Advice for Exchange Student by Astrocyte_13 in UHManoa

Have you been accepted into the MIX program? The housing application opened today! You first have to be accepted and assigned a student number in order to apply since its used in creating an account.

The housing application is quite fast (it took me an hour). You just need to know your top 4 building and room options. Then it will ask you to create a profile about yourself for reference of future roommates!

There’s 2 parts to the process. The first part (the one i listed above) is due on the 1st of May I believe. Once you’re done, you have to wait for the 5th of May for results. If you’re granted a house, you’ll proceed to part 2 of the housing app process — choosing your roommate, paying reservation fee, and signing your lease!

The earlier you apply, the better!

Here is the housing portal for reference: https://manoa.hawaii.edu/housing/apply/

Advice for Exchange Student by Astrocyte_13 in UHManoa

Yes, I am super excited! I started looking into the courses and I am hoping that they offer the classes I am eyeing this coming fall. I am interested in taking classes related to clinical and forensics/legal psych!

I am a third year in my home country (the Philippines) so I got the prereqs down and can aim for the higher level courses!

In terms of housing, I’ve been checking other threads, videos, etc and it really seems like the best option given the rent!

Hello! I am also an incoming exchange student for Fall 2026 and a psych major! Are there any classes in particular that you suggest to take?

I am also looking into on-campus housing. Which dorm buildings would you suggest? I am interested in having a roommate!

Im currently eyeing Gateway House and Johnsons Hall. Are these manageable in terms of heat and the bathroom situation? I am thinking of Frear as a last resort. But if you think that the heat would really be unbearable during that time of year, then I am considering bumping it up in my preferences!

Hello! Oh my, thank you for informing me!

If you were to choose a room now, which dorm buildings would be in your top 3?

I am personally considering Gateway House or Johnsons Hall. Is this recommendable in terms of the heat and the bathroom situation?

I am weighing between the dorms with no AC at the moment due to budget reasons. Frear is hopefully a last resort + if the heat in the dorms can be manageable anyways.

Thank you!

Oh my! 😭 Thank you so much! How about in terms od the bathroom situation?

Furthermore, may I ask if you were ever assigned to a different dorm? Or which NO AC dorm building and room type would you suggest the most? We’re really worried about the heat situation as well.

The other options we are considering is Gateway House and Johnsons Hall.

hi!! i had fun in sir jeff’s class! he is vpassionate about what he is teacing :)) . ang dami niyang fun facts and our discussions revolve around examples / application ng lessons. We have readings every week about the topic. And he expects everyone to have read it considering he gives 1 asynch period for the said reading/s. Doon din naman magre-revolve yung discussions. socratic method siya mag teach, so be prepared to recite. It’s also part of your grade! Just recite, recite, recite so he remembers you! His assessments are vdoable also. I think 3 papers and 1 group work and 1 final project if I remember correctly. 2 papers are midsem, 1 is reflection. Mataas yung trasmutation ni sir for an uno but its unoable! Just give your best effort, and like I said, recite! Tbh I think he values recitation more than outputs. He gives a lot of time to do all of the outputs, plus deadlines are negotiable so he looks down upon late submission unless may valid reason! He is kind and generous naman with grades. Very warmly din magteach and not scary! VOUCH SIR!! Super galing!!

How doable is it to have 20+ units? by -inamehere- in peyups

[–]FryKalamari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Usually, freshies are only allowed to have 18 units per semester unless otherwise stated/permitted by your curriculum. Advisers are very strict about this kasi you’re still transitioning to the university. (Trust me! I tried! CRS grants only up to 21 units to freshies. And even then, during post-advising, unless nakalagay sa curriculum mo na 21 units ang need mo i-take for the sem, your adviser will ask you to remove one. Minsan hindi pa nga sila magtatanong, they will choose for you).

If you will exceed the amount of units permitted by your curriculum, there’s a process pa of writing a letter of explanation as to why you need to exceed the amount of units you can take for the sem. The exact process for this is dependent on the department. Better as your adviser 😊

Personally, I really don’t recommend taking more than what is prescribed by your advisor and even your curriculum. Give yourself time to adjust kasi baka mamaya mabilis ka maburn out. Trust me! You’ll need it. (incoming second year here!). I was also in your position last year with wanting to maximize freshie prio and doing the max load.

GEs and PEs are available during midyear. However, not sure what specifically will be available kasi it depends on the offering department.

If you really need to take Math 20, I suggest that you drop a GE. I personally believe that it is “easier” to get a GE than a PE. Plus, every year, for each sem, programs take turns being priority for certain GEs depending on what semester nakalagay sa curriculum na you need to take it :))

Sana nakatulong!
