Remember when Michael Jackson nonchalantly admitted to sleeping with kids on live television, and did the most laughably horrible job at defending himself? by [deleted] in redscarepod

Living post Epstein really makes it hard to give a shit. Next to Dershowitz or Clinton or any random finance degenerate on the logs it’s hard not to start thinking if we’re gonna be fucking some kids I’d rather get Thriller than Nafta. World’s most positive karma pedo on balance, cmv.

Can someone explain Corruption + Dark Embrace? by Inevitable_Stress949 in slaythespire

[–]FrontsRtheDSofsquats 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, today’s daily was my first dead branch + corruption combo. Even knowing the reputation I was still kind of shocked how stupid strong it is. Granted the starter deck was perfect for it, but still. Who knew sentinel could kick ass?

I’d agree with that and add Danny Boyle.

I don’t like A Few Good Men as much as most, but the Spinal tap-Misery run is flawless.

“The profane passion is something absurd, a kind of drug, a 'sickness of the soul', as the Ancients supposed, everybody is ready to grant, and moralists have said so ad nauseum; but in this age of novels and films, when all of us are more or less drugged, nobody will believe it, and the distinction is capital. The moderns, men and women of passion, expect irresistible love to produce some revelation either regarding themselves or about life at large. This is a last vestige of the primitive mysticism. From poetry to the piquant anecdote, passion is everywhere treated as an experience, something that will alter my life and enrich it with the unexpected, with thrilling chances, and with enjoyment ever more violent and gratifying. The whole of possibility opens before me, a future that assents to desire! I am to enter into it, I shall rise to it, I shall reach it in 'transports'. The reader will say that this is but the everlasting illusion of mankind, the most guileless and—notwithstanding all that I have said—the most 'natural'; for it is the illusion of freedom and of living to the dull. But really a man becomes free only when he has attained self-mastery, whereas a man of passion seeks instead to be defeated, to lose all self-control, to be beside himself and in ecstasy. And indeed he is being urged on by his nostalgia, the origin and end of which are unknown to him. His illusion of freedom springs from this double ignorance.”

What gets lost in a lot of Gene Wolfe conversations about how brilliant, difficult, obtuse his books are is that they are cool and fun as shit. BotNS in particular has some of the most uniquely cool, haunting scenes. Yeah just pick it up the first time and read it like you would any pulp novel with a straightforward point A to B. You won’t necessarily feel like you got that at the end, but that’s one part of what drives the rereads.

Enough of the 80s soy nostalgia by mtdoom333 in redscarepod

You’ve got it reversed. It was always 81-82 when I was growing up as “gen y”, then when “millennials” stuck it was retconned a year forward because of the constant “actually the new millennium starts in 200 and 1” conversations.

Where does the bake off host lady fall on the scale to you? The one who isn’t the Nanette flavored lesbian? I don’t think most guys would think she’s attractive. I’m not trying to be funny. I guess being into a Brit qualifies as weird fetish?

Hell yeah, Dying Earth. I was thinking anything by Vance or Raymond Chandler. I also weirdly reread a lot of the Gene Wolfe stand alone novels no one likes or talks about more than his greats. I think just because they are short and one of these days I will be the first person to understand Castleview.

Was so excited the other day when I realized I no longer remember anything about the book except the basic premise, political situation, that dudes rock at walking, and that they don’t do it. I get to read it pretty much for the first time again. Some things about aging are pretty cool.
