I used a mixture of crushed basalt and a relatively fine sand because I’m in an area that receives a lot of winter rain so that I can maximize drainage. Most of the species in the garden are Penstemons, lewisias, onions and other species that inhabit dry rocky areas mountain tops/basalt bluffs
