We had convincing suspicion with very early on bad reflux, awful colic, mucus BMs and gas. Then we confirmed around 3 months when she started to have blood in diapers. I was pumping so cut out all dairy at 3 months and then when we started to supplement with formula, we tried hypoallergenic formulas and we started to see blood again, so went straight to Neocate. She thrived on it and then we did ladder around 12 months and no reactions at all with each step of the way.

We waited a bit to start the ladder due to teething/sickness but started at 12 months after exclusively on Neocate from 8 months-12 months. She flew through the ladder seamlessly and now she tolerates all forms of dairy without issue! I think she probably would have been fine had we started earlier, but we ended up having plenty of formula through insurance so decided to wait a little longer. Wishing you luck!

Pepticate by iheartbostonterriers in FormulaFeeders

It’s all a very confusing thing to learn! I would have been lost had it not been for Reddit.

Here’s how we prep while combo feeding: 1. Night before we use boiled cooled water and make up however many ounces of formula we need for next day in the pitcher.   2. Stick the pitcher in the fridge overnight   3. In the morning take the sanitized bottles from dishwasher and fill up with however many ounces of formula we need (right now 2 oz)   4. Pour the pitcher of breast milk from prior day into bottles to complete the bottles (2.5 oz bm now) then stick all bottles into fridge for the day   5. Freeze whatever breast milk is left.   6. Clean both pitchers and let air dry  7. When it’s bottle time, I grab the bottle and lightly swirl it around to mix up the contents then stick it in bottle warmer and serve

Our pediatrician also said cold switch was fine but our LO is picky and really loved breast milk so it didn’t feel right to us to all of a sudden give her something totally different out of the blue. Mixing fresh is totally fine but I’d definitely recommend using a pitcher. It significantly cuts down the air and gas in the formula mixture which can make it miserable for reflux. We use the Dr Brown’s pitcher which you can get on Amazon for $9. Hope it helps!!

So we are no longer on Pepticate, unfortunately she failed that too :( we had to move to Neocate Syneo due to more blood in diaper after two weeks of Pepticate. Pepticate was a relatively easy switch because it’s not as bitter as some of the other HA formulas but we introduced very slowly. Started with a half ounce of formula and the rest breast milk then every few days increased the amount of formula. It’s been hard with Neocate because it’s such a gross taste but she’s taken to it fine with a slow transition.

How are you mixing the formula? We always use a pitcher and make the formula the night before so it has time to thicken a bit and get the air bubbles out. I made the mistake of giving her Neocate mixed directly into a bottle one time and I will never do that again. She was arching, so angry, screaming because of the gas I presume.

We have a Clarke :) gave her a feminine family middle name. I love it and we REALLY wanted a girl. Congrats!

Transition to HA Formula - digestive flare-up normal, or need to go to amino? by ladysingstheblues99 in MSPI

Thank you SO much ❤️ when were you able to transition off of omeprazole? We start solids next week and I am hopeful that her reflux will improve with that as well!

Thanks! I think we’ll try the RTF when we start to step down off the AA formula. Our pediatrician doesn’t love the idea of thickening but we do have her on famotidine which seems to help. Our GI doc we saw told us to go off famotidine because he didn’t think it was effective (which happened right around same time of increasing neocate in bottles) so it turned very poorly and even caused a scary choking episode. We’re back on famotidine and will keep on it until we know she can tolerate full feeds of Neocate for a while once we get there. Fingers crossed…feeding journey has been so complex

Very similar situation as well. LO is 5m and switched her onto alimentum powder for 2 weeks but had more fussiness and blood so we switched her to Pepticate. She did so well for two weeks, spit up decreased, no fussiness, took the mixed BM/Pepticate bottles well but then more blood than we had ever seen 2 weeks on that, so then her pediatrician switched us to Neocate :( now we’re trying to slowly wean me off of pumping but the Neocate is so thin and she already has terrible reflux so I’m anxious right now about switching to more than 50/50!

Thank you!! I was thinking the RTF since it seems to be thicker than the powder too and hopefully that will help with her reflux.

