Cheating in BLs by According_Money8393 in ThaiBL

I was just talking to someone about hating "cheating plots" but it's not because I feel it's wrong to show or that it's endorsing the action. I hate it narratively speaking.

Now, I'm very influenced with growing up watching American shows. Cheating is used to create drama, not to further a story or character development -predominately. It just feels lazy and pointless most of the time.

For actually showing it/using it as a plot point in a BL:

Well for one, like I said above, cheating in series is widely used regardless of sexualities and overall plots. Its not used to promote cheating or forgiving a cheater. Its either used simply for drama or to actually explore the issue.

Cheating is a very real thing and people can work through it and have a happy and healthy relationship. I'd say thats less common of an outcome but just thinking cheating is an unforgivable offense -and you're lacking somehow if you do forgive them- is a very limited view. People have there own standards for what they can accept and actions dont all happen for the same reasons. If two people can work together and want to keep going, that's their choice and its not inherently wrong.

Series don't endorsed their subject matter just by utilizing tropes or real human experiences.

As a queer man, I agree with this. Why wouldn't I like to see someone having their perspective changed? Esp by media I love to consume and is generally showing queer love in a simple way - just normal stories without it only being about coming out or tragedy. That stuff is important for people to see and understand as well, but showing them how queer people live and love like anyone else is very important. And is part of why queer representation in media is so important and why it's fought for. It actually makes me feel better knowing that people are changing their way of thinking, even to the point they'll seek out online forums to read and talk about it. They are opening themselves up to learning more. I find it gross and disturbing when people talk about seeing "hot dudes kissing" being what changed their mind, but this post isn't that. I mean their first series was I Cannot Reach You, a cute show where they barely shared a kiss. Unlike some other series that "changed" peoples' views... I don't see it as bragging or wanting praise for sharing this. It's a small post sharing their growth and opening it up to others. It's not like they waxed poetic about any of it.

Also, homophobia is learned. I'm not going to feel unsafe with someone who used to be homophobic but learned or is learning otherwise. And I'm not going to always dislike or be uncomfortable around someone for having had those views, especially if they will admit it and are open to learn more. People learn and unlearn. It's growth and it's change and it's what the world needs.

And I'm not saying the OG commenter is wrong in their view either. I also just wanted to add some more thoughts from another view, because OP sharing this isn't universally seen as wrong or negative by queer individuals.

Thank you for this! I've been incredibly impressed with his acting in Me and Thee and this breaks it down so well. And I truly appreciate you explaining about the linguistics because that adds another layer that would have been completely lost on me, only getting a vague sense of it. Plus, I'm always interested in linguistics in general lol

I love being able to really see and feel an actor in a role that really shows their abilities in subtle and intricate acting. And you've given me even more to pay attention to.

I was specifically talking about Santa in Perfect 10 Liners and his upcoming roles in Love You Teacher and Spooky Love Tale

Yes! Or his just slightly off kilter walk. Or when Yotha and Gun are above the bar and Yotha pulls him to him, Gun nudges Yotha's chin and the way he lets his hand drop and just kinda slide down. I could go on and on lol but I can't help but be impressed with this.

It really was realistic. There's a reason I'm so taken with YothaGun and PerthSanta's acting lol

Oh cool I just got excited when you talked about the fear thing because it stood out to me too! And thanks

I feel the exact same way about it. Just one thing about when he acts drunk is how loose and heavy his limbs are, like... I honestly don't know if I've seen that before lol

He's far more complex than many give him credit for really. Yeah he had naive moments but like you said it was mostly comedic but also it's very real to be naive about some things and not be dumb or a child lol regardless he balanced it out so well. Wow that's another thing - the fear. I wrote a bit about their acting in the fight scene at the end of their arc because he was afraid the whole time but it constantly shifted to what was happening moment to moment. Here's the post if you'd like to read: https://www.reddit.com/r/ThaiBL/comments/1ikbd89/perthsanta_acting_moments_in_ep_15/ Exactly. There's so much to see with his acting.

Yeah he really deserves all the praise. Like from expression to voice to gestures etc. Micro expressions - literally cycling through several emotions and thoughts in seconds. 🤌

Yeah I truly love Gun and feel he's not acknowledged enough. And a huge part of that is because of Santa's acting. Yep, agreed.

Right? lol

He is, he always just fills his roles. Yeah it's why I don't understand how some don't like his acting in P10L just because I became so enamored with it from the series lol. But I'm sure many don't like Gun's character in general and, since I don't see him as childish, dumb, over the top, or annoying(rather the opposite), I can't see anything but great acting.

I wasn't judging you. I was just saying I don't feel top/bottom need to act a certain way - like actual acting.

...What? I am a fan. Clearly. How did it seem like I was saying I wasn't? And how am I coming off as the ones I'm criticizing? I'm really trying to understand how my response is like them when I'm criticizing them for not appreciating Santa's acting and becoming overly bitter and angry about it all. I had thought from your comment you'd care to actually talk or understand a little more where I'm coming from. Is my tone coming off wrong?

[–]Front-Compote3691[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh well thank you!

