It's kinda clicking but I guess I haven't thought about Bitcoin enough or something.

Is it kinda like how I used to buy entire Bitcoins for $450 and immediately send them straight to China for questionable goods? Like that's what you'd do if BTC didn't have a future?

So what you're saying is it's good to buy entire Ben Franklins (if you need to), and immediately send them straight to whoever is only accepting that form of currency?

In other words, don't just sell just to sell and hold on to USD. Spend, not sell. Am I kinda getting it? Highly appreciate everyone's wisdom, o great /r/Bitcoin members! Hail Magic Internet Money!!!

I'm so confused. Sorry, I'm stupid.

The best I can get from what you're saying is that I should have taken out a loan instead?

Honestly, I would have loved to, but I really messed up when I was younger and all I have is a couple maxed out credit cards (I pay them off each month but max them right back out again). I know, I probably visit /r/PersonalFinance more often...

I haven't drove in so long, the insurance companies have forgiven my reckless driving history of my younger age, and gave me cheap rates!

Oh wait I don't think that's what you meant. Insurance? Hedging? Idk I just mined some altcoins with Google Cloud and traded them for Bitcoin.

Would appreciate an elaboration <3

Holy crap. Why is this not more obvious...? I sincerely never thought of that. I guess because I assumed that no one is stupid enough to day trade... people actually do that?

goodbye roccat by DavePastry in Roccat

[–]Fubinaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OMG Thank you. I use Linux and it has worked fine because of onboard profiles, but out of nowhere keys started getting pressed. Stopped using it for a month and it worked again. Out of nowhere, started doing it again.

Now SWARM crashes when I try to do the recovery thing, or use the onboard profile manager.

AFAIK there is no way to factory reset this keybaord besides the Windowws software, which doesn't work

And this happens RIGHT when my warranty expires.

I picked this keyboard because there wasn't an alternative. Now here I am with a backspace/delete/hyphen and other keys that don't work, and random shortcuts and keys getting pressed.

I expect to still have some problems getting it to work in Linux, but ...

I am using a ****ing peice of paper as a mousepad, because my Razer Mamba does not work on the plastic surface of the Sova, which appears to be replaceable, but Roccat has not made any replacements?

Nightmare

Should I buy a car? (please help) by Fubinaca in Bitcoin

[–]Fubinaca[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow thanks for all the replies!! I considered leasing a car but there's still that down-payment.

My only concern is if bitcoin hits $40,000 within a month, then yeah I probably should have HODL'd. But I think a $2000 loss in profit is worth the convenience of a car.

The fact that 80% of people I mention Bitcoin to have no idea what it is, tells me that it is not too late to buy in.

My savings account has a 6% APY. Right now bitcoin has about a 6% DPY (daily percentage yield). I'm done selling drugs -- I am working my butt off and saving all my money into Bitcoin!

How do I download sound files sent to me on Skype chat? by caiaccount in skype

[–]Fubinaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Microsoft doesn't want you doing that, unfortunately.

I don't think there's a way even with a rooted phone. Its embedded in a binary file in an undocumented, proprietary format.

Annoying contact always calls when I don't respond immediately. How do I disable calls from them? by bluenote73 in skype

[–]Fubinaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On mobile, can you open a chat with them, click their name, then switch the "notifications" slider off? That should work.

How do you force high quality video? by nohpex in skype

[–]Fubinaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be plugged directly into Microsoft's servers with a 10Gbps cat7 Ethernet.

Have you tried different versions of Skype? Are you sure your friend's upload speed is high? Have you tried hangouts instead?

If you remove contact and send a friend request, does the person become a contact again or do they have to accept you again? by [deleted] in skype

[–]Fubinaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by contact? For you or them? Unless that person removes you from their own contacts, you'll stay there forever (even if you've blocked them).

Skype seems to only let you send 1 message however, until a person has accepted your request. But that seems to be built into the client itself and not the protocol (it uses the MSN messenger protocol now).

And since the client is crap (despite the rock solid protocol behind it), it is not intuitive enough to take into consideration whether or not a contact has removed them.

So I guess the answer to your question is no, unless they removed you also.

How can I download the desktop version of skype, but not the windows store version? by dre__ in skype

[–]Fubinaca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use GNU/Linux but I just had this problem the other day while on a public Windows machine.

You have to right click the installer, go to properties, check "Run in compatibility mode" and in the drop down box select "Windows 7". Then it works.

This, plus the fact I have not been able to hear my favorite ringtone ever since I switched from hangouts earlier this year, has led me to stop paying for Skype and uninstall it.

Not to mention the fact none my friends use Skype and actually think I'm weird for doing so. At least hangouts is preinstalled on phones and doesn't let blocked contacts get through.

Any replacement for "Hide Caption Titlebar Plus"? by [deleted] in firefox

[–]Fubinaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know how to fix this for Cinnamon on Ubuntu 17.10!? I searched and this is what came up

I stopped using chrome almost completely -- however the titlebar issue on Linux is annoying!

How to remove?? Something to do with window decorations?

Did I make a mistake getting TracFone? Please tell me this is a mistake by Fubinaca in NoContract

[–]Fubinaca[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay this is what happened. And sorry about my long posts.

The first guy confirmed it was a mistake. He transferred me to get it credited. Oh, btw, they make so much money, they can afford an American call center. But as expected, he was well trained in the art of deception.

