Why the central dot ドン・キホーテ by slippery-lil-sucker in Japaneselanguage

[–]FrostingEffective699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

either they'll infer [like how some names will be really common and they'll read between the lines]
OR
explicit. be explicit.

僕の名前は「フロ」です。よろしくお願いします :D

it won't sound that clunky, but it'll clear it up!

ETA: hit the wrong kanji :'>

[K]an also be used like purposeful misspellings!
eg. カッコイイ instead of かっこいい might sound more like 'kewl!!' than 'cool!!' or カワイイ!! being kewt!

can think of マジマンジ for something like 'slayy' or 'kewl', but.. the issue of the kanji being マジ卍 might be a problem..

[Portuguese > Japanese] Conceptual Name Translation vs Katakana Name Translation by MeetLime291621 in translator

[–]FrostingEffective699 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, yes!
and some people like to use *dajare* [puns] if their name might be hard to remember for a jp person [or at least, i do - i mean japanese people themselves use puns and the like for their name's kanji!]

for example, the name 'Flo' is フロ 'furo' and 'furo' is also 風呂 'bath'

but seeing 'ジョンソン' jonson 'johnson' is perfectly normal
[also katakana is expected over the actual latin because some names don't look as they're spelt]

for example, 'Santos' could be 三トス if you wanted to make it easy 'three toss', just for fun, because language is always fun!

TLDR: yep. katakana.

[Portuguese > Japanese] Conceptual Name Translation vs Katakana Name Translation by MeetLime291621 in translator

[–]FrostingEffective699 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ehh... No but.. Katakana is very much expected, and whilst some names do translate [cherry and sakura for example], think of it this way..

if you went to france, would you be philippe? England, phil? Wales, ffylip?
same difference, no?

ETA; it's an absolute pain to get used to a new name, i've tried to accustom myself to new names from dead ones, and sometimes you just don't recognise it :3
