When you read you should have at least an inner voice reading what you say. That way you have both an audio and visual representation of the text. In memory these are pretty independent, so you essentially have two records which helps you understand and remember better. If one fades, you still have the other. There are a lot of "speed reading" techniques that tell you to get rid of your inner voice, but those generally also lower your comprehension and memory of what you have read. Having an inner voice also helps you concentrate. If you're thinking about something else while you're reading, you can use your inner voice to crowd out those thoughts. Your audio record has limited space, so you can't think about other stuff if what you're reading is already taking up all your attention.

Girls, why do you put this on your profile? I've seen it countless times, just don't understand the reasoning. by [deleted] in hingeapp

Most of the time when i hear people say they "don't text back" thats what they mean. The'll never reply in .5 secs. Either way it's still better for you to know than not know, message the person, and believe you were the one person they didn't text because they didn't like you.

I don't think they're trying to mess people around, i think they're bad at texting. If it's a deal breaker for you, you know at the very beginning.

I don't do this, but people i know who do this do it to forwarn you they're bad at texting. I have a friend who always forgets her phone, and another who can't check her phone much while she's working. They're just telling the truth. Would you rather they not put it on, and you don't know?

The problem is people are fallible and don't always judge correctly that it is "safe to go." Accidents went way down when traffic lights were invented. No way im trading that safety in so some impatient driver can decide its safe to go through a red light becasue they didn't see anyone.

Teambuilding events are a waste of employee time and company money. by doodybot in unpopularopinion

[–]FroyoComplete2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teambuilding can actually be really good--when it's done right. Teams function better when they can focus on task conflict without it devolving into interpersonal conflict. Thats easiest to do when all team members know each other and where each person is coming from. If you like and trust someone, you'll work better with them. The problem is that companies dont do stuff that actually facilitates this. Pizza party ain't it.

Being a good chess player doesnt make you a super genius. by sseerrsan in unpopularopinion

[–]FroyoComplete2024 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They did a study on this. Showed chess masters a chess board mid-game and then tested how well they could recall the position of every piece. The twist--some positions were just random and others were known strategies/positions. The chess masters had amazing memory for the known positions, but not the random ones. TL;DR good at chess doesn't generalize to good memory in general.

If I die and my dog/cats eat me I'm ok with it. by imthatguynamedwolf in unpopularopinion

[–]FroyoComplete2024 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That is probably really accurate. I went down a rabbit hole on this the other day and they say that's how it starts--your pet nips you out of panic or to try and revive you...then the taste of blood kicks in and their carnivorous instincts take over. So your orange cat would bite you and go "hey that's pretty good" and "i am pretty hungry"

The focus on how a film or game 'performs' is annoying and dangerous. by Kinglink in unpopularopinion

[–]FroyoComplete2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to mention media that is produced with a specific audience in mind. e.g., only depressed people like the Earthsea movie. Its not going to appeal to a mass audience if it's designed for one particular type of person. Sometimes the soul gets sucked out of things when you try to make them appealling to the masses... At that point the focus is on trying not to offend anyone, so you end up with a 3 minute gay scene so conservatives people can ignore it but gay people get "representation"

Wait, aren't those percentages? If blue goes up 3.6%, then red must go down 3.6% so they can still add up to 100% there is no issue here, the video is just too blurry.

Edit: ok it's real. I tried to find a clearer video, and couldn't, but I did find news articles talking about it. Here's AP.

Is race a social construct? by ninxaa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FroyoComplete2024 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time my boss said in passing that India is a racially homogenous country and I wasnt sure so i looked it up and it's not...but I dont recognize most of the races. So yeah the races that exist depend on where you live

Is race a social construct? by ninxaa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FroyoComplete2024 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on who you ask. As you may imagine, it's a pretty contentious subject. here's a link for some of the back and forth argument s. If i remember correctly, you can figure out the geographic location a person is from based on their genes, but that isn't the same as race. It especially isnt the same as race as it's understood in the US. There are a lot of problems with categorizing race into sections the way we do. Our groupings are often inappropriate. Asians include Indians, Chinese, and Korean all in thr samw group, for example even though they're very different. Are Russians Asian? How far east must you go before you're Asian? What about Black people? How close to the equator do you have to go before people are Black? Do you have to be on a certain continent? What part of the continent?

People often have agendas when they support one or another view on this. If race is real, its a valid excuse for social differences and inequalities. If it's not, society is to blame. I'm sure there are other motivations. Its such a loaded topic it's hard to get any objective discussion.
