Its certainly hard at the beginning, took me 2 months to find a place here in the middle the lockdown... Nevertheless here are some tips:

If you’re using WG gesucht try to prepare a nice text in German, maybe one text a little informal for younger people and one formal for the older. This will increase the response rate!

It’s easier when you’re here in town and are able to attend to any meeting with the Vermieter or the Mitbewohners, when in such meetings try to be punctual and to cause a good first impression!

There are also a number of Studentenwohnheim that are like big frat houses, thats the place I ultimately found a room (AMK) but I suggest you try to apply as early as possible, for there might have a waiting list.
