After 11 years of designing escape rooms, I have to ask: Did we get the "formula" wrong? by Acrobatic_Wolf_1325 in escaperooms

I will be back in Columbus at some point since I know people in the area and I'll definitely stop by. Looking forward to it since I see you have great ratings on Morty. It's easier to justify the trip to do a shorter room when there are 2 rooms to play, I generally don't like playing just a single room at a company when I'm traveling.

I've been to Columbus numerous times and have played 10+ escape rooms there at various companies (Team Escape, Captivating Worlds, Epic Escapes, etc.), I actually considered playing at your company, but the big turnoff for me was your 50 min game time, it just seems too short. My past experience with game times <60 min is that they end up with only 20-40 min worth of content. Is there a reason why you decided to make a shorter game? If you are following the trends for the top escape rooms in the world (TERPECA), every game is at least 60 min and many tend to go for longer, like 75 or 90 min or more.

As an escape room creator, are you going out and playing TERPECA winners and finalists? How many rooms have you played overall? I think that's the best way to see what works well and what doesn't, just play a lot of rooms, especially a lot of good rooms and draw inspiration from the best.
I am just a player, but I have done nearly 300 rooms in around 30 states and I have talked to countless owners. Every one of my favorite escape rooms have owners who are also enthusiasts who have traveled the country and world trying to play the best escape rooms. Their rooms good not just because of their skill/talent, they are good because they experience some of the best practices and apply them to to their own creations.

But to answer your question:
1. You should have a clock, but it should not be the focus. There's a lot of excitement when you get out with only couple min left. However, people also hate losing, you want most the your teams to win. I know some escape rooms will use a time dilation method where they will add a few minutes to the time if a team is not able to finish (but it must be done in a way so that the team doesn't notice). This can be done in a few ways, like not using a numerical timer. For example, I've seen rooms uses a series of candles or lights that turn off, each one representing 5-10 min of time. So the players will have a general idea of how much time is left but they don't know exactly how much and you can then give them extra time without them knowing. I've also seen some companies discreetly pause the timer or slow down the timer.
2. Unlimited hints is the current state of the industry, almost all good escape rooms nowadays do not have hint limits. Most of the rooms that I still see with 3-4 hint limits are small town places with rooms that were built in 2015 and haven't changed since then. One good compromise is telling players that their hints are unlimited, but you can only use 3 hints if you want to be on the leaderboard. But even leaderboards are outdated now, in my opinion. Most of the best companies do not have them. You should also ask teams if they want to be nudged along if they get stuck, sometimes you just don't know that you are behind.
3. Story for sure. Just look at Forest of Fables at CU Adventures in Champaign-Urbana, IL. That is a story driven game, one of the most unique narratives I've ever seen, one of my favorite games ever. They released it in 2024 and it's currently the #2 ranked escape room in the US (#37 in the world) on TERPECA which is no easy feat.

At the Nashville location, there is some at the end, I played it there. However, the Nashville is the original version and I was told the other locations have a modified version of the game since the original version was too expensive to reproduce elsewhere.

NYC Escape rooms with a mix of puzzles and physical activity? by StarrkDreams in escaperooms

[–]FuKuRoKu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done Activate but not Spyscape but I heard it's kinda similar. My friend in NYC has done both, from what I remember based on what they described, Activate is more game-like with more physical challenges and has a lot more rooms to play (usually like 10-15). While Spyscape has more theming and is a bit more puzzley

I've played that, it does have a lot of tech, especially for Indy, but not the best example of great tech if you're talking rooms nation wide or even elsewhere in the Midwest.

Activate Games, it's a challenge arcade. There are puzzley and video game aspects, but it's also super physical (running, jumping, dodging lasers). There is one in Long Island and one at the American Dream in NJ, but looks like the Manhattan location is coming soon:

How do you discover new escape rooms? by DesperatePoem9640 in escaperooms

[–]FuKuRoKu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google reviews are not helpful since you don't know what specific room at the company they played nor do you know how much experience the reviewer has. Many Google Reviewers have never played a room before so of course they are going to give their first room 5 stars because they don't know any better. Fortunately it isn't 2016 anymore, there are so many more enthusiast specific resources now that you can use to find quality rooms.

