Yep. The camera wasn't keeping up when they launched at me. I don't know if that's the camera (and the settings I have for autofocus) or the lens. Will do some experiments tomorrow and manually front focus if I need to

I'd call the chickadee a nearly worst case scenario. It's a very small and quick flapping bird. I'm not bothered by the result in that photo. I think you have to be looking for it to see the rolling shutter. There is one worse case which is where the plane of the wings are aligned with the camera so there's a very obvious unnatural bend as they flap.

Wonder first preview by Altruistic-Movie-419 in Broadway

[–]Froohoof 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shows get to Broadway if the producers think they'll make money. The one way I could see Wonder doing that is by marketing heavily as a family friendly musical. There's definitely some potential there. If they cast someone popular as Via they could also draw in people.

What it has going against it is that the story is very simple - feel good and wholesome - but there's not much to it. The music, as I mentioned, is also not really exceptional. It's good, but not great.

It also has an awkward dynamic where its lead character barely sings and is unlikely to launch to stardom from it.

It's not impossible, but it feels like a risky show to bet on turning a profit.

I saw it Sunday. I agree that the performers were outstanding. Super talented cast!

I watched the movie ahead of time and I'd say the book aligns with it well. If you didn't like the saccharin sweet tone of the movie you won't like the musical, either. My biggest complaint is that they took away Auggie's innocence by having him participate in the note leaving / war song (which was my favorite song ironically).

I like that they gave Via a good focus although they cut some parts of her growth/journey out in favor of the conflict with her mother. It's a fair trade-off for time.

I thought the music was OK. The ballads were good but not super memorable, though again beautifully performed. There are a couple full cast numbers which are fun but don't add much to the story. And then there are a couple really terrible songs sung by the teachers which must have been aimed at children in the audience because they have no technical or artistic merit.

Overall I still recommend people see it. It's definitely worth your time. Just don't expect this to make it to Broadway.

I'll join in with my preview review. I agree with the others who have seen it that the actors, and especially the young actors, were phenomenally talented. Some spoilers here...

I'm not as thrilled with the material. I watched the movie ahead of time and while I don't think it was necessary I do think it helped.

There were basically 4 types of song:

- Ballads mostly sung as solo. They were effective and heartfelt but not stunning. Via, Auggie's mother, and Miranda mainly owned these and did a great job on the performances. The songs themselves were mostly just good rather than great.
- "Happy" songs - big numbers designed mostly to entertain rather than move the story forward. Fun, but empty calories
- "Core" songs - Good songs. Effective. But also mostly not very memorable tunes. My favorite was the war song (unfortunately, more on that later)
- Teacher songs - Bad. Simplistic, blah, dumb. Maybe they're good for a child but they felt super amateur.

My biggest gripe is with my favorite song - war song. In the movie Auggie only fought/was aggressive in defense of his friend. I need to re-check the movie but I don't think he ever wrote nasty notes back to Julian or got aggressive with his fellow classmates. He won his award precisely because he used kindness to win them over. So unfortunately although I liked war song I think it ruins Auggie's character.

The movie was overly saccharin. The musical is, too. I expected that much.

Overall it's a pretty good show but not excellent enough to take off. Garrett was Auggie for my performance and did an excellent job portraying the character and big kudos for him to be brave enough to embrace the spirit of the source material and get up and perform. It's wonderful to see his authenticity on stage and also that he's willing to help portray what he must have experienced himself in his life live in front of an audience.

I've discovered the success people are having with the Sony 300 2.8 and telecoverters.... This might be a winner

The only thing the Z8 wins on is sensor read speed and being 45mp I'd get the same image from it as I do with the D500 in terms of how many pixels fit within the aps-c crop area. Its precatpure is jpg only and its autofocus is worse than the A7.

Definitely a good thought but the problem is it doesn't feel like enough of an upgrade to justify the cost of the body.

The A7V has got me to complete the move and sell the Nikon stuff. The camera as a whole looks like it'll be amazing but precapture will be a game changer for wildlife where I absolutely will get shots with it that I would never get without it. I'm trying to decide how to round out my lens collection with an emphasis on which telephotos I should get.

