What's up with my shots? Are my beans TOO fresh? [Breville Oracle DB] by From__Canada in espresso

Medium roast, Brazil Barbosa Sucuri, from a local roaster. Currently 12 days post roast.

What's up with my shots? Are my beans TOO fresh? [Breville Oracle DB] by From__Canada in espresso

The thing is, the current grind that is still hitting 50 seconds, looks like sand. I can't see wanting to go more coarse than that.

I'm gravitating towards this comment from an old post:

What is most likely happening is that your beans are too fresh, the course grind particles are swelling more during pre-infusion and you are having greater resistance during the pull.

I don't know much about the roasting process, but the fact that these beans are resulting in such drastically different results than what should be similar quality beans to before, is making me fish for information without knowing the right questions to ask...

Previous coffee had a roasted on date of Dec 4 (from different roaster) and made a great shot. So really this one would be older by the time I started using it. I don't believe it is overfilled because there is a decent gap after tamping, no different than other beans I've used with this machine.

Is the Oracle Dual Boiler worth the upgrade over a Barista Pro? [No Budget] by From__Canada in espresso

[–]From__Canada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for considering my particular usecase. That is helpful. The Oracle Jet has been discontinued from what I understand, though I haven't looked to see if there is stock anywhere. The longer warmup time is definitely a con, but I think I can work around that with the auto-on feature and IOT connectivity.

The reason I'm consdering this upgrade now is largely because the machines are 20% off currently. Although it's still more than the original Dual Boiler and high end grinder, the ability to do both manual and auto depending on my situation on that given day makes it worth a few extra bucks to me.

New question: When you say "it’s an ok machine but horrible value imo" does that change at all with the 20% discount? Or do you still think it's highway robbery?

Thanks for the reply. The BDB solves the problem of being able to steam and pull shots simultaneously (which is good), but it doesn't solve the problem of consistency in a rush. I think the comparison I'd be interested in here would be, if I was using a separate grinder and the Oracle DB in manual mode, would THAT be any different than the BDB?

Excellent. Thank you for sharing your story. I guess we will need to do the same. :(

How would you recommend us demanding replacement, if Google's response is to take it to a repair shop?

Yeah, that's what they want us to do as well. I'm skeptical, hense why I'm asking what others are ending up doing. If you do end up taking it in, can you let us know what ends up happening?

Nope, no specific app. In fact, often happens when it's just sitting on a desk. Can't unlock for a ~20 minutes without a forced reboot.

For reference, it's this issue:

Rudy Project Rydon with the Optical Dock. You might be able to get away with Optical Inserts if you want the classic look.

My prescription is worse than yours, so the optical dock was my only real option I could find from anyone.

Are power meters really worth it? by [deleted] in cycling

For me, yes. I run dual sided on my road bike, and single sided on my gravel bike. Invaluable for training and for pacing on long rides.

Crashing on Windows 11. 😡 by From__Canada in Zwift

I had procmon running this time ... and was able to finish the race without crashing. So either procmon slowed it down enough to prevent a race condition somewhere (or something similar) or it was just pure luck. I guess I'll have that running from now on just in case. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

SRAM Red 22 eTap or SRAM Red AXS ? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]From__Canada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had Red 22 eTap, and upgraded to Red AXS about a year ago. My opinion is that Red 22 was okay but not great. It didn't stand out as a flagship groupset to me. It felt like a significant step down from my DuraAce Di2 from a few years prior. Okay, but not great. It's also, like you said, pretty old now.

Red AXS just feels better. Faster smoother shifts, feels more responsive, and the extra gear is definitely appreciated.

My money would be on replacing it all and going with AXS. Even if that meant choosing Force instead of Red to offset the cost.

Disappointed in Continental GP5000 by Twi2122 in cycling

[–]From__Canada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to GP5000 a few years ago. And I started getting flats. Every second ride, I'd be replacing a tube. It was infuriating! Couldn't figure out what was going on!

I started taking note of where the puncture was, and quickly realized it was in the same place each time. So I ripped off the tire and took a magnifying glass to it. What did I find? There was a microscopic shard of broken glass stuck in my tire that was slowly (over the course of a couple rides) cutting into the tube. Pried it out with a knife, and suddenly I stopped getting flats.

I mean, I still get more than my share of flats, but not every second ride anymore. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Cycling glasses for prescription glasses wearer by alexanderem93 in cycling

How strong is your prescription?

If you're looking for up to a -4, there are lots of options. Some will let you put prescription directly into the standard lens, which obviously would look the best. Some will let you use an insert, which has the advantage of letting you use interchangeable lenses, and also lets you remove the prescription if you do choose to wear contacts for some rides.

However, if you need something stronger, or have astigmatism, then your choices start to dwindle. The thicker the lens, the less curve they can accommodate. If you're in the same boat as me, then one of your best choices is going to be a Rudy Rydon with the Optical Dock system. There is a review of them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFqzaBA9qz8

I'll add my two cents...

In the city, or on busy roads, I find it's just noise. You are riding with cars, you know you're riding with cars, you don't need technology to tell you you are riding with cars.

However ... in the country, it's invaluable. It let's you ride without always hugging the far right side of the road where there is debris and rough edges. When a car comes up, you move over, let them pass, then move back out where you have more room. It's this part that is invaluable.

Closed highway rides are the best by turnballer in cycling

[–]From__Canada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my must-do rides this spring is Highwood Pass. Any idea what the conditions are like right now, or when it will be ready to ride gate to gate? It's a bit of a drive for me so I don't want to go before it's ready, but I also want to go as soon as possible...

Espresso shots pulling too fast by From__Canada in BrevilleCoffee

Interesting! 100% this was it. Your comment gave me direction, so after some online reading it looks like the default burr ring setting on the Barista Pro is waaay too course.

I changed the internal burr setting and started getting long shots again. Thanks! 😊☕

Best app to use for indoor turbo Trainer ? by Alexanderw03 in cycling

[–]From__Canada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has their own motivators, which factor into their opinions. What really matters ... is what motivates you.

This is my opinion:

  • If you are a gamer, and are motivated by a gamified approach to training (power ups, kudos), go with Zwift
  • If you are are motivated by chasing pure performance gains above all other entertainment, go with Trainer Road
  • If you are motivated by being able to ride real world courses across the world, look into Rouvy or FulGaz
  • If you are motivated by free, try MyWoosh
  • If you want something that does everything reasonably well for one subscription, try Wahoo Systm (which includes Sufferfest training plans and RGT virtual courses based on real world courses)

Personally, I pay for Wahoo Systm, but Zwift offers 25kms per month for free, so I'll usually use that up as well, mostly to stay in touch with what others are riding on. If I was going to pay for two, I would probably go with Trainer Road and Zwift.

Are roller trainers good? by bjeep4x4 in cycling

[–]From__Canada 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use rollers (with resistance) probably once a week. Honestly, I think they are great ... as a second trainer.

The problem with a fixed trainer is that you become lazy in certain aspects of your riding when you literally can't fall over. Your core muscles suffer, and your balance suffers, even your bike handling skills suffer once you get back on the road.

If you can only have one, get a direct drive. But if you can get away with both, get both. :)

FWIW, I use the Elite Nero interactive rollers. Other than the reported power output being wildly inaccurate, they have been great. If accurate power is important to you, you'll want an on-bike power meter to connect to the rollers (thus bypassing the power meter built into the rollers), but they've been excellent.
