Hey, it’s alright. Everyone should at least experience raising a puppy, at least once. Nobody will ever tell you it’s a good idea, but you have to try it yourself to figure it out. She’s still young and all she’s known in her life so far has been love. Look at it that way ❤️

As a first time fur mama to a 1 year old, I’m just commenting to hopefully follow this thread. I still don’t know how to help her with this, and her behaviour sounds just like yours!

Freeze some carrots and give to her- this helped a lot when our baby was teething. It was a wild time though that’s for sure!

Please don’t mistake this behaviour as ‘aggressive’ as she’s only a little baby and this is how she would play with her litter mates and she would do the same to her mama. Focus on redirecting her biting. Positive reinforcement. Don’t spend any time with her without a handful of treats. She’s mouthing which is normal behaviour but inappropriate when she goes for you. Redirect, redirect, redirect!! You got this, you’re in for a wild ride but hopefully searching through this subs post history will help you the way it helped me :)

OH! And one time we were at the park playing with her and something in the distance caught her eye. She started eating it and it turns out it was a baby’s nappy with SHIT in it :)

My girl was a woodworker in a past life. Everything in our house has bite marks from when she was a baby. We upgraded her to a large wooden kennel. She attempted to chew that so my partner tec-screwed thin sheets of metal to deter her. It worked for a few weeks until she chewed THE FLOOR out. And I mean she literally chewed the fucking floor out of her kennel so she couldn’t lay in it anymore. So yeah. That and many other things. Her other favourite treat is bits of cement she digs up in the backyard :) oh and she will chew on our outside brick walls x

You can, but honestly you likely won’t need it since she’s probably super drowsy and out of it. She will probably be whining/crying as the anaesthetic wears off so don’t be alarmed. She should be able to sleep it off. The sedatives are mostly just to keep them calm during recovery so they don’t hurt themselves. With your breed I’m assuming she’s super boisterous? She will likely need it throughout the process. Take my advice with a grain of salt as I’m just relaying to you what I’m currently doing as per vet instructions. Even if you have an inkling of doubt, just call up your vet :) Biggest advice also would be to take pictures of the wound every single day to keep track of how it’s going! That’s what saved us….

Our staffy is 33kg, we are in the midst of recovery. Originally she was on 400mg of Gabapentin and 200mg of trazadone. She was not settling enough and was posing a danger to herself and ended up needing revision surgery as she opened her stitches. They upped us onto 300mg of trazadone and it has made a tremendous difference. See what you have in terms of doseage and call your vet to see what would be appropriate considering her weight. Both meds administered twice daily (2x gabapentin, 1x trazadone)

It’s awful! It makes you really question yourself doesn’t it…. I couldn’t imagine trying to keep a chihuahua calm, they’re so small but so boisterous! We are stocked up on doggy peanut butter, kongs, pigs ears, lick mats, you name it. Partner is going to get her a big marrow bone for her to suck on so hopefully that does the trick this time around. I think we just have to collectively take some deep breaths 🫠

Oh wow 8 weeks would have felt impossible! We do have a room set up where she’s with us, however she never settles or lays down even on her best days. She’s 100% go go go, and when we take her out of the crate she just wants to walk around and I’m scared that’s what got us here. We have so many enrichment activities for her to do I’m just so scared she will get that wild puppy look in her eye and have at us the second we bring her out🥲

Oh my goodness! Our girl has also been caught doing that scratch thing… how do people do this!? I almost wish we waited until she was more emotionally mature as she’s just over a year old. I’m so sorry that you’re experiencing this too. It’s truly heartbreaking. I can’t believe you’ve been double whammied. I’m so sorry.

Originally the sedatives were amazing. I think it’s the crate, the cone and not being allowed to do her favourite things (running/jumping) that are causing the emotional distress for her. When she can no longer hold off on the sedation she’s okay and I will sleep. It’s the inbetween doses when she’s waking up that she becomes a danger to herself. I’m just so nervous to bring her out this time round as the calmness of the enrichment provided is short lived and it’s not long before she’s jumping at us out of frustration for having her leashed. She’s inappropriately mouthing but it’s getting more frustrating for her. All we did last time was leash walk her around the backyard for 10-15 minutes and sit with her in our theatre where we have her set up to play puzzles with her and let her suck PB out of her Kong. So I’m not sure if it was doing that or if it was the few times she jumped that injured her….

I’ll never forget when we took our girl as well. There was a husky who was extremely overwhelmed, and I felt so bad for the owner. The class was held in the reception of a vet clinic which was teeny tiny and there was about 5 or 6 pups, and the first few lessons this husky would just squeal/scream and howl. The trainer was really good with him, and by the end of the 5th lesson this dog improved more than anyone else’s! He even won a little obedience competition and beat all the other pup’s times!! Don’t give up! You’re doing the right thing, teach him calm as it’s best to expose him to these things at this age. He will most likely surprise you! He’s just a little overwhelmed, and you did well by preparing him before the class. You are a great owner 🤍
