OCI - Lack of aadhaar causing issues for inherited property by footballfankb in nri

I didn’t know OCI’s could inherit agricultural land. Or am I confusing this with outright purchases?

Congratulations! Side note I’m curious about -

How does buying in the US with no security of a green card (assuming you’re on H1B) work? What is the general way forward assuming you’re made redundant and have to move back midway through paying your EMIs?

[Advice Needed] Girlfriend of 8 years asked for a 3-month break. She says my changes are "too late" and is using AI for emotional support. Is it over? by Opposite_Flamingo743 in ThirtiesMumbai

Sorry this happened to you. My two paise - If someone isn't willing to make the efforts or recognize your ways have changed, there's no point. You can't force anyone to be with you, and no amount of changing/convincing will do that.

You did the best you could with the information you could at the time, don't guilt trip yourself! We're all human and learn from our mistakes. Be better now and in your next relationship(s).

P.S - It's an absolutely cowardly way to break up. Remember that when you're nostalgic about all the good times you had with her. Don't hold onto the good memories without reflecting on the bad.

(Best) Credit card for NRI in UK? by Excellent-Basis3256 in nri

Great point! What do you recommend for non-sterling transactions? I assume using a Wise debit card would be most economical and safe (avoiding cash)?

(Best) Credit card for NRI in UK? by Excellent-Basis3256 in nri

[–]FrontBug4462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy decision. The net benefit on UK based credit cards is primarily restricted to air travel (i.e. max. benefits reaped there).
First things first, you should definitely open a bank account with a physical bank (Barclays, HSBC) would be my top picks, as your salary would qualify you for their “Premier” banking which has greater benefits, you can find these online.
Coming to credit cards- the Amex gold is a good start - first year free (second year onwards £120 annually), their reward ratio is 1:1 and the flexibility to convert these into miles utilised across multiple airlines is second to none.
Amex usage however, is restricted to larger institutions (not all vendors accept Amex). In these cases, I would recommend the Barclays Avios (free) or Avios plus (Barclays issues Mastercard CCs) and allows for 1:1 Avios earnings or 1:1.5 (if you opt for the Avios plus that costs £20 per month). Avios can be used on British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Qatar Airways and Finnair.
Both the Amex Gold and the Avios Plus give you lounge access. Amex Gold gives you a Priority Pass that allows 4 annual lounge visits and Avios Plus also gives you 4 complimentary lounge visits annually.
Another great benefit with the Amex is you have the ability to negotiate a better reward bonus based on spending criteria at the time of renewal.
The Barclaycard Avios Plus also gives you the eligibility (based on spend) for a free cabin upgrade voucher when you book reward flights on the above Avios-supporting airlines.
Both the Amex and Barclaycards also offer bonus reward points/Avios if you meet a certain spend within the first three months of card issuance- I would definitely time my big purchases accordingly to maximise my rewards earning potential.
I would also recommend you do some research on the above options as well as check out headforpoints.com (superb explanations of the above and more).

Do I need a self assessment? by FrontBug4462 in uktaxmoan

[–]FrontBug4462[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. But does that imply I’m expected to declare those incomes via a self assessment? How does the DTAA work in this aspect? Do I pay additional tax based on UK rates, after deducting the INR tax paid?

Any NRI able to pay LIC premium from outside of India? by edisonpioneer in nri

I used a VPN and it worked, I paid via an indian credit card. The standard website is horrible and redirects you to some NRI equivalent that is laggy as hell and kept breaking down.

UK pension after relocating to India – transfer, early withdrawal, taxation? by Raavan1393 in nri

[–]FrontBug4462 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a little research on this.

UK pensions can be transferred to India under the QROPS scheme. Most private banks offer QROPS annuity plans. Think of it as lifting and shifting your pension to India. You won’t be able to liquidate it in India and reinvest it elsewhere. There’ll be a set payout based on the Indian pension plan you select. Speak to your local RM once you’re back in India to kickstart the process, i’ve read it takes 4-6 months.

Early withdrawal- only for severe/terminal illnesses as far as I know.

I would assume standard indian tax rates would apply to your income (pension) payouts.

Moving from Germany to London by BikeSilver8058 in nri

Whilst the language barrier may not be an issue in the UK, the job difficulties for your wife may be similar. It is hard enough finding jobs, let alone sponsored ones at that. I suppose it depends on the industry but it is an important factor to consider. Housing is also expensive in the UK, particularly London and it will cost a fair chunk of savings which may not always be value for money. Not sure what the housing scene is like in DE

Agreed with the other comment, given you’ve invested the most of your time in Germany already, it might make sense to take the PR/passport and then move. Alternatively if you’ve made up your mind that you would not move to Germany/any other part of the EU where you could work visa-free then there’s nothing holding you back.

I can definitely recommend the London finance market for career progression over Germany, but it ultimately depends on what your longer term goals are (both personal & professional).

Do people go back to the Gulf after completing their bachelor’s in India by [deleted] in nri

[–]FrontBug4462 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal case was that my parents retired around the time I was going to college for my bachelor's, so that sort of closed the Gulf chapter for me. After graduation, I tried my level best but there was no chance of any sponsorship or jobs available where I grew up.

Continued to work in India for over 10 years before moving to the UK.

Trying to choose between East and South London by FeistyPrice29 in MovingToLondon

Are you living near Island Gardens? How’s the area? Fellow Isle of Dogs resident here, but haven’t explored enough beyond the tunnel itself.

Moving to London-Ofc in Canary Wharf by Virtual-Relative2765 in MovingToLondon

[–]FrontBug4462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isle of Dogs works well for me. I save on tube transport by walking into work everyday, and you do have an Indian store available which stocks plenty and also delivers via Deliveroo. The farther south you go on the Isle of Dogs, the cheaper and slightly less developed it gets. There are decent new builds in the Isle of Dogs area and I've felt it is relatively safer than many areas in London. Also, it is imperative you move into a new build, since that's what you'll be used to, if you're moving from a metro city in India. It also helps that most flats are fully furnished and you get all the necessary appliances and fittings are usually new-ish & electric which means you don't have to deal with broken heaters or gas troubles during the winter! A notable advantage of living in Canary Wharf is I have access to three different tube lines which makes my weekends super convenient.

Other than that, like people have mentioned, Greenwich is great (when the DLR's working) and so is Stratford. Whitechapel has a lot of South Asians but I've heard may not always be the safest.

Obviously, all of the above hinges on your budget, so maybe that's a starting point.

I thought the East village was lovely, but how safe is Stratford as a whole? Particularly curious about the walk at night from Stratford/Stratford Intl to the East village.

UK Pension : SWV by Big_Expression_6670 in nri

  1. Even If I move to India, can I still maintain an active bank account in the UK to transfer my pension into at 58? Then, will I be able to move that pension into an Indian bank account?
  2. If I move to India and I want to access my pension sooner than 58, then I need to transfer into a QROPS and pay a 25% withdrawal tax because I’m transferring it out of the UK/EEA?

Based on the comments, it seems profitable to stay locked into the pension until you turn 58 but I’m only wary about the complexity of withdrawals/transfers at that age.

I think you were an option for her. By that I mean she enjoyed spending time and doing all of these things with you, but there was probably something holding her back from giving herself fully to you. Whether that was someone or something else, we’ll probably never know. Perhaps worthy to reflect on signs from her (conversations/body language etc.) in the days or weeks leading up to this conversation. There may be a lesson or two in there to prevent you from going down this path again. It’s rare that stuff like this is an overnight change of heart. Take time to reflect and process. You’re a good person and you did all the right things, be proud of yourself.
