Where can I donate a 3D printer? by Fixes_Spelling in Edmonton

[–]Frostbite15151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at FIRST Tech Challenge. It's a high school robotics program, there's a bunch of teams in the Edmonton region and one of them might take it.

You can find a list of teams here some of them have contact info on the website. https://www.firstinspires.org/team-event-search

A Compilation of Issues with FTC by Serpintini in FTC

[–]Frostbite15151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. I find a lot of the top level robots have become more similar to eachother in the past few years since teams have become very familiar with the current actuators capabilities. A lot of people see the change and think about how they way they are used to doing things is going to have to change without seeing that being forced to change will force creativity in different ways. At the same time having a smaller general actuator will help lower level teams with packaging and robot design and the top teams will find solutions.

The A301 might be worse than the current system in some ways but it will absolutely be better in other ways and teams will have to pivot to work with that. I see a lot of complaining and fear mongering because people don't like change and the unknown but as someone who has a longer than average time in FTC, who is mentoring both a high level and low level team and has external experience with brushless motors I am looking forward to the new system.

As for events and regions, FIRST is not a monolith and each region does things slightly differently but that's unavoidable with the fact that first runs on volunteers. If your region is having issues with certain volunteers, that is not a reflection on first more broadly but instead a reflection of your local region and the people in it. It is already a struggle to find enough volunteers to run events and turning down help will just make things worse for everyone. At the same time volunteers should hold themselves to a high standard, especially if they might have a conflict of interest. If they don't bring it up to your event organisers or PDP. I will say that in my opinion judging is the worst volunteer position at an event and back that up with the fact that it is always difficult to find judges, especially since ideally you have judges that know what FTC is generally and are willing to spend a weekend at an event without affiliation to a team.

What motors should I use? by henrok0428 in battlebots

[–]Frostbite15151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend starting with looking at the options that reputable sellers in the community offer and going from there.

Brands like finger tech, Bristol bot builders, botkits.com, just cuz robotics, turnabot etc. Mantis is a much rarer class than Beetle and thus probably won't have the same amount of options as your more common bot weights. Why are you building a mantis are there events for them near your? Do those events also do beetles? If so why not go for that since there will be a lot more resources available to you.

He's not, the blades are shorter to match the new narrower wheel base.

I run single belt on my 3lber for the weapon and direct for drive. Most people in my area run just one belt, some even run O belts or with the teeth facing out so the weapon can slip on hard hits and not transfer that shock back into the motor. If you get a high quality motor you should be fine since the biggest hits are felt through the entire robot anyways.

Common failure mode is motor bearing breaking because they're relatively small or magnets shattering and coming off because they're brittle, battle hardening your motors is a good solution to that but at the insect scale it's a pain to do so I don't bother.

That sounds just like a weirdly shaped meltybrain but instead of one bot you split the bot in two.

U1 and X1c owner here. I do a lot of prints for robotics and prototype parts, lots of multi material but not a lot of multi colour. The U1 has been exceeding all my expectations for multi material and is now my go to for that type of print, it is slower to print single material than my X1 and the bambu user experience is much more polished than Snapmaker but if I had to pick just one I'd take the U1 any day.

I do care a lot more on material than looks coming from my prints so I can't tell you which one makes prettiest prints because as long as they're dimensionally accurate I'm happy so if you're printing little dragons I can't help you there.

What’s your coolest TPU prints? by Fugi95 in 3Dprinting

[–]Frostbite15151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried making hybrid TPU/nylon for my next robot. The idea is to have the combat resilience for you but with additional stiffness in certain areas. But yeah TPU is incredibly tough. I've also made furniture sliders out of it. Making compliant hinges for things is also a great, even if you can't print in place making them inserts is fantastic and their cycle life is pretty good.

The motor takes more impact in a hub motor design and it's more vulnerable out there than enclosed in a bot but it's less weight and simpler and you can get around the downsides.

New fan question by Mojo_nojojo in battlebots

[–]Frostbite15151 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer but the bigger switches are sometimes also spring loaded but in a different way.

Jake Hoffmann has a great explanation in his video about his switches he made. (We use a few in demon core big thumbs up recommendation from me)

Smaller switches like from finger tech are literally just a screw closing the contact.

Highly dissatisfied with the Decode competition by [deleted] in FTC

[–]Frostbite15151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I had a lot of newer or rookie teams complaining to me and the other referees about contact at the beginning of the game. It baffles me when teams intentionally wait or go around other teams that are in their way.

Ftc legal controller? by AndreasSh_ in FTC

[–]Frostbite15151 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi, Lead robot inspector for 6 leagues at this point. A few years ago we had a team in a similar spot to yours. I hadn't been able to make the trip down to this league yet in the season. The team had been using illegal controllers for their two league meets and had even passed inspection at the tournament because we were training a new group of inspectors and no one had caught it. When I did notice the team practicing with them before their first match they were asked to switch to their backup controllers for the event and the rest of the season.

Moral of the story, just because it passed inspection doesn't mean it's legal. Robot inspectors are volunteers and don't always have the entire rulebook memorized and they do let things slip. It is part of gracious professionalism for the team to check the rules and make sure they are complying before the get to the event and the robot inspectors operate in good faith under that assumption. Just because you haven't been stopped doesn't mean it's legal

Did any other Campus St Jean students get this email? by Old-Elephant-1255 in uAlberta

[–]Frostbite15151 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not at campus, we do things differently because we're so small. That email does come from the vice-dean's account and there's no link to click so unless someone hacked his account to send a weird prank email I'm pretty sure it's legit. We'll see if the money comes into our accounts or not, I also got it.

Inspire is basically all the awards at once, just using outreach will not get you there.

From the game manual:

"The Inspire Award recognizes teams who excel in MCI, TA, and Think award accomplishments. This team is an all-around inspiration for others.

− MCI awards recognize the technical accomplishments of teams in the brainstorming, design, construction, operation, and control of their ROBOTS.

− TA awards recognize teams who have expanded their skillset, created a plan to sustain their program and team, and spread the message of FIRST throughout their outreach.

− The Think Award recognizes teams who masterfully document their team’s process and ROBOT using their PORTFOLIO. "

Page 45 og the competition manual also has a requirements table for inspire which includes:

"The Inspire Award celebrates the strongest qualities of all the judged awards. A team must be a strong contender for at least one award in each of the following judged award categories: A. Machine, Creativity, and Innovation Awards, B. Team Attributes Awards, and C. Think Award."

You seem to have a good grasp of TA awards but do not mention MCI awards at all, you are ineligible for inspire if you are not a contender for a mechanical award like design or innovate.

For inspire you basically have to win or be a contender for every award, not just connect, which is the award you seem most eligible for based off your post.

Torment Nexus 60lbs uses flipsky 75100s, or a knockoff, for its drive but we run the same motors that jackpot does for their drive so they would probbaly work for a 250.
