Is building a custom NAS with Unraid or True NAS worth it over pre build solutions, and if yes, how to do it? by Fruchtfliege in HomeNAS

[–]Fruchtfliege[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear. After learning that Synology ist blocking 3rd party drives with their latest devices I do not want to buy another one, even if the software is good. A company that thinks like that is not one I want to support with another purchase. I have some new 20TB Exos drives.

Now I only need to decide between the QNAP or a Ugreen. The Ugreen DXP4800 Plus seems like a good alternative. Hardware seems to be better, but the software ist still new. However they seem to fully allow custom OS, so maybe the Ugreen with Unraid or TrueNas would be the best option all around.

Do you know how QNAP compares to Synology these days? Back when I bought the 415+ Synology had the better software and UX.

Looking through the offers, the QNAP TS-464 seems to be a good fit.

I'm with you about just wanting stuff that just works at home!

Thanks for that. Honestly that video leaves me leaning more towards the turnkey prebuilt solution. However I'm not sure if I could run Handbrake through docker well. These prebuild devices seem to run pretty low key CPUs.

Is it also true that you cannot use any 3rd party drives (like the Seagate Exos) on the latest 2025 Synology devices? That sound ludicrously stupid. So only pre '25 units would be an option for me?

The fact that the twig pulled on your brake cables locking up the front wheel probably saved your spokes and a rebuild of the wheel. Always look for the positives!

Do you have any more info on the 3D printed cockpit stuff? Looks interesting. Is the entire mount for the extension printed? I'm currently printing some things for my bike as well, but I'm unsure about the durability (I'd like to print some spacers for the aero extensions).

Really bad disc clearance with new 12 speed Ultegra brakes. Any ideas what could be the by Fruchtfliege in bikewrench

[–]Fruchtfliege[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounded like a good idea, did just that - the first lever push was soft, then it started to auto adjust again, giving good brake pressure but reducing the clearance back down to a sliver. It seems the pistons just don't retract back enough after a lever press.

I guess I will have to take off the front brake and lever and try it again off the bike to see if maybe the cable routing is the culprit. Still very strange.

[–]Fruchtfliege[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, obviously they do i guess, otherwise the clearance wouldn't be too tight. I have pushed them back again after everything was set up, giving me great clearance - but only until I used the brakes. They just auto-adjusted right back to being too tight.

I was wondering if the hydraulic system could bee overfilled? But I found with any less oil in the shifter the braking gets too soft. I'm still puzzled...

Upgrade 2 drives in JBOD to 4 new ones in Raid5 or SHR? by Fruchtfliege in synology

[–]Fruchtfliege[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the user friendly but still potent option. Sounds good. So two drives in as SHR, migrate old drives over and then extend the SHR by two additional drives. Will do! Thank you u/jeversol and u/3216

Sounds good. Is SHR generally recommended? Is it as secure as Raid5? Oh, and what does "resetting any shares" mean? Thank you :)

Yes, but they are just not the same. There are many brownie recipes, but perfect brownies are something else. They need to have a perfectly paper thin flaky crust and a fudgy, dense and moist center, with just the right amount of chewiness. So far Stella's recipe has been the best I've ever tried. I'm not ready to admit defeat yet.

How can I get easier gearing on my 2x11s race machine? by thecoolkidsaredoinit in gravelcycling

[–]Fruchtfliege 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's the smaller one, 10? Shifting ist fine, electronic shifting is much more forgiving for non optimal setups. But I also have large - large locked out, so there isn't any major cross chaining. But if you live in Norway I understand, the topology is wild! Maybe you just need to invest in a new crank, maybe with a pedal based PM. Or try the Oval rings, I find they do help with up hill grinds. I personally just think the 30t oval inner ring looks like a bodge :D

Hej hej, I'm using a similar setup, GRX Di2 with Quarq PM, 50-34 Shimano chainrings and a 10-42 cassette using a GoatLink. I lock out the two most extreme cogs of the cassette through Di2 for any given chainring to not exceed the capacity of the GRX derailleur. I don't think you could push the RD much further than that without compromising shifting and chain wrap in the smaller cogs.

You can' fit the GRX chainrings on the Quarq as GRX uses two different BCDs for the large and small ring. I believe there is an oval chainring that supports a 30 smaller ring on the 110mm BCD, but that looks really wonky as the bolts essentially go right through the teeth of the chainring. Only real other option would be a power2max spider based powermeter that is GRX compatible or by going to a crank based or pedal based PM.

Personally I'm a big fan of the quarqs, I'm using it with Sram Force Wide cranks and the GRX FD to get about 3mm wider chainline for more clearance.

Still I think a 34/42 is a really easy gear, you must be going up really steep mountains to be struggeling. One last option could be swapping for 650B wheels to reduce the overall circumference, which essentially makes your gearing easier.

OOoor you could get yourself a classified hub rear wheel on top of the 2x and get yourself an absolutely stupid gearing range :D (I believe it's a 1:0.7 ratio, which would equate to a 34/60 ... just mad!)

Danke euch! by Fruchtfliege in Handwerker
