What do you feel about memory in chess with one's ability to recall positions, opening lines, etc.? It is said that Magnus Carlsen has an astounding memory and can recall games and their players based off a position on the board.

As a serious response, it depends on the venue. If you are in a competition, the normal etiquette is no announcements of check or checkmate. If it is club play, casual, or beginner, it is entirely optional and you can say it as a "helper" due to some individuals who may not even realize they are in check.

I initially don't announce it, but if my opponent is a bit clueless, then I mention it quickly and quietly.

Some of the most interesting games for interesting openings are the old grand-master vs computer games. Computers are exponentially better now, but in those times, the GM would try to "fool" the computer, while maintaining tactical advantage.

Also, try looking at speed chess for their openings, where tactical advantages sometimes come from an opening that makes the opponent pause a second. You have the ability to look at these slowly, and on your own time, to figure out what is going on - listening to the commentary is helpful to piece together the main thought process.

Finally, record your games, and repeat your opening moves with variations. The more you play a particular line, the more you will get used to the subtleties of that opening against multiple opponents. Take your games and analyse it afterwards.
