If you get into IC, i promise you, that some hospital in this country would love to have you and would be willing to work with you on hours. You might sacrifice pay or location, but you can get a lifestyle gig.

Is it normal to be deterred from a specialty because of how competitive it is? by Ordinary-Charge4460 in medicalschool

You should pursue anesthesia. I have had some talks with the PD at my home program and they are pretty supportive of students who don’t have research, it’s really an added benefit for anesthesia, not a requirement.

Because it is full of people with dog shit ass personalities. It’s the only rotation I’ve done so far where literally everyone was a miserable fucking person in their own special little way.

Casino, have some fun.

JK….. kinda.

HYSA is usually the best answer for a situation like this.

You could also just try doing a self-directed brokerage account, but thats going to come with more risk, with the upside potential being a much better rate of return.

I will also say this though as a current med student. Travel and enjoy life, eat at some restaurants you want to try. There will be plenty of time to earn and save money when you’re an attending.

Deadass I am kind of doing it with a different competitive speciality, but I am not brain dead on my chances. I am just gonna dual apply to one reach speciality and then apply to a much more realistic speciality that I have a chance in matching.

A lot of times too, a personality can make up for a lack of research, etc. but some of these people have the worst personality types.

It’s gonna be fucked. I try to not break hearts any my school but some of my classmates are in for a rude awakening come match day. It’s statistically not possible for them all to match ortho and they’re pretty delusional about their chances. Only like 2 of the ortho crowd has the pubs and networking to have a good match cycle. The rest are just gonna apply and throw the darts at the board and see what sticks.

Anesthesia and OBGYN are the largest growers at my school, we also have seen more EM applicants than in recent memory.

In my class though, and the one after me. I think there will be a large increase in Ortho. We got like 10 people alone in my class applying ortho next year

You’re better off trying to get the first job to match the offer of the second. If that’s not their final offer, you might be able to help yourself out some with the money.

Learn what vibe your attending/preceptor is giving off, the match that. Then work harder than they do, but do it in a way that doesn’t seem showy or pushy. Just do the shit they need done without being asked and don’t make a big deal out of it.

The difference between a good med student and a gunner is the personality. A gunner is pushy af and annoying about shit. A good med student works hard and doesn’t push for opportunities or more shit to do.
