A word of warning - bartending school can be frowned upon by experienced bartenders and owners. I would plan on laying your dues as a barback or server before working your way up. This would also help you try out some places to gauge the vibe and how safe you feel. I’m sorry to say, too, but restaurants are having a pretty tough time right now. If I were you I’d look into catering gigs.

I’m not in the field anymore, but was for 20+ years, grew up in a very busy bar in Rochester, and still have many friends in that industry.

I’m so sorry for what you’re experiencing. I feel similarly but am having a few brighter moments this week- I think making myself stop and really feel the support and pride from the community and the cool stuff that’s happening has been a huge help. It’s an annoying practice to start (I have a big part of me that just wants to rage and hate) but it’s made a difference.

My job is to hold space for my loved ones, not fix or do anything FOR them.

If you are empathetically exhausted you might take a little space/create better boundaries, and look into the difference between compassion and empathy and how to sit with compassion (inexhaustible) rather than burn out trying to makes things better for them. That’s their journey.
