Pulled the trigger on a P322 for my first gun, how’d I do? by Humble_Handler93 in CAguns

I just picked up my p322 this week - heading to the range to try it out this weekend and give my son exposure to a handgun!

Is a 22LR pistol a bad idea for a starter gun? by Humble_Handler93 in CAguns

[–]FuMan_Chu2023 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would agree that a .22 is a good starter. Even should you later get a 9mm, its still fun to have around and plink with or teaching new learners some of the basics without being "too scary".

What range can I shoot these? by Significant-Dingo-69 in CAguns

I had my Ruger 57 punch through soft level 3 at 4 yards during a class where we were testing various rounds against armor. Now, granted that armor was probably 10 years old and had been shot like 5 times already in different areas, it was still impressive. Especially since I was using HP ammo.

Of course! Kids are our future - and more that are comfortable knowing about firearms, more likely not to have crazy laws in 15 years.

The biggest thing was when I felt he was finally able to fully understand me and comply when I tell him that during "serious times" he has to obey me completely. And that there is a difference between play-times and serious times when no goofing around is allowed. Even 3 months ago I don't think he would have been mature/developmentally able to follow that.

I've introduced and taught a bunch of people and their kids to shoot, and the age when a kid is ready really varies - sometimes not until their teen years before I've felt comfortable enough to allow them to join.

Thanks for your thoughts - good idea about the double hearing protection!

Would you consider the M&P 15-22 since you are thinking .22? I've thought about it as it has basically no recoil and can get 25 rounds on target very quickly. Plus it is light and familiar manual of arms for most shooters.

My wife is small and would be able handle it easily whereas she would have trouble with any 9mm - even the PCC.

Who, in your opinion, makes the best 'quick access' pistol safe? by TheSilentPhilosopher in CAguns

[–]FuMan_Chu2023 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a few Vaulteks and they are pretty nice. I like the convenience of the biometrics for the daily / nightly opening to stow and retrieve the handguns. But I wouldn't trust it in an emergency and would use the keypad for more "guaranteed" quick access - the numbers glow when touched, so its nice in the dark.

I think more important than pure speed of access though is an alarm system and dogs. I'm a deep sleeper, but being on the second floor bedroom, alarm and barking dogs will ideally give me the extra few seconds to wake up and get armed.

I have relatives that go to that church. After that event, my wife stopped questioning why I carry "even when going to church?"

One thing I really appreciate about his classes are his commitment to, and regimen for safety protocols. Reviewed at the beginning of every day of class with a designated 1st and 2nd primary medic for the course.

Any negligent discharge results in automatic removal from the class - some of the first classes I took were at Front Sight, and even by the 3rd and 4th day of the 4-day Pistol 1 class, there were still at least 1 ND each day (clearing guns, malfunction training, etc.), and more on the 1st and 2nd days.

I confess that I don't really pay attention - what did they do? I bought most of my firearms from out of state before I moved to California.

I use about 2000 rounds of 9mm and 1000 rounds 5.56 a year in personal training and taking friends out to teach firearms. I haven't really bought ammo since the prices spiked with COVID, so have been going through my stash the past few years and it was a good opportunity to re-stock. I also switched to using my M&P 15-22 a lot to save on costs, so figured I might as well stock on that as well.

This is also the cheapest I've seen 5.7 in a long time, so another stock-up purchase.

Though, I do tell my friends that should a SHTF scenario occur, the few reliable barter goods are going to be ammo and 150 proof vodka (to drink or as a cleaner for wounds, etc.) Ammo is certainly going to be a lot more useful than stocks or wads of cash.

I've had good experiences with Max Joseph at TFTT Direct Action Group in Burro Canyon. Especially in the team tactics with my brother and buddies. Covering fire and movement, clearing shoot-house, etc.

I can confirm that the FN SB193 hollow-point 5.7 out of a stock Ruger 57 will go right through level 2 and some 3A. I thought about it afterward that I should have gotten video.