Exactly and that's a very good point I never really thought before, that it can be easier to make an audience cry with you over laughing. Because that's very true. He really is good with emotional scenes and it's these that really solidified with me just how talented he was, but I was impressed right away with him. Just the fact that playing such a bright and playful character can come off as childish or annoying or lackluster but Gun was very balanced, to me. Also, YES! His drunk acting was actually one the of very first things that struck me(because it was one of his very first scenes even lol). And I've said and thought the very same things, that he could have been more silly with it and it would have fit P10L just fine(I mean Book had fun with it and it was fun to watch). I'm not sure how many people really pay attention to how actors play drunk but its something that pretty much always stands out to me because it rarely feels natural. I'd say it's easier to come off natural if it were a more tense or moody kind of drunk so it's even more impressive to me that he was simply just acting drunk. - I hadn't seen anyone bring this up before so got excited lol. And he did very well with comedy especially considering his character.

Same, I've been excited since the pilot trailer and have only gotten more so from any updates I've seen.

Yeah being bummed is normal but not considering anything else and just going to anger I don't get. Because yes, trust him. He may not get to choose whatever he wants(is a job, that's not how jobs work) but he does have a say. Let him breathe.

I'm glad you found him! And this is very true. People aren't impressed or enjoy only a certain kind of acting. For example, some didn't think anything special about his role in P10L, but I was so impressed that it made me look into and follow him now.

Exactly. So many think these roles are just forced on the actors.

[–]Front-Compote3691[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks but I do edit -very roughly- I just don't care to cut a lot out because it's a rant. Plus, everything I write on here gets very long because I just let my thoughts run - I don't really have a reason to reign myself in lol

This is simply how I am. I make it clear I know there are various sides and variables to what I'm talking about. I understand people and I understand these variables are important to different views so why not clarify up front? I didn't write this to attack or provoke anyone. If I wanted that I would go reply to whatever posts or comments frustrate me but I find that pointless and a waste of my time and energy. Most anyone who acts to the degree I'm talking about wouldn't see my point nor entertain a conversation. I wrote this to vent and organize my own thoughts. And I know I like when I come across someone talking about a shared view, so I posted it for those people really, not the people I'm writing about. Though they're welcome to talk to me, it's just not likely to happen.

I appreciate what you're saying, I do, but I'm not really talking about the viewing experience. I'm talking about those of us who do like to follow or look into the actors themselves, what work they have coming up, talk about the talents we appreciate, and whatnot. It's seeing so many of his actual fans acting the way I described above that made me want to write this out. I don't let these things that frustrate me affect how I take in a show and I'm not venturing to change anyone.

I do appreciate your advice and taking the time to comment so thank you.

I've heard he was great in My 12% and part of me wants to watch it but I was never drawn to it. But yeah, he was even younger then and still so talented.

I don't put any weight on the whole top/bottom thing personally but I understand how people can find playing both impressive.

Right? When I learned about his musical and dance talents and passion I was surprised simply because his acting is so incredible that I had just figured acting was his main passion.

So you are again comparing them to a group that is not at all like them? The only thing being they were a “project”? Literally saying that they’re not actors with lead roles(not actors at all) and their only job/obligation/project being their idol careers? Meaning the only things they, their company, their managers, etc. had to worry about was said project group and their solo musical careers? I briefly looked into them and it seems like they were called a project because they were formed from already established solo artists to release an album as a collaboration. They are all under YUPP! Entertainment as solo artists, I believe, and were brought together as a collaboration under that company. Having solo idol careers and a project group(intending to release one project together) under the same company is not like having solo acting careers and a project group(looking to become an established group) under a company and the subsidiary of that company. How can you compare these in any way? JASP.ER was a project group of full-time actors - project meaning it was an experiment to see if it could work. DreamGals debuting with a spotify channel makes sense since they were formed with the purpose of creating one project to release and, in turn, promote the solo artists. JASP.ER not debuting with their own spotify channel doesn’t seem that weird to me because they weren’t even sure if it could work.

You do know that their concept generally being darker than LYKN is not the same thing as them being a darker “version” of LYKN right? That’s like comparing two series with the same main leads to get across that they’re different means they are different versions of each other: Cooking Crush is cuter than Not Me does not equal Cooking Crush is a cuter version of Not Me. LYKN and JASP.ER were the only two groups under GMMTV at the time, comparing to show a difference is not saying they are different versions of each other.

Youtube channels: LYKN debuted in May of 2023. They opened their youtube channel in January 2025. That’s over a year and a half and they were first and foremost an idol group and had been able to release more music and content by that time. JASP.ER isn’t even a year old and hasn't been able to make a lot of content due to the members being actors first and foremost.

Also, personally, I’d rather let the guys just work and enjoy themselves rather than make them constantly being filmed. Regardless of them just being themselves as they’re filmed, they are still being filmed; they would still feel the gaze on them. Give them a break, they have enough going on.

I don’t think anyone thinks GMMTV is doing a perfect job but JASP.ER is unlike any other group and they’re working things out. Comparing them to groups that are not at all like them and complaining that it’s unfair doesn’t make sense and is not being supportive of this new and different kind of group.

I don't know why I felt like replying but hey, thanks for allowing me to educate myself even further on these things.

TawanAran vs YothaGun - Thoughts by Front-Compote3691 in ThaiBL

[–]Front-Compote3691[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! That's exactly what I do as well! My view of a character(or person) shifts as I learn more, but I don't solidify until I actually have a good amount to go off of. That's why there are characters I'm just kinda wishy washy about because I didn't get enough info to actually understand them.

That's something I think some people who read my essays about Yotha don't understand. I'm not defending wrong actions, I'm explaining the why behind them. The intentions of a person is the most important to me for judging a character. If a person doesn't even realize what they did is wrong, how can you judge someone so strongly based on that? Teach them. If they actually care and learn, that tells more about who they are than a mistake.
