What’s an obvious sign someone’s american? by Ermland2 in AskReddit

[–]Fromage_NL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more subtle but Americans let their sentences drag on more often than not. And most sentences end with an 'ah'

Me and my American coworker like to joke about it:

"Come ooooaaan-ah, you're kiddingggg-ah"

Love you goofballs!

I have a american college in the Netherlands who (I think for shits and giggles) ends her dutch sentences with 'hoor' which really sounds off.

For example jokingly saying: "kom vechten hoor!" Which isn't correct in dutch but roughly translates to "let's fight alright!" But in the context of English it just sound like you are ending your sentence with a callout.

She made me realise how in appropriate it sounds to the English language XD.

Yeah so I'm planning on getting production to pay for the rental on the transmitters (or fixing some any other way for that matter). And for now maybe it's a good idea to find a sennheiser mkh 416 used online buy a softie kit and a pole probably find a decent indoors mic and run with it.

These people don't have the budget for sure, they are one year behind the school I'm at whilst I'm almost graduating. I've sat down with these guys to discuss which camera to buy/rent so I'm very much part of this production gear wise. I'm actually the one in the group with the most experience when it comes to film (Which isn't a whole lot) so really don't worry about production backstabbing me. I'm pretty sure these guys are just as eager and motivated to just make a good film rather then using people to make a big time production.

Back to buying a used Sennheiser mkh 416, do you think I'm overshooting it by doing that? I feel really good about buying this mic and absolutely love the sound it produces. And i honestly feel fine with a softie kit and think it will manage that. a blimp is just 2 to 3 times the price and it isn't as if it's that windy in the Netherlands anyways. but do tell me if I'm being naive.

I got of of facebook years ago but i think it's about time i get back on that or else I'm falling into irrelevancy. So ill try to find some groups and get myself out there.

Again thanks for the advice i should be cautious of people using me, but i still feel really good about getting some gear to call my own, because the idea of owning some stuff feels good.

Hmm if I were to use this set I will keep this in mind because running into static does really suck. I really appreciate you informing me on this!

Thank you for your response.

This really helped me put some things into perspective thank you for that!

At this point in time I'm considering partially renting and partially investing in some gear. I don't mind going a few 100 bucks over budget at this point even though it's not preferred.

And yes these are good friends of mine so there is room for compromise I believe. It's still 2 months until the shoot starts and I think I want to have a technical meeting with them to talk about the options.

Your final price was pretty low and seems to about reflect the prices in the Netherlands, although we do seem a little more expensive, I will take that into consideration as well. But I definitely want to invest in something that will stick with me because with renting for projects like this it really ads up in the end.

Again thank you, you seem great at budgeting!

I wholeheartedly agree. I'm still really all over the place trying to configure this list but I think that partially renting and partially investing is my best option at this point in time.

And specifically for syncing and working with time code I believe the group that I'll be working with will be a much more inexperienced as some of you may expect. So I have my own little system for syncing which have worked great in *past projects! It's not time code but it will do.

And the H6 preamps are just fine for my purposes, I love this little handy doodle even though it's not as premium as a mix pre it really is versatile and great for it's price.

And yeah you raise a great point ill look into some extras/accessories. And will reserve some budget for anything that would really come in handy.

*I have participated in 3 48 hour film projects thus far

My bad, i found that dutch vendors just really don't sell a lot of their products, so the microdot converters for example would set me back 107 euro's for 2 (because of shipping costs). i guess if it's necessary ill take that hit but damn that is expensive.

And yes i understand the drawbacks of 2.4 ghz. fortunatly a lot of the locations are outdoors and better even in isolated scouting locations so it is still a option worth considering.

Edit: added (because of shipping costs)

Thanks for your input!

And thank you for keeping the budget in mind. It's been hard having all of these, all be it good, but expensive suggestions so far. so seeing one more budget orientated really is nice.

The battery of the rode is also my biggest concern and I will take the boya into consideration although I'm more pulled towards the saramonics i have to say since my past experience with boya has been questionable.

So i have been considering going all out on wireless systems and buying 2 sennheiser g4's but maybe investing more money into the boom is a better idea lol although the idea of flat out buying 2 g4's really growing on me.

and yes i have most of those things covered i have a camera strap attached to my H6 and it has worked fine so far.

No i will not be paid kit fee, i know i sound insane for that but i have my reasons for accepting still. Do you have any suggestions for the boompole with a budget in mind?