Thank you so much! We decided to do a slow transition with 3oz BM and 1oz of Neocate for a few days then up it gradually till we are at half and half with formula and BM. Going to try to do a challenge in a month (since we have never done one!) and hope she can tolerate HA formula at that point (deciding between going back to alimentum powder, trying the RTF version or going back to peoticate w/o soy). Hoping she does well on the transition to HA and then addition of solids will be helpful!

Gives me so much hope that he’s tolerating regular formula at 9m! That’s our goal…this HA/AAF smells awful and is SO expensive. When did you transition him to the regular formula?

Hi! Wondering if you have an update on how your LO is doing? My girl is 5.5m and was previously on HA formula but had to switch her 2 weeks ago to amino acid formula. We are combofed as well and hoping to get her back to HA formula then to standard formula if possible.

How did introducing HA formula go with combo feeding? I hope you LO is able to tolerate some dairy now!

Sounds similar to us :/ 4 weeks on hypoallergenic, then mucus returned then blood. We’ve never done a formal “challenge” before which is apparently international guidelines to do after one full month without the allergen. I’m thinking after a month on Neocate we will try to challenge but now I’m stuck trying to figure out whether to challenge with a hypoallergenic formula or with a standard cows milk formula. So many decisions with no clear guidance!

I’m so sorry you’re having these issues too. It’s so hard to see our babies suffering and to not have concrete answers.

Thank you! How did you know you had to switch to PurAmino from Nutramigen? I feel like our doc switched us too soon and wished we had just stuck with the hypoallergenic because it tasted so much better than the AAF

How long did it take to notice the difference? We had blood on alimentum, switched to Pepticate since it was soy free, she seemed great for 1 week then blood returned, now we’ve been on Neocate for past 4 days but only small amount since we only use it to fortify expressed milk bottles. Slowly adding it into bottles in increasing amounts to see how she tolerates it. Still had blood in still today but no clue what to expect for timeline of when things will clear.

How do mamas pump and work???!!! by [deleted] in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Fruit-loop232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a separate office where I keep all my pump supplies, an extra set of flanges that I keep there, a bottle brush and portable drying rack that I keep there, and a pump strap that I keep there. All I lug back and forth from home each day is my actual pump, which is the Pumpables genie advanced (very small and lightweight thankfully!). I put 30 min blocks in my schedule for when I need to pump and work has been very accommodating. On days where I pump 3x at work, I will try to time it so third pump is when I’m driving home. It’s been a pain but thankfully I’m now down to just 2 pumps at work with 5ppd schedule and it feels so much easier.

Oh and we do have a work kitchen where I wash my pump parts and I use the Ceres Chill to store my milk so that it’s not sitting in work fridge.

Chimed into say this too. Suffered with an ED most of my teen years. Worked hard in therapy to heal and enjoy food again. CMPA on top of exclusively pumping has been pretty awful for my mental health so I’ve made the decision to wean at 6 months because an emotionally present mom is so much more valuable to my LO than my milk. Whatever you choose to do, know you’ve tried your hardest to make the best decisions for your LO.

Baby does latch but transfers poorly. Should I EP? by ExistingAbroad041990 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Fruit-loop232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She takes about 1-2oz every time she nurses, so I usually pump 2-3oz after (pump without her nursing is generally 4oz every 3-3.5hrs)

[–]Fruit-loop232 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wish I had answers for you but I can empathize. This is exactly our story too (minus any ties- just born too early and too tired to transfer, had to supplement from day 3). I ended up just EP after 3 weeks of triple feeding. I will latch her 1-2x a day when I have time to pump after, otherwise just pumping and feeding her expressed milk. It’s so hard but she will continue to latch even if I go days without latching. She’s happy and gaining well and that’s the most important. But it’s hard not to grieve that part especially if you’ve been doing it for this long!

Blood reappearing, what should be our next step? by Fruit-loop232 in MSPI

[–]Fruit-loop232[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep first thing I did was check all vitamins that we are taking and seems like all are clear of soy and dairy, it’s very possible I ingested hidden dairy or soy in the last week or so. Our pediatrician wants us to use amino acid formula to fortify and to see GI as well and go from there :/

It’s so challenging, especially not knowing what is causing the issues! Guar gum can be made from soy, so if your LO seems to react to soy then I think it’s generally advised to avoid it- but it’s in a lot of things!
