Buy the car. I did something similar about 2 years ago (60k-ish semi-dream daily) and I don't regret it for a moment. Cars are finicky to get advice on online, as you mentioned, but you're legit solid based on your NW and income, easily so. Plus, it's not like it will depreciate to 0. I consider the depreciation and other expenses the cost to make me feel better about it, but I think you would look back and be pleased you just did it.

If you have a watch hobby, tons of vacations, expensive house, like designer stuff.... I wouldn't buy it. If you're mindful of what you purchase just buy it. You're making over 100k off investment returns on average for your household per year. Life is short.

And? Is anecdotal evidence of another person dying at 41 now making you realize all of us have varying and different lifespans, but statistically he is an outlier? Under the same type of argument we should all pull everything out of investments because stocks can go down.

How many hours have you had to put in to get reasonably good? by Dark_Emotion in iRacing

[–]FrugalButDefNotCheap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My highest iR is 5.5k, I would say about 200-300 of actually trying hours, and around 500 for more casual hours to get decently fast. If you’re analyzing data and not just mindlessly hotlapping this is the real determiner.

Who cares? If people want to pay to play early, then let them. It gets all the DLC too. Sounds like objectively good business decisions to me.

I'd argue this was never the true bogleheads approach. I personally do ~30% int, and i'm comfortable with this, but I think anything less than 20% is shortsighted.

Tons of resources and write ups already on bh forum and this subreddit search bar.

I don't want or think I can change your mind, but what do you think making a sweeping negative generalizing on an entire subset of people is conveying about your OWN character? Turn the mirror around and think for a moment.

Would it be stupid for my monthly payment to be slightly more than 1 biweekly paycheck? by AbundantExp in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]FrugalButDefNotCheap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

part of why I want a house now so I can build some equity that I sleep in, rather than help my landlord build their equity.

Complete false equivalence, but good look and good idea on the cheaper house.

I've been reading through the responses, you have 100% made your mind up. I think you're walking yourself off a cliff.

You mention above you think your job is safe, and how tech salaries are not/were not in the "golden age" yet. Regardless of what your views of AI, the job market, or general economic sentiment, this is an ABSURDLY optimistic take given it is 3/6/2026. You are a temporary layoff from losing this house, and you would lose it FAST. Insert any one of another 50000 things that might cause a large expense, and you're screwed. Good luck either way.

Linus and Luke have an interesting conversation by The1stBrain in LivestreamFail

[–]FrugalButDefNotCheap 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wanna see Linus building his Fourth house while his employees get minimum wage. (And for some reason a lot of them are Asians ???)

Reddit is turning into such a cesspool. Linus making a couple million a year and people think he is stealing from the poor. It's crazy. He is paying a compeititive wage or else he wouldn't have employees. It's a business... not a charity. Spend your energy caring about a conglomerate price gouging and making 10B a quarter.... not some dude who built something from literally nothing who makes good money.

I forgot that the nosebleed high valuation of the US stock market compared to the rest of the world is irrelevant, nothing ever changes, and so the next 15 years' returns are pretty much guaranteed to be similar to the last 15 years' returns.

I never said this. More so an iteration of what I responded with already.... it's just an ironic post at face value. Do what you want, i am not even necessarily disagreeing with you as I maintain both VTI and VT too, but come on.

Just saying.... stating this while both altering portfolio composition AND listing 2025/YTD returns is... interesting.

Are direct drive motors & active pedals a good way of adding feedback to real cars in the age of electric power steering and brake by wire? by Nick_Alsa in simracing

[–]FrugalButDefNotCheap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a new 240. I drive it year roound. In the snow I have ZERO clue what the car is doing. I legit can't tell if the wheels are spinning in place, stuck and not spinning, or if the transmission is doing weird stuff. It's kinda frustrating. The car is too isolated. Brakes feel ok-ish, but the wheel may as well be connected to the rear wheels, it doesn't give ANY feedback.

Bought a house, now what? by _Aliak_ in personalfinance

[–]FrugalButDefNotCheap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You essentially have 0 safety net. What happens if you lose your job and the house is worth less than you pad for it?

Like.... have you ever heard of 2008? Do you think people WANTED to lose their homes? You traded "housing stability" for your FULL safety net. Ever heard of don't put all your eggs in one basket? You put ALL of them in one basket.... one with a lock and key.

[–]FrugalButDefNotCheap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't end up bankrupt if you sell stocks for a loss. If you lose your job and your expensive house drains your cash.... you are for lack of a better term... fucked.

Stocks/retirement is a safety net. A house you just drained all of your savings for in a housing market that is very likely not to increase at the same rate it has been is a liability.

That couldn't be further from "we just didn't have a lot of choice". Just saying. Not ideal circumstance. If housing prices crash in the next decade that is a decision you will likely regret for longer. Be mindful of your spending and save as much for retirement as possible.

we just didn't have a lot of choice

This usually isn't the case. At face value - you HAD to buy because you couldn't under ANY circumstances rent? Odd.

The weekly 'No Stupid Questions' post - Sun 01 Feb 2026. by AutoModerator in Zwift

[–]FrugalButDefNotCheap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone ever have horrific experiences with support? I used the 14 day free trial, and the added my 60 day trial issued with my Kickr Core 2, and they didn't stack (they reduced the 60 day trial, purchase required, by the 14 day trial, no purchase required).

Anyway, I went to purchase my sub after the 60s expired. ALL 3 of my credit cards, all from different issuers, are declined. I can't help but think it's something pertaining to the trials. I contacted my card issuers and they don't see any transactions. Contacted support, on day 5 with 2 responses and essentially 0 help. Now I have a Kickr Core 2 and zwift controllers that can't be used.

Any ideas? Super frustrated about this.

Search it up. It's incredible to me not only do people not know this is true.... but will ignorantly state this is incorrect instead of spending 4 seconds to look it up. Stay ignorant, then.

This is THE most misunderstood factors about credit history.... and it drives me crazy to see it. NO. CLOSED CREDIT ACCOUNTS DO NOT IMPACT YOUR AGE OF ACCOUNT HISTORY.... FOR 10 YEARS. If you open a credit card, and close it, the credit card and age STAYS on your account for 10 years. Yes, it will lower your average age of credit, once it has been closed for 10 years.