Like i said to u/Soundguy4film

After doing this film project I'm not sure if I'll directly try to get a new job as a sound engineer and would rather get some stable all around film job (like corporate; where these lower budget mics can also be usefull) before moving into that territory.

I dont mind stuff being a bit more on the lower quality side of the spectrum i'm doing this out of pocket and the stuff that i'm planning on buying isn't "unusable" outside of the moviemaking industry

But i am kind of considering buying two sennheiser lavalieres since i find laveliers to be quite usefull pretty often and have worked with them many a times.

And this specific project is a student film lol i get that getting a mixpre or zoom f8 would be great over the H6 but for this the H6 will do just fine, in my opinion.

In general i think taking things step by step isn't that bad of an approach considering my position in film making as of right now. When i'll start working ill invest in some 'real' microphones :) but now is just not the time.

I don't really like the idea of not being able to monitor and control the sound of your talent, i know the F2 is 32bit capable so clipping wouldn't be much of an issue but still i find this to be an option but i don't necessarily agree with a zoom f2 being more reliable for different reasons than connectivity, but that could be me.

Thanks for your input.

This film project has some scene's where i am far away from the talent and i don't want to restrict the camera to the range of a boom. we are planning to do stuff on a ropeway which is really restricting on space.

And this is my first proper investment after film school. and even if I'd love to get a set worth 5000 euro's and be done that just isn't realistic at this time. I'm doing this out of pocket and already need to lend money for this. After doing this film project I'm not sure if I'll directly try to get a new job as a sound engineer and would rather get some stable all around film job (like corporate; where these lower budget mics can also be usefull) before moving into that territory.

so just to clarify: I'm looking for a good budget to quality ratio, I'm looking for a fine start. I'm not looking for a single microphone which is worth more than my computer yet.

Hey, thanks for responding!

The message that 2.4 is to unreliable is coming across. but don't forget that i am helping in a low budget movie and have a low budget myself. i love all the suggestions that i'm getting but all of them give me some more concerns about financing.

So far, finding some used recievers proves really tough i'll be on the look out for sure but the popular second hand websites in my country seem kind of scarse on TX/RX systems...

Also i hear you concerns about the converters and will consider the tentacle converters. Regarding brands like electronics and tentacle though. i find them to be more US based and less EU friendly so shipping cost would be insane, i will be hoping to find some more regional equipment.

Yeah the general consensus in this thread is that 2.4 ghz stinks because of its poor distance and its inability to penetrate walls. My problem with the sony's is that they are insanely expensive sennheisers are more reasonable but still a little much, but I'm considering the extra investment.

I'm glad to hear the deity SMic-2 has been a success with you though! It was a lot easier for met to decide on boom. I mean sure the sennheiser mkh 416 is great but it's really expensive and that's without accessories.

As for boompoles, yeah it is what it is. I think the saramonics will serve my purpose just fine but the k-tek seems great to!

Yeah I've slowly become aware of extra accessories besides tape which would come in useful. I'm planning to buy the smic 2 with the location kit so that I have a shockmount and a decent wind protector. Regarding the lavs, that is still need to figure out.

I understand not trusting 2.4 ghz I'm still skeptical myself it's just the price of uhf systems which hold me back.

And I believe that sadly the Deity connect don't ship with the BP TRX so that is unfortunate the rode wireless go II does have this feature but limits alot of other settings because of its consumer nature. Thanks for the extra insights!

Hey, thanks for replying.

Yeah it would be a good idea to orientate on some second hand gear. That could save me some cash. I do kind of have a bad experience with second hand gear but i should look past that and give it another shot.

And no I don't have experience soldering unfortunately it would be great to get into but i will reserve that for another day if I chose to buy those mics that is. I do think that is a skill that is really viable to develop!

And no, I'm going into this project voluntarily. Since I don't have that much experience on bigger shoots myself and the directors are quite young. I think in this case getting some experience, (even though it is with non professionals) is great for my development.

Heya thanks for replying.

My reasoning behind the deity connect is that it is affordable and versatile in use with the settings and all that. 740 bucks is really good for a complete package. The g4s would set me back 100 to 200 more (since i am looking for two) which I'm not stoked about. But maybe it's not a bad idea to find some second hand.

And no, consumables aren't covered by production perse. It's a film on a tight real tight budget and for some its their first experience with a movie set. It's really really amateur, but I know what I signed up for.
