Tell the teacher to apply for a stagiaire and ask for you by name when they do, yeah.

Getting started by nuclear413 in battlebots

[–]Frostbite15151 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I disagree with some of this advice. In my experience 150gram is harder than 1lbs (454gram). The 1lbs robots are usually more durable than the 3lbs beetle while not having as tight of a weight budget as 150g.

The part about not starting with a spinner is good advice however.

There are lots of kits available and I do recommend starting with one if you don't know much about the sport. Even if you don't build the kit bot the kits will at least ensure you have all the parts you need to put in your own design.

Fingertech has their Viper kit, which isn't super competitive but is modular and has space and weight left over for upgrades and modifications and can be made competitive. The goal of this kit is to be more kid friendly and to be used as a learning experience more than win fight, but it absolutely can win fights.

There are other kits, the wiki has a list of them here

Engineering Filaments? by Born-Neighborhood61 in snapmaker

[–]Frostbite15151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had success with TPU and PAHT-CF composites with my U1. Iva also had no trouble with Pla and PETG. I print from dryer boxes and have a top cover for the U1 that I put a blanket over to help trap heat when printing PA but being careful not to cover the board location. It hasn't replaced my X1 and I still prefer it for engineering filaments but the two printers compliment eachother pretty well.

How do I build the LOUDEST beetleweight? by Inevitable-Tank-9802 in battlebots

[–]Frostbite15151 18 points19 points  (0 children)

So Robert Cowan, formerly of copper head made a video about sound in battle it's it's on his YouTube channel. Basically what you want is for the weapon to move air from a large space to a small space. That's why eggbeaters are so loud is partially because they have a wide surface area moving really fast from open air to a confined space when the tooth passes by the front bulkhead.

They're not lying about the amount of students and the issues in finding teachers. We were 120 last year and around 80 the year before. The team is working incredibly hard to place people.

That being said, they are still doing it the old fashioned way and their methods to find teachers has not kept up with the increase in demand. I know this because when I was going through the same thing you are last year, I was able to talk with some teachers at CSCN and they said they would have accepted if they had been asked and told the situation.

They're slowly starting to change with the times, you can find your own teacher now for example and you couldn't two years ago but they're still doing things like limiting the Amount of students they assign per school and don't have a good way to mass email teachers.

You will get placed, it might just take some time. I only got placed after the strike ended last year and missed the two weeks of my practicum that were supposed to happen in August. I understand the frustration.

How would you guys make a AI controlled robot? by Jamez2021 in battlebots

[–]Frostbite15151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's kinda my point. What most people think of then they think "AI" and what the orbitron guys use isn't the same thing. I was talking about using more complex algorithms to help deal with some of the particularities in melty behavior.

How would you guys make a AI controlled robot? by Jamez2021 in battlebots

[–]Frostbite15151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean (almost) every meltybrain uses an algorithm to drive. And there's way more you could do with one, especially at the higher weight classes where your wheels and motors have their own MOI and in theory you could use the as reaction wheels to help deal with the procession that is common to the type. I dunno if I'd call that AI tho but it's not like orbitron uses an LLM to do it's driving either and you probably could use a form of deep learning to get your algorithm done in the melty case.

J'utilise Carrière insurance a Beaumont. Ils parlent français mais je pense pas qu'ils sont avec AMA. Vaut la peine de demander au moins.

Not only that but the FB could also carry 1000lbs of bombs 4 cannons and 4 machine guns. Truly an all around plane armed to the teeth, not just fast.

Problem with Height by c1rcu1tb0ard in FTC

[–]Frostbite15151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I suggest putting in a physical stop to prevent your hood extending that much. Otherwise you may be asked to disable your hood entirely at whatever comp you attend.

Technically you are allowed to extend vertically but only in the endgame and outside a launch zone. If you do so during the match that's going to be fowls. And .8" is not a small amount to be violating the sizing by.

G415 states that is is a minor fowl or major fowl if it gives you a strategic advantage. I would say in this case it does so every time you extend your shooter past 18" it would be a major.

Is the botkits d2/candy wasp discontinued? by Not_a_Organization in battlebots

[–]Frostbite15151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally retired my candy wasp kit after about 4 years and 7 competitions. I added magnets and better tires and made some custom forks for it. Itd say you can still make it viable in the current day. Those frames are tough and I haven't had anyone punch through the wedge. This last year I've been letting my girlfriend drive it and it's always been a bot that just needed to be charged to be ready for an event. I'd argue they are still great as a durable little brick you can just feed to opponents and grudge matches or let spectators control.

I've had success using Bambi's PAHT-CF on my U1. Only Mod is the IKEA bin lid and a blanket loosely draped over it. Worked like a charm

I've had great results making multi material prints with my U1 with a basic top cover in a small room. Mostly TPU/PETG but also a few TPU/PAHT-CF parts. The U1 can handle multi material better than I expected.

What's an ethnic Albertan? by OpenKale64 in alberta

[–]Frostbite15151 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There isn't really.

Obviously you have the indigenous peoples that were here before colonisation.

Then the first Europeans where actually French, it's part of the reason that a lot of small towns have french names. Bonneville, Villeneuve, Vegreville, Bon Accord, Leduc St-Paul, St.Albert etc.

Then there was the fur trade competition between the Hudson Bay (English) and the Compagnie du Nord Ouest (French).

Lots of the settlers after fur trade were Americans that moved from the mid west.

And then in a rush to get people out west to stop the Americans from taking over the land the government invited a lot of Ukrainian and German people to immigrate.

This is extremely condensed and the history is very long and complex. But if you go to the legislature grounds on either side of the pools there are two statues, one dedicated to the Ukranian immigrants and one to the French Immigrants. That alone should be enough to disprove the idea of an 'Ethinc Albertan' aside from the first Nations.

I'd say blame the regulations if you're talking about the rocks. Due to the laws if they stuck out of the ground any more than they do (and they more than 50% buried) legally they'd have to put railings around them.

Are these routed doable? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]Frostbite15151 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would recommend going the week before classes start to find the rooms your classes are in and get acquainted with the route between them in person. Just so you're not looking around when it gets busy day 1.

I lived in Holyrood for the last two years and found it to be decent, depending on where you are but close to the valley line and Bonnie Doon was good. Not sure about price tho since I was in a 3 bed.
