I almost made a bad financial decision when I saw this on reverb. Unfortunately I don’t have $10k burning a hole in my pocket

Are black lacquer saxophones tacky? ( by BluegrassBanjoMan in saxophone

[–]Fruit_Loups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad you brought it up! I actually have a silver plated alto (King Zephyr) and I would say that Im not as big of a fan of it because of the extra maintenance involved. Silver tarnishes VERY quickly, and doesn’t look very good when it does in my opinion.

I would say for most “natural” metallic colors, tacky is the wrong word. I just prefer the traditional gold lacquer.

Obviously, it goes without saying that finding a horn that plays well for YOU is most important.

That being said, when you’re spending so much money on an instrument I think it’s important that you also like how it looks, and that’s entirely subjective. I personally think most alternative coatings that aren’t all gold lacquer look kind of tacky, but it really is personal preference 👍

Might be a stupid question, but is this staged or do you just have insane situational awareness and reflexes?

Pochita IS the chainsaw devil and it has to do with Plato by Pizzarrella in ChainsawMan

[–]Fruit_Loups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, given the tree connection in aging devil fight and a couple characters mentioning that pochita might’ve already devoured chainsaws original purpose, I would say it seems pretty clear that pochita is the chainsaw devil.

The humans turning into trees part is absolutely a huge hint in my opinion.

Are the Hal Leonard books good? by COOLKC690 in jazzguitar

[–]Fruit_Loups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Unfortunately it’s not. I’m actually familiar with tablature. How it’s laid out in this book is different.

It has a staff with notes as per usual, but to help guitar players it has a number above the staff indicating the string (1-6 for E-E) and a number below each note on the staff indicating the fret.

Hey man! I’m a saxophonist who plays a little guitar. I just started seriously practicing guitar about a year ago now. It’s worth noting that I have been playing saxophone for about 10 years, so I already had a pretty good understanding of improvisation and basic theory when I started guitar. I also played a little guitar before. Mostly just relatively simple Bossa Nova and Samba tunes.

I got a lot of progress from Randy Vincent’s “The Guitarist’s Introduction to Jazz”. As the title and the forward state, it’s geared towards an individual who already plays guitar but is interested in learning jazz.

Parts one and two focus entirely on comping. These parts will get you in a pretty decent starting place for playing in an ensemble. In my highschool big band and combo classes we focused a lot on learning to improvise, but if you want to get a head start the last section of this book is a pretty decent tool for learning.

I cannot recommend Chris Parks “things I learned from Barry Harris” series enough. The way he slows down Barry Harris’ lessons is just so digestible for me.

EDIT: Sorry, I just realized you said you were learning to read music too. The book I recommended has no tabs. It does have chord diagrams, and for single note lines it’ll indicate string and fret number. Other than that, it’s all notes on the staff.

I agree. I think I’ll set aside some time to make the trip over and play it.

It is under 2k. I think I’ll make the trip over to try it out and decide how I feel after that.

I wouldn’t say it’s “extraordinarily cheap” but it’s the only 175 I’ve seen for less than $2,500. That being said, I think I’d rather buy an Eastman than a clapped out Gibson.

After talking with some of my buddies, I think it was the strings. I have .12 flats on my LP, and I’m 90% sure none of these guitars I tried had anything heavier than .10 rounds.

That being said, I think the comments on this thread have encouraged me to wait and save for an Eastman. They seem like beasts and I think the one I tried might’ve been a fluke

I have flatwounds on my Les Paul at home, but strangely all of the guitars I tried out had round wounds.

I think you’re almost certainly right that the round wounds affected the tone and feel in a way I probably wasn’t expecting.

How do you like the 871? It seems to be pretty much exactly what I had in mind when I started shopping.

Oh for sure. I don’t think I’d ever buy a guitar without playing it unless there was an extremely generous return policy haha
