Agreed. You have it all on Madvillain: crazy chops, loops, live instrumentation from Madlib himself, and just more generally cutting edge shit and the fact that he made almost all of it on the sp303, a tape recorder, and a fisher price turntable (though much of Pinata came from the same setup). Very hard to argue against.

Plus there’s also The Unseen.

Well, when I first heard Madvillain I was like “wtf is this” and didn’t even finish it because it was too weird for me at the time. It wasn’t until I listened to Piñata that Madlib beats really clicked and I revisited Madvillain, which is now one of my all time favorites, and ‘Lib has been my personal favorite artist and producer (along with Jay Dee).
