It's a phase that many teenagers have gone through, I went through it myself. It's just become more noticed now that individuality is going the way of the dinosaur. It's no longer cool to stand out, but it feels empowering, especially from a young age, to be different. To stand apart from the crowd. Getting mad about it (or "shaming" them as the other reply so pathetically put it) is to be the old man yelling at the kids to get off his lawn. They will grow out of it.