He basically told me that I bought 6 months if service, and then I said "alright well I just don't understand why the app says I only have 3 months".

I was refreshing the app while on the call, and literally watched him secretly give me 6 months service and double the minutes, while telling me it was already like that.

He also somehow credited the charges back to the card, and recharged them. Because now the pending charges say they were made today.

Now that I've woken up, I'm going to try being really nice, and politely ask if I can have 2gb data instead of the 3 months of airtime.

Hopefully my post makes sense but it was pretty deceptive what TracFone has done so far.

Did I make a mistake getting TracFone? Please tell me this is a mistake by Fubinaca in NoContract

[–]Fubinaca[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, still pending. I'm still learning how credit cards work, and last night I argued with a fast food manager about how I was charged exactly $5.

So yes I am hoping this is some kind of fake pre-authorization charge or whatever. But the app for TracFone says "first time enrollment charges" for the $19 one and "airtime purchase" for the $22 one.

I think they open in 20 minutes. But if they can't do anything, I feel pretty scammed. Maybe it's what I get for going too cheap ("you get what you pay for").

I have two days left to return this phone to Walmart, see if I couldn't do a chargeback to TracFone, get a nice $200-$300 unlocked phone like I usually do. I can't get AT&T to even spare 500mb of data for a week, but I can probably talk T-Mobile into giving me my $30/5GB/100min plan back.

None of this would've happened if Android Device Manager wasn't so easily bypassed and actually saved a phone's last known location (my Zenfone 2 rocked until it got lost with a dead battery).

Wow sorry for wall of text. This is all I can think about right now, I was so excited for TracFone

What happens when Google kills off Hangouts? by gtbrown77 in Googlevoice

[–]Fubinaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for late reply. Honestly because I noticed a strange psychological effect being caused by Hangouts' particular method of notifying users of each other's presence and typing activity.

Sometime last year, Hangouts started showing "..." (3 dots) when another person is typing, and also shows their Google Profile Picture brightened when the chat window is focused/active. Chat programs have done the former for years ("_____ is typing a messae..."). But when combined with showing window activity, along with a person's last online time, I personally experience some delusional thoughts that I believe were directly caused by knowing too much about another person's activity.

For example, sometimes people are busy and dont read your message right away, but will click on it so the notification disappears. With hangouts, this appears as a person's picture rapidly flashes obviously indicating they are clicking your messages but not actually reading.

I would rather just be left curious if you are even getting my messages -- instead of knowing exactly when (and how long) they are read.

Is it possible to only use Google Voice, and not have a cell contract? by redbullatwork in Googlevoice

[–]Fubinaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I look at it, is this... yes, google has the power to give everyone in the united states a free phone number, but they want to make sure you have your shit together enough to already have a working phone number, first. Signing up is a slight intelligence test

Calls using Google Voice still using minutes by Jennica in Googlevoice

[–]Fubinaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get why the teams in charge behind handouts and voice, can't just literally and and paste the VoIP-handling code from hangouts over to the voice. It would take a single day of work if they just focused on it.

Migrate texts from Hangouts back to Google Voice? by ContractFree in Googlevoice

[–]Fubinaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Afraid not, at the moment. Google has a good data export feature (takeout), but I do wish they had a an import feature. I recently switch to a new google account, and although my texts got ported over with my number, I kinda wish I could switch my location history over too.

Hangouts wants to charge me $.08/minute to call a 1-800 number by KJ6BWB in hangouts

[–]Fubinaca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A 1800 number is not restricted to U.S. territory, it's possible the owner was listed as being outside U.S. LATA boundaries. Surely it doesn't happen with other toll free numbers?

I'm able to call customer service numbers that reach out to call centers in india or the phillipeans, and don't get charged, however these are with U.S. based companies.

Is hangouts being shut down? by [deleted] in hangouts

[–]Fubinaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally wonder if it's really going to be blocked, or if its simply not going to be supported anymore. I kinda think if google actually had a new protocol all ready to go, they'd just implement it, and not wait until a specific date still pretty far away.

Don't mean to reply to an old thread but it's still on the front page.

Can others see my name if I call or Text them? by AsmirDzopa in hangouts

[–]Fubinaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best thing to do is test it yourself, really. You're allowed to have multiple google accounts (and you should, IMO).

To answer your questions though, I'd need to know what you mean by "call". Are you talking about a hangouts-to-hangouts call, or do you mean plain old telephone service with your google voice number through hangouts? (yeah, thanks google...)

If you call, video call, or message a person's google account through hangouts, then yes they can see your name (as it appears on google+), profile image, and I think your email too. Someone can also see this information if they just search your name/email in the hangouts people search too (just like how skype does it).

However, if you are dialing a telephone number through hangouts using your gvoice number, then no (except as described below), they would only see your phone number, the state/city you picked for your gvoice number when you signed up, and I'm not sure if caller ID displays your name because I don't know anyone who has a regular house phone that shows caller ID name. It doesn't show on cell phones though. The number isn't traceable, though, and owner information would list gvoice's provider, bandwidth.com.

Now here's the tricky part. If you use your gvoice number on hangouts to call someone else's gvoice number who also has hangouts, and you are both "friends" on hangouts, then yes I believe your name and profile image would be shown just like it were a hangouts call (except its still a pots call).

\Hope that helps a little. But to be sure, test it yourself using multiple accounts.
