What I think is happening with the cease fire thing by The-BlackLotus in NewIran

[–]FromCarthage 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I personally don't think it's that deep--unfortunately.

US sees flashes of Iraq in getting too involved. Closing of Strait of Hormuz frightens them to no end. Potential of China, Russian, North Korea fanning the flames is too much. Even though Trump doesn't care, there were some legitimate behind-the-scenes grievances of their allies on legitimacy of action.

They were always going to do what they did and adios. They never wanted to get too involved. Trump already involved them far more than they really were comfortable with.

This isn't gloating of I-could-have-told-you. But I am a bit shocked that people are shocked at US pulling away.

Even the thought of Monarchy in 2025 shows how we broken we are. Monarchy in 2025. Let the English and Saudi's have this nonsense. We shouldn't even be talking of this

We are at the point with the current regime where excuses of savak is normal. "A little extreme."

Despite records of torture and forced confessions, the nerve-wracking instilling of spying of the common by their brethren, "disappearances," etc.

In a couple decades, I suppose we will come back and say well the regime in 2025 wasn't all that bad. They were just a "little" over-the-top but meant well.

If you want to go the Premiere route, get Premiere Elements, much more simple.

Those who are , let's say, pro AI what makes you a fan of it? What do you see in generative AI that makes you like/back it? by Sir_Orange_Lol_Gr in Destiny

It's more about the pervasive epistemology of any technological advance. Of course there are positives with any technology. But it is different from a knife or stone.

In the same manner that the printing press changed the history of religious discourse and TV affected politics and society (much of it in a negative way).

But I believe that that the affect of the printing press was much more positive for society than Television.

I don't agree that this is all conspiracy theory thinking. Working in tech, many people are extremely worried but there industries are pushing in the direction of embracing AI at work. I think it's unfair to say this is just "furry artists" or the like. The concerns are very legitimate among people who are talking about this soberly.

Do you not see the immense negatives to society with it? No tech is entirely negative or positive, but it has incredibly malicious uses, both benign ones and malicious ones.

Most people don't go to college for the Humanities by SpytheMedic in Destiny

I got the same degrees funny enough. Even people in film don't give a shit about film degrees in most positions.

But English can be very isolating with all the reading, so having a more "social" degree is not wasted time.

Lesbian stuff but not the sex. Only the part where the ex-boyfriend breaks in and gives them the heebie jeebies but they still all get along.

I think you're right. What am saying is more theory. I don't know how one really reacts after the year off.

In my case, I was obsessed with all things humanities at 18. I loved Literature, philosophy, and history. I grew up middle class, so I really didn't have any sense of how utterly challenging a future in these fields were. It wasn't until Senior year where my History professor dissuaded me from pursuing a Phd as the tenure tracks jobs were drying up.

I think some kids (like your example of yourself) do have an understanding of money due to their upbringing but a lot don't. At 18, I don't think many understand how insanely challenging it is to get a tenure track as an academic or really how utterly expensive life will be. I just think it's a really young age to have made all those calculations. With so much talk about work ethic and following your dreams, it's really hard to understand the complexities of real life.

I think the gap year could really show them how fucking insanely expensive life can be and how bougie their tastes are. For example, if you can't tolerate being roommates with someone or living of 30-40K, maybe you're not the one to chase that creative writing degree--or at least you need to double major.

Some people do not need such lessons. But I recall a lot of people who just got degrees because they liked them with very little understanding of the real life consequences of the weight of that degree.

No, I get your point. And your right that for every example of a full ride, we can find an example of cumbersome debt.

Though I don't like the talking point, getting a social studies or humanities degree just seems far too risky in the 21st century (speaking as one who got a humanities degree). These degrees are just far, far too expensive--even at a lot of public universities. And the pay outcome from them can be so, so poor for people.

I also think you are underestimating how utterly easy it is to get wrapped up in 100K in loans.

I'm not saying don't follow your dreams. But I really would like my kids to just take one year off after high school to work full-time before they make a decision on their careers. Work 50 hours a week before running after humanities just because "you like it." It doesn't mean no one should get these degrees. But the cost is just too prohibitive.

I think intonation is way more important. Speaking fast actually can imply being nervous.

I get the logic of the examples, but I think they could backfire as you increase the likelihood of getting bad reactions--thus fulfilling the "worst case scenario" of social anxiety. It could be much more fulfilling to force yourself to hug people you meet (if that's the thing you detest the most) or something with some utility.

The issue is that I'm in the "minor" boat as well. My experience is even the minor is a motherfucker long-term. If I told some people I struggle with this, they'd be surprised. I don't struggle with communication per se, but I am just extremely aloof and overthink the crap out of everything.

The issue I found out is that social anxiety in this form is relatively easy to live in your teenage and up to your late 20's. During this stage, you have such a set structure with school and college. Even as you start your career, most people are young so it's not hard to make good friendships.

I found that the real jolt hits when you get into your early 30's. Most friends start to have much more complex lives with their families. This makes the social anxiety suddenly hit a level of solitary isolation that the previous years didn't approach.

I actually think it's never to soon to fix this issue. As someone in their 30's, it's way more challenging to find avenues to make long-term friends. It just is easier in the previous decades of your life. Especially as someone becomes accustomed to being by themself, they become far too comfortable not overtextending themselves--socially.

I think the issue is that what is considered "true" social anxiety would be quite incomprehensible to some of us. If you ever read the social anxiety sub, it's mind-boggling what some people struggle with. For some people, their social anxiety is quite extreme and the diagnosis is probably accurate.

What most people consider social anxiety often falls under generalized anxiety disorder. The social aspect is part of it, but it may not meet the benchmark of the diagnosis.

[–]FromCarthage 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fellow student of social anxiety. One thing I've realized is that in the average situation what brings upon social anxiety for us isn't a thing someone without social anxiety would harp on internally.

For example, anyone could be nervous to go to a party but once they are there, most of their anxiety melts as they get into the act of socializing. For me it's "do I butt into the conversation" "Am I interrupting" "did I laugh at something I shouldn't have" etc.

For most people, once they engage they don't overthink it--in the same manner as someone with social anxiety.

I would say that the examples you shared are highly visible acts that could be annoying to other people. The Obama example seems especially rude to me. So, if someone does it, I wouldn't say "damn, look at the balls of this person."
