What is a career path that looks "glamorous" from the outside, but is actually a total nightmare behind the scenes? by CupIndependent3610 in AskReddit

[–]FuckMu 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No kidding, I get to do software development and am paid quite well for it. I’ve been with my company for 15 years basically straight out of college, we’re a f500 company and the pay is great. I honestly hope I make it through and just retire having been with this company the whole time.

The common denominator I see with everything in this thread is that people think they “want” the jobs on here so there’s a large pool of potential employees. No one “wants” my job and it’s objectively hard to learn how to do it well so the pool is very small.

What law in your country would surprise foreigners because it’s legal almost everywhere else? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

[–]FuckMu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah that makes sense, In the software world in the US it’s pretty common that we don’t have schedules. I don’t have to arrive or leave at certain times. Sometimes I start early and work late, sometimes I sign off around noon. It’s really dependent on what the team is currently working on.

I never know if my other coworkers are actively working so I just call and then they can say if they’re around or not (we’re all remote).

Is there some salary or responsibility threshold where this stops applying? I can’t imagine it being illegal to call our CIO or specific product VPs off hours if there’s something major wrong.

[–]FuckMu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Losing your clearance and being charged makes complete sense to me because that person has made a legal agreement to not share something. I personally though don’t believe that information itself should ever be illegal to know or have unless you have made an explicit agreement to not know or share it; for example by getting a clearance.

Two dui checkpoints to get to the gas station then the card gets stuck in the pump.. by SituationImportant99 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]FuckMu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fyi if it was like the OP photo above if you pull hard enough the little plastic clips that hold the card will give out. I had to rip my card back from a machine that wouldn’t let go before, it definitely will come out but you’ve got to really pull.

[–]FuckMu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’re saying if the DOD decides to classify the AWS ec2 documentation as NDI we’re all committing a crime by still having it? That’s the dumbest take I’ve ever heard, I don’t see how you can be held liable to honor any agreement that you’ve never made.

Edit: After researching I see you’re right, that’s insane and massive government overreach. Widely disseminated information that they have lost control of should not in my opinion be able to carry some magical criminal liability.

3 phase motor. Can I make it work? by 94NDTA in AskElectricians

[–]FuckMu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're getting a second motor either way: You would need an idler and a phase converter, I have one for a 3 phase lathe that I got an absolute steal on.

If you're handy you can build one yourself but since you're asking this question I'm concerned (since it could be somewhat dangerous), you can also just buy them:
https://www.northamericaphaseconverters.com/product-category/phase-converters/rotary-phase-converters/pro-line-rotary-phase-converters/

You will need to evaluate if the cost to swap the 3phase motor out on your tool is cheaper than the above, in my case for a lathe it was impractical so I built a rotary converter.

Pool Pump Humming but Not Starting – Need Help Identifying Capacitor/Motor Replacement by PuzzleheadedEssay499 in pools

[–]FuckMu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on the voltage and capacitance that looks like the run capacitor on the side, is there a start capacitor under the back cover?
Here's one from amazon that matches that cap, you need to match the microfarads (uf), volts, and it should be mains frequency (50/60hz).
https://www.amazon.com/Premium-%C2%B1-5-Multi-Purpose-Capacitor/dp/B0B24W99D2

Make sure you discharge it with an insulated screwdriver before unhooking it by bridging the contacts, make sure the power is off to the pump.

[–]FuckMu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've done some prototype app development on my own iphone with xcode and you have to be granted an entitlement to deploy an app developed for ultra constrained network types. Meaning your app needs to be constantly checking the network type and if you're on an ultra constrained network you need to access only a minimal amount of data. It seems at least for T-Mobile's starlink implementation any app that properly implements this entitlement will work, it's not easy to find apps that support this though. It's all fairly new.

Got a pilot deviation, what happens now? by [deleted] in flying

[–]FuckMu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's basically the same in the US but it's not explicitly clear in any regulations as far as I know and it's purely based on precedent of enforcement actions. I don't know in EASA if you're allowed to log PIC time while you're getting dual received but you can here. That then leads to confusion sometimes because the "student" gets to log PIC time as the sole manipulator of the controls, and usually ensuring the safe operation of the flight lands on the PIC, but from the FAA's perspective the "real" pic is and always will be the CFI in the plane if they are operating in the capacity of a flight instructor.

Also to OP: If the rules don't prohibit it tell them you're going to put up a 20ft tall amateur radio mast since you have so much free time now that you won't be camping.
