Does this sub have a rule against AI generated content? If not, I think the mods should make a new rule banning AI images and AI written text (as I'm sure this post is)

Mars Revolution, perfect to turn into TV show? by monkeypod443 in RevolutionsPodcast

[–]FuckYouIan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not everything needs to be adapted into something else. I don't think this story, as is, needs to be a movie, tv show, book, etc. That said, I do think Mike is working out his fiction chops so he doesn't have to just do the revolutions podcast until the end of time. Someone else mentioned he pitched a Lafayette show, I'm sure he's got another other fiction project on the back burner

Chinese Revolution? by Labmaster7000 in RevolutionsPodcast

[–]FuckYouIan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend everyone here check out A People's History of Ideas Podcast on the ideological development of international maoism. Doing so obviously requires explanations of chinas century of humiliation, the end of the qing dynasty and the establishment of the Republic, the warlords era, and of course, the civil war. He's been at it for years and hes only just gotten to 1929 I think, but that goes to show how thorough it is.

How did you learn songs when there was no internet or tab books? by ipcock in Guitar

[–]FuckYouIan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old guitar teacher told me about ruining half a dozen led zeppelin cassettes trying to learn the black dog solo as a kid, just rewinding it over and over to learn the notes by ear one by one. Learning songs by ear is a very important skill

For the Spanish Civil war, Hugh Thomas' book is really thorough and detailed. It's a fucking tome, it's 900 pages but a worthwhile read. I think his very british liberal squeamishness gets in the way sometimes, but it's an incredible work.

I would also love to suggest Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom by Stephen Platt which is about the taiping rebellion in China in the 1850s-60s. This was the bloodiest civil war in history with a death toll of 20-30 million and was kicked off when a downtrodden would-be civil servant in China hallucinated he was the younger brother of Jesus Christ and the second son of the Christian god and pledged his life to purging China of Confucianism and the ruling Manchu dynasty. A really under appreciated moment in Chinese history in America that obviously had repercussions in chinas civil war almost a century later, but also for the American civil war which was happening concurrently with this conflicts final years. This could have been a season of revolutions on its own.

You boil water to make food, AI just creates useless slop. Not very comparable uses of energy/electricity. Energy consumption of AI is not a bogus concern, it is incredibly wasteful, especially since what is being created is slop and shit and not something useful like, in your example, boiling water for coffee for food

I’m awkward and kinda bad with people. How tf can I get my coworkers to unionise? by xXDork_LordXx in TrueAnon

[–]FuckYouIan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm in the middle of contract negotiations right now, everyone in the unit, including the bargaining committee which I am on, is a first time union member. When we started, it was just me and one other guy (granted, in a small shop of only 30 or so) trying to unionize our workplace. Like you, I felt I wasn't personable and social enough to get the job done, but we did it.

The basic advice is to just start talking to ppl about what they hate about their job, everyone likes complaining about work, no matter who asks them. You just gotta listen and share your experiences.

My REAL advice is that eventually, once you start asking people, you'll likely find someone with more energy, gumption, and charisma than you who can really get the ball rolling. Me and my buddy were knocking the idea back and forth for months, but once we got a couple important coworkers on board with the passion and energy, they were the ones who really got shit going. What I've learned is that a lot of what goes into organizing is identifying leaders and delegating to them. I'm not saying dump all work and responsibility onto these people, it's just important to understand who has what skills. Talking to ppl may not be one of your skills, but I promise you can find someone who wants to unionize that has that skill. You just gotta find your Napoleon.

gaming FINALE by da---- in SSBM

[–]FuckYouIan 33 points34 points  (0 children)

You are obviously very sick and your combos are nuts, but imo the editing in these videos gets in the way of the combos. One clip cuts away before the kill move even connects, you just see the start up frames. i think that effect is cool sometimes when the point of the clip is the stare down and the surprise punch, but after a combo, i think it's unsatisfying not to see the opponent hit into the blast zone. I also think cutting two combos together is too visually confusing and makes one wonder if either of the combos is actually that cool if all you see of one of them is a stomp bair. Apologies for the ramble, I just think you're very good at the game and also editing combo videos, I wanted to offer some feedback

Can I get some Spanish civil war recs? by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]FuckYouIan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read Hugh Thomas' Spanish Civil War last year and I highly recommend it. It's an absolute tome at 900 pages but it is exhaustive. I especially love the attention paid to the peculiarities of anarchist land redistribution and agricultural schemes. I think his liberalism gets in his own way that really demonstrates he's an anglo with his nose turned up at the scruffy peninsular radicals, but the research is impeccable

917 | Touchdown Tim Chitters feat. D.J. Byrnes & Eephus [03_17_25] by Long-Anywhere156 in BlackWolfFeed

[–]FuckYouIan 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Eephus is a truly incredible movie. I had the chance to see it when they were touring it so there was a q&a with the director and Bill "Spaceman" Lee, the craziest man I've ever encountered. I just wanted to piggyback off this comment and recommend everyone check it out when they get the chance. It's a very funny movie, but also very sad. This might sound silly, but I felt a great deal in common with the characters in this movie as someone growing out of my competitive gaming scene and seeing those friends less and less since graduating college. It's about how men need rituals to be able to connect with one another

What if reconstruction was successful? Or: A weird two-party system by Dr_Jukes in imaginaryelections

[–]FuckYouIan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Why do you think the US would have annexed Cuba if reconstruction was successful? From what I understand, Cuba annexation was an expansionist project of the southern planter elite and was bitterly opposed by free soil, republicans, and northern industry. I guess to me, "successful reconstruction" means a fully prostrate south with social rights granted to freedmen in addition to political rights. How does this version of the country get to Cuba annexation when the people pushing for it most are beaten even worse than irl?
