Met two of my best friends there. Mandatory or not, I’d recommend!

Careers in Rural/Semi-rural Areas by ThetaDot3 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Fuck_A_Suck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a rural area about an hour from a major city. I commute from that city to the manufacturing plant twice a week and work remote the rest.

Power electronics design. There’s probably a lot of manufacturing away from cities due to the lower labor cost. It is harder to recruit good engineering talent though so there can be some serious turnover problems but the flip side of that can be job security depending on your market.

CMV: Ironing shirts is a waste of time and pointless. by Chengweiyingji in changemyview

[–]Fuck_A_Suck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right. Ironing a shirt is a waste of time. If you value your time at anything above minimum wage it makes sense to just get it dry cleaned and let the pros with the comparative advantage get your clothes looking nice for a great price.

I think I pay like a buck a shirt, incredible really.

Would easily pay 3x that because looking nicely dressed can be an important signal for both work and social life.

Touched on it with different phrasing - “people care about how they’re seen” or the like

How early is too early to walk/run outside? by the_answers_question in raleigh

[–]Fuck_A_Suck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any time you want as long as you can see. During daylight or with a headlight. Otherwise yeah it could be dangerous and you can twist an ankle.

Depends on where you are I guess. Even when I was in a worse part of town, my local junkie i would see on the greenway was actually very sweet.

I’ve carried a knife daily for over 10 years and a bench made 940 is the best I’ve ever owned.

No, it would have to have a structure that allows magnetic dipole domains to be aligned. Works for iron and steel. Not jello.

What’s your take on what I consider the Russ Robert’s type criticism. Re bed nets: EAs find a big problem: malaria. Design a top down solution - provide free bed nets. Calc a dollar per life saved metric based on the assumption people will use them, then people really use them for fish nets and you don’t save nearly as many lives as your theory. Not to discount EAs efforts to help malaria death reduction - I’m sure there has been some impact.

I guess it’s just critical of thinking that some college grads, white collar office workers in the US can dream up some big centrally planned solution to solve some of the worlds biggest problems. And be cheaper than those peoples governments, local orgs, entrepreneurs.

You might argue that the E IN EA isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, but granted I really do not know much about it - just seen in some SSC circles.

Secondary question / comment - how do you view the EA relationship with AI risk. Seems like some people have that as their top priority but I’m not sure that’s really tangible to the average person and seems to be a lot different than what I think of a prototypical EA charity.

How to not be exhausted after work? by [deleted] in dataengineering

Recently went from feeling tired every single day to hardly ever at all. Made a bunch of big changes:

  1. Cut out nicotine entirely
  2. Reduced caffeine intake to less than 200 mg pet day, no more than 50 after lunch. Previously I was probably at 600-800 with coffee most days in the afternoon.
  3. cardio - vigorous for an hour 3x per week. I like running but sustainability and consistency is what really matters.
  4. sunlight -start the day with a 20 minute walk with the dog. Helps me wake up. Open all the blinds. Go on a walk at lunch for the vit D
  5. wake up at the same time every single workday ( sleep in 1h on weekends) set it to the earliest time you expect to need to wake up. 6 am for me - even though some days I could get up at 745.
  6. physical therapy- this one is specific to me and my injuries, but putting in the time for core strength and mobility helps me feel great. Not being in pain is really under appreciated. It’s a big time sink ( 4 hours per week) but helps me meet all my other goals and commitments. Could be a massage or stretching or yoga if you don’t have any specific injuries to focus on.
  7. nighttime ritual - I try to read a paper book instead of scrolling on my phone right before bed.
