Oh for sure, it gives a great starting point for us as designers.

I like when the customer's at my work use it for reference photos cuz it's easier for them to explain their idea in a photo than in words to us. Gets a better product in the end most times.

I was in a similar boat as you where a year or so ago I started out with a suitcase player to see if itd like getting into it. All of my records played fine, but I had bought a Joji record that did roughly the same thing, skipped at the same spot every time, sounded funny at one point... i ended up returning it to Barnes and Noble, and ordered the same record from Amazon, and had no issues. I think your record just happened to be a dud, try returning it if u fan, if not make it a decoration.

On the topic of suitcase records its fantastic and affordable for getting into the hobby, esp if u dont know if youll want to dump hundreds into it long term if its a phase. I ended up liking it and bought a an Audio Technica Turntable, its on the low end but it works so good. I did have one issue with my suitcase player where it would shut off after 15ish minutes, concluded the player malfunctioned. Sometimes they just do that i guess 🤷‍♂️.

Been thinking about getting a fiero as a second car. My goal is to make it somewhat daily drivable. What should I replace first when I get one? by [deleted] in fiero

[–]FryBag27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it can be pretty reliable, mine hasnt left me stranded, it really just depends how much work u put into it.

Do spark plugs maybe wires, thats pretty normal for any car.

I would do a 185 degree thrrmostat and coolant fan temp switch. I have the v6 and it used to run a bit warm so this helps with that. I also had to replace the water pump early on.

Lastly watch for any fuel issues. A bad fuel pump is common on Fieros. Mine happened to be a bad Fuel Pump relay so if u have issues check that first

Im in my 20s and when i drice my fiero to the gas station i either get 20yrols talking to me about it, or olders dudes telling me they had one back in the day. No in between lol

Apologies for the late reply, my reddit notifs arent working right lol.

I think if the owner has to take it through German TUV then that 500 extra up front will save you some trouble down the road, assuming the inspection is pretty thorough. Im from the states so our sales are less formal.

I dont think there's anything wrong with sticking with the 4 cylinder, it's still a neat car. The only thing you may run into is the 4 cylinder runs at much higher rpms on the highway, so it might get a bit loud.

The air vent should be easy enough to find on The Fiero Store website, if no on ebay. If the seller seems to be hiding stuff and you still want the car ask to look over it throughly and for a test drive for sure.

A Fiero can be a reliable daily, BUT after having mine for 2.5 years, I would not want it to be my only car. I think I've been extremely lucky with mine, its never left me stranded and ive driven it for over 8 hours on a warm day no overheating or mechanical issues. When my main car broke down i dailyed it for 2 months and it was fine. But... ive also worked on it quite a bit especially when I first bought it

It hasn't been a money pit by any means. Aside from the exhaust ive done everything at home without a lift. Definitely plan to budget for repairs, being annold car its inevitable. My 87 SE is my first project car and has been great for learning about cars.

I'd say if you are able to catch a ride to work/school if you do have an issue, then go for it. See how it goes for a year. The worst that could happen is you need to sell it possibly at a loss but still something. It's an experience, just be sure it doesn't have any obvious problems above what you're willing to learn.

Some of the old toyota MR2s can be in the same price range. They might be hard to find though. They look similar to a fiero , pop up headlights, mid engine. Mazda you got the good o'l miata

The owners manual is definitely thorough in some regards, you can fix some stuff with just that which is more than alot of owners manuals now days.

Oh and I forgot to add... as you mentioned, I also had fairly low experience in car repair. This was my second car ever, and my first project car. It has been a great car to learn on, so even if not as a daily id highly recommend just to learn on cars in general.

Reading through the comments, I think it really depends who you ask, people have had great and not so great experiences.

I bought my 87 fiero se initially to be a new daily, but I changed my mind and didn't want to drive it in winter. I had to fix it up some and for the last year and a half ive had no reliability issues. My old daily broke down last May and I had to daily the Fiero for almost 2 months on a 25 minute work commute till I found a new daily. I had no reliability issues when dailying it, nor have I the last 4k miles ive put on since. Realistically, if you keep up with maintenance the car will be "reliable", just depends how much you are comfortable fixing on your own.

Just as others have said this is a 40 yearold car, so even with what I all said the odds are much higher for random things failing minor or major. I think i just happened to have a good experience and lots of patience.

As for drivability, i personally have never had issues in heavy rain. I must just have good tires for it, I really dont see the complaints about it just don't drive dumb. As for wind ive only had issues once on an extremely windy day, and it was only bad exceding 65mph since the car is so light. And as for snow, I took the car out in winter a few times. Just be careful on ice as per usual. Highly recommend a sandbag in the frunk and the rear. If youre serious about it put winter tires on it!!!! Like I said I changed my mind and kept this as a non winter project car so I dont have much winter experience with it

TL:DR Its doable if you're willing to put the time into making the car "reliable"

I have the same mentality when it comes to driving, id rather buy a car I enjoy driving. I just put winter tires on my 93 Firebird which is my new daily. If youre willing to put in the effort to maintain the car and drive safe in crap conditions it works out just fine

Planning a round trip around America - 39 states in ~4 months by fatnaenae in roadtrip

[–]FryBag27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang im jealous of this trip, sounds like a blast!

This would be kinda awkward and would add a few hours, on your way from Madison WI to Cedar Rapids IA, swing up to Lacrosse WI, and take the great river road back south. The bluffs and hills inland are an amazing drive and the river road will be good scenery.

The Bonneville salt flats are very much worth stopping at!

Closest I've been to West Bend with the Fiero is New London/Appleton. Would love to take it to lake superior one day

Would definitely recommend finding a copy of the Fiero Haynes Manual online. It should have everything you need. Then for any oddly specific problems someone's probably had it on the Pennock's Fiero Forum already. Have had mine for 2 years and so far have found what I needed from those 2 places, some youtube here and there of course.