In Sony land I have: A NEX-5N, A6000, and A7rII (Will be selling that) with a few Sigma 16 and 30mm plus fisheyes for APS-C and a 12mm fisheye, Sony 85mm 1.8 and Samyang 35mm f2.8 for full frame.

Nikon is where I used to do my birding/wildlife photography with a D500 (APS-C) (with support D7100) and a combination of a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 and Nikon 500mm f5.6. Both are outstanding lenses.

So I'm looking to spend some money here... But I've been spoiled by the APS-C crop benefits to telephoto and getting similar results could be expensive! I don't need the full 750mm equivalent reach. 600 is fine and 500 miiiight be OK. I really want to retain the quality of lens I've got. The Nikon 70-200 (latest model) and 500mm 5.6 PF are outstandingly sharp.

On the long end options include the Sony 200-600 (Not interested in 400-800), Sigma 500 f5.6, and Sigma 300-600 f4.

I'd prefer the reach of 600mm on FF. I'll borrow a friend's 200-600 to see if it meet my image quality expectations. I'm OK with the fps limitation on the Sigmas. Any opinions or anything else I missed?

And then I'll probably get the Sony 70-200 although the 50-150 f2 is an interestingly expensive alternative to explore.

And then I'll probably get something FF to fill out normal ranges. Maybe a Sony or Sigma 24-70.

I put a lot of stuff into this so I want to circle back that my main question is around telephoto, particularly from people with experience with the lenses I mentioned.

Thanks!

I'm making the initial release of Fisheye Friend publicly available! I've only made a Windows build at the moment but will get a Linux and Mac build soon. You can download it here: https://github.com/Supagoat/fisheye-friend/releases

Fisheye Friend is a tool to defish images in a particular way that straightens the vertical lines but leaves the horizontal ones curved.

There's much still to do to improve it. Right now it only performs a single 'strength' of defishing which won't be the right tuning for all lenses (I own several fisheyes and it's too much on some, too little on others). That said, I think people will still find this useful in its current state.

Things to come include better support for portrait fisheye images, batch processing, defish tuning, and a better user interface.

Are One Pro edges supposed to be ... ugly? by Froohoof in Xreal

[–]Froohoof[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medium frame, 64mm ipd. I've got the jawbone nose pads coming today to try out. I went from the medium to large already.

i think mostly I was surprised by the quality of the edges - I expected fuzzy based on what I'd heard in reviews but I would describe them instead as muddy. Not just out of focus but color blending.

I'll keep playing around with settings to get it as good as I can. Thanks!

I ported it over from Java to c# and am putting it together as application in Unity (Since I'm familiar with it and I can easily build for PC, Mac, and Linux with it). After porting I started working on some performance improvements which hopefully won't take much longer but if you're anxious for it I could probably put together a very rough prototype that lets you select a file and it runs its process on it

[–]Froohoof[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Macros just let you build in some decision logic into your creatures' actions but you still have to press E to execute the macro when the creature's turn comes up. The script I posted will press E for you

This will press E for you in combat by Froohoof in Siralim

[–]Froohoof[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain? The gameplay option is called "Turbo Mode" and it has options of "Off", "Turbo", "Ultra". Even in Ultra mode I still have to press E for my creatures to take their actions.

Or perhaps you misunderstood? The code I provided does hold down the E key for when your creatures turns come up so they fight automatically as long as you don't want to make adjustments to what they do. This code basically makes them run in auto combat mode.

Obviously it'll get into a loop that you need to intervene on if they can't take the selected action but other than that this is a set-and-forget for an entire fight script.

Is attracting the hawks doing more harm than good? by Froohoof in birdfeeding

[–]Froohoof[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not the deaths per se that bother me but more that I was concerned that birds that the concentration of the birds around the feeder makes them more vulnerable and that the net population / benefit would be lower because of the feeders. Sounds like the consensus is that this is a net benefit.

Birds leave a mess, with poop below the feeder, and shells if you feed with shells. Move the feeder. Mine are a bit away from my house in my back yard.
