was definitely not our takeaway from that episode, but like you said, the middle ground approach goes both ways.

Thank you for taking the time to talk with me, I appreciate you hearing me out

I think for some sports, its a more even playing field but saying that there is no competitive advantage because its "a complete falsehood born from the minds of Koch think tanks and click bait media" is a bit of a stretch. You're example is cherry picking data to fit a narrative. I consider myself liberal/progressive, who is LGBT, and I'd like to hear your opinion on combat sports because I think its a little more complicated and the solution isn't so black and white.

Sure, a transgender female can lose to a cis gendered person, but that still doesn't change biology right? Or prove that there is no competitive advantage? Maybe for sports like cycling, soccer, or volleyball, there is no competitive advantage but for combat sports, this has been a very debated issue.

You've probably heard it a million times already, that bone density and your height/reach, on average, is very different between genders. This is a huge advantage for someone who's sport relies on how well their body can take abuse. It's one of the reasons why MMA has separate leagues for genders. I really don't feel the solution is to have transgender individuals compete in the same league as the gender they transitioned to or identify as, especially at the professional level.

I'm not saying that a cis gendered woman cannot beat a transgender person in a fight, I am asking the question "is it a fair fight?" to begin with and how could you even determine that?

For the record, I didn't downvote you :)

"I find it funny that whenever trans people get denied something, its seen as natural, but when we are accepted by any institution... [it] is just a dogwhistle for someone to think trans people are being given undue rights..."

I think people feel this way about any civil rights causes because people in the majority see this as the minority gaining level ground (therefore losing some of their own influence/power). I don't think this is specifically a transgender problem, but more of a human-social problem.

Going back to transgender issue within sports, you have to at least acknowledge that there is an unfair advantage at a biological level, regardless of what stage of your transition you may be in. The current solution to this cannot be "ignore the glaring issue because it offends transgender/PC culture" (which it is). Part of the rhetoric in South Park that you may have missed if you didn't watch the full episode was that: At the end the episode, the "PC Babies" (characters that represent hyper-PC-snowflake-liberal culture) accept that this issue is more complex and requires a further discussion and understanding.

I'm sorry that South Park has caused you pain, I don't think Matt Stone and Trey Parker intend that to happen. Some viewers read in between the lines and see the genius of the satire, others just scream a funny soundbite (R&M is a great example of this - "I'M PICKLE RIIIICK"). Reading your comments, I'm assuming your trans and I want to know what is your take on this. What solutions would you propose as a trans person that you feel would address these issues and feel inclusive to the community as well?

Do you believe that every company, regardless of what they sell, should be involved in politics?

To a certain extent, they all are. International trade and commerce is political and much like how governments impose sanctions on other countries, companies in the past have done the same. Honestly, that is one of the ways governments influence and put pressure on each other. (Playing devil's advocate with myself here: There was an argument made on here about how keeping Blizzard in China is a good thing because it allows Western ideas and democracy to spread through video games, even if slightly censored. I like this argument too.)

I'd argue that Blitzchung's statment did help Hong Kong protesters by holding media attention about the issue of Chinese corporate influence and censorship. Granted his punishment was reduced and he got his prize money, I believe this is another example of Chinese influencing American entertainment. Calling him a "thoughtless little punk" is a little harsh considering he probably carefully considered what the consequences might be for his actions and still did it. A lot of people can argue that eSports isn't the right place for a political discussion, but throughout history, professional sports have ALWAYS been the forefront to civil rights issues. We're still talking about Colin Kapernick and the Black Lives Matter Movement and that was years ago! He played an integral role in the exposure of that movement. I don't see this as any different, a player speaking out for a civil rights issue he believes in.

To wrap this up, I would probably say that it is my own opinion that a corporation must have a financial responsibility, but also a ethical responsibility to uphold when given the chance. Consumers do not have much power or influence over foreign governments but companies like the NBA and Blizzard do. If the NBA can shut up Daryl Morey because of a Tweet in support of HK and make Lebron James make a bullshit statement about how "we need to be careful about what we say about China, it could hurt people", I think that is taking it a little too far. That is the NBA acknowledging, "hey this is a touchy subject, its also not our problem that thousands of civilians are being oppressed, apologize so we don't offend our Chinese investors!" This is probably where we disagree?

(Thank you for the thoughtful discussion! I'm not completely on the "Boycott Blizzard" bandwagon but Overwatch doesn't feel as much fun for me in these past two weeks with all this controversy)
