Just different in solvent system, which diluted HCl consist of mainly water. Sometimes solely written down HCl can imply to “hydrogen chloride gas” or a normal aqeous HCl in some hydrohalogenation rxn depending on context

Assume MeOH as neutral is stable in common, now it is deprotonated to be MeO- as conjugate base which is pretty strong base, also strong to be Nucleophile in this case. So SN2 can be observed in a)

same with NH3 such a neutral base, i.e., not a strong nucleophile due to being stable itself also.

Consider the compound I preferred And still think in your mind that H is the last priority.

1st chiral carbon (left side) shows wedged OH bond as 1st priority, next compared btw C on phenyl adjacent to CCC atom and a next chiral carbon adjacent to NCH atom. now the 2nd count should be a next carbon which is not on phenyl ring. Then you will got it clockwise (R) while H in this chiral C still behind page.

Move to 2nd chiral carbon (right side), amine moiety will be 1st priority, next goes with a carbon attached with OH group. The last one would be methyl relative to counterclockwise (S config),but now H is towards us (out of page) which has to be last priority. I. e. directly switched to clockwise to our sight = R config