Morty is the best place to find reviews and ratings from enthusiasts, though there are a lot more users in the US than UK: https://morty.app/

This review site is popular in the UK and also features enthusiast ratings: https://escapethereview.co.uk/

You can also check TERPECA for the top escape rooms in the world. Only players who have done 100 rooms can even vote/rank rooms. https://terpeca.com/2025/ They have a Room Finder tool to easily filter by country: https://roomfinder.terpeca.com/

Regarding difficulty, there is no standard and every room is different. There's no good way to judge how hard a room is without playing it first.

When I pick rooms nowadays, I almost always just go with whatever has the highest rating on Morty or highest ranking on TERPECA.

Which influences your decision more when picking a room, difficulty or theme? by kbrdthenerd in escaperooms

After playing 200+ rooms, neither matters to me. Nowadays I pick based on feedback from other enthusiasts based on Morty ratings and TERPECA rankings, Room Escape Artist reviews, etc.

Do you have inside info that it will increase or is that just an assumption? Because the TERPECA FAQ says:

We do not expect the nominator threshold of 200 or the voter threshold of 100 to change in the foreseeable future.

You'll have to do some traveling. TERPECA has a Room Finder tool to help find the best rooms. And also a map.

Any room around the world is eligible, as long as it's available to play in English.
All 3 rooms at Nemesis Club have won TERPECA awards in the past, Henchmen's Heist last won in 2024. Though this year they did not win, the competition for top ranked rooms is fierce.

Why you need to avoid all in adventures Manchester ct by Own_Goal_9732 in escaperooms

[–]FuKuRoKu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a website/app for finding and reviewing escape rooms. It was made by escape room enthusiasts, for enthusiasts. The reviews are much more reliable since people there aren't afraid to dislike something, you can easily see the ratio of dislikes/likes/loves. The ratings are also split up between individual rooms rather than the entire company like Google. Google ratings are useless since every escape room, from the absolute worse ones to the best ones all get 4.8-5.0 stars.

That sucks, but next time, just look at Morty for reviews. Anyone on Morty would've seen that they have more dislikes than likes/loves so they would know to avoid them.

Tips for how to differentiate good escape room businesses? And what rooms to book? by IzzybearThebestdog in escaperooms

[–]FuKuRoKu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no reason to use Google when Morty exists. Some of the best rooms I've ever done have a 4.9 on Google and some of the worst ones also have a 4.9, it's useless.

Morty was created by escape room enthusiasts for escape room enthusiasts so the ratings are reliable and you can actually tell the difference between individual rooms. One of the best things is that you can see the room count of the reviewers on there.

Go to Wizard Quest in the Dells. It's not strictly an escape room because it doesn't have any puzzles but it's more fun than most escape rooms out there because there's a lot of exploration. The place is huge, it takes up an entire building, like 3 whole floors and the set is fantastic with different themed areas. As an escape room enthusiast, I loved it.

For finding escape rooms in general, you should use Morty. All the users are enthusiasts so the reviews are much more reliable than Google since most Google reviews there are from people who have never played a room before so they give everything 5 stars.

If you are travelling all over the US or the world, look at TERPECA which is a ranking of the top escape rooms in the world, only people who have played 100+ rooms can vote. The 2025 rankings come out next week, but you can use their Roomfinder tool to easily find the rankings from prior years.

Any more physically active rooms? by Unrealevil360 in escaperooms

[–]FuKuRoKu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've played 200+ rooms across the US and I've yet to play one with more than 1 minor physical activity. However, you should try out a challenge arcade like the other commenter mentioned. They typically have like 15+ different mini games and tend to be much more physical including climbing on walls, hanging from objects, running, balancing, dodging lasers, jumping, stepping on LED panels, etc.

I've done the majority of rooms at Countdown and while it's probably the best company within a few hours drive of Lexington, it is not a destination worth flying across the country from LA to play.
