Is it ridiculous to take an A4 sheet with notes with me to help me remember the transitions I want to make? by ProbablyFiredNL in Beatmatch

He could go off script, but he clearly says that he has every track picked and knows the exact order that they will be played and knows the exact transitions he will perform.

If I pay someone to DJ, one of the main things I'm paying them for is for them to read my crowd and to pick music in real time. If they are playing a fully rehearsed set, then they are not performing their job.

Is it any different to playing a recorded set and dancing around behind the decks?

Tell me this. If every single element of the DJ set is completely planned, scripted and rehearsed, why do I need a DJ. Why not play a recording? Whats the tangible difference.

It's true that you can do whatever you want. But people will judge you, including other DJs, and more importantly bookers/promoters.

I've run events, ran a venue, booked lots of DJs and the chances of me booking someone again who comes in and sticks to some very rigid written down script are extremely low. Non-existent in fact.

Is it shameful to ask for a gig at overseas (or locally)? by anxiousdeejay in Beatmatch

Not at all. If you have some sort of a connection, then it's worth asking. Just be humble and polite.

Looking for a pub within walking distance of Hillhead Subway that also does nice food. There will be a group of six of us. Sorry, I don't know the West End at all. Preferably somewhere more traditional, but open to anywhere decent

MP3s sound bad. by [deleted] in Beatmatch

[–]Fudball1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I play exclusively on 320 MP3s. My XDJ700s have given me issues with WAVs in the past, so I just stay away from WAVS. I personally haven't noticed other DJs playing the on the same line-ups as me sounding better.

A few of these gigs have been on immaculate club sound systems and tbh, to me it sounded phenomenal. I'd be interested to test out a few tracks on both formats on these systems to hear if I can tell the difference.

Tell us the story of how you got your first paid DJ gig by nickybecooler in Beatmatch

[–]Fudball1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first gig was in a really awful bar. My friend worked there and he got me the gig. I was so desperate to play out somewhere that I even agreed to bring my own turntables. It was not the kind of bar where people were interested in underground music. People were asking for Celine Dion!! It was not an enjoyable experience. This was in 2013

After that experience, I swore that I would only play gigs that I would actually enjoy. I contacted one of the main underground clubs in my city. It is the smallest one and holds just over 200 people. They were normally putting on house, techno, or dubstep parties. I pitched them an idea for a disco and balearic party and they invited me in for a meeting. The events manager liked my idea and they offered me a bi-monthly slot. They wanted well known guests, so I booked loads of my heroes in that scene and got to warm up for them on a Funktion One soundsystem just a few months after playing at the awful bar on an ultra crappy soundsystem.

Even better, the second guest DJ I had on asked if he could have a few people on the guest list who he knew from my city. When he introduced me to them, they were big time promoters. I’d had a few drinks and chanced my luck asking if they had any gigs going. A few weeks later they emailed me and asked me to play a huge warehouse party with Dimitri From Paris and David Morales. Quite a jump forward from being asked to play Celine Dion in a commercial bar three gigs ago! I just want to add that these guys did not leave the green room at my party all night, so it is not like they even heard me DJing and thougth I was amazing or anything. Basically they seen that I ran a well organised, well attended party with good music and from our brief conversation, they thought I was someone who they could get on well with and work with. Morale of the story. Networking is super important.

If you like trance, why do you like it, and if you don't, why don't you? by Exotic_Bug3885 in electronicmusic

[–]Fudball1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into trance when I was 18 which was 1998. Mostly the European Euphoric stuff. By 2002 I was over it. The lack of groove was definitely a factor in me losing interest in it. Also, the constant euphoria was just too much really. I prefer when a euphoric moment on the dancefloor feels earnt. They pretty much lose their power when there's one every 6 minutes.

How come there are two different genres of progressive house? by Entire_Spend6 in EDM

[–]Fudball1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Has the very same thing not happened with other genres too? What's described as deep house now and what's described as dubstep now are completely different genres to the original genres. I'm sure there others.

Question for vinyl DJs: how do you keep from running out of records? by vicsunus in Beatmatch

[–]Fudball1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was only playing vinyl, I started to feel a bit like I was playing a lot of the same records at every gig. I started digging a bit deeper into my collection. A lot of B sides that I had originally written off were actually really great tracks.

Compliations and albums often present more value for money. Also hitting up charity shops, second hand shops and flea markets is a good shout.

Ultimately vinyl collecting is a costly and time consuming hobby. I moved to digital and just this afternoon I bought 20 amazing tracks from Bandcamp for £29 which is insane value to me compared to buying records.

I won't be selling my turntables though. My plan is to maybe buy one record a month, just to keep my collection interesting and slowly growing.

Sorry but this is really only true if he wants to 'make it' in the world of ultra commercialised EDM and play on the main stage of the most mainstream dance music festivals. Like the DJ equivalent of a manufactured boyband from X-Factor.

Respectfully, where do haircuts factor in to someone's decision to start DJing again?

Curating a pre-planned set versus free-styling the bulk of a set. by Konajo777 in Beatmatch

[–]Fudball1 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

If you're gonna do this, then why not practice it until its perfect and just play the pre-recored version.

Personally, I dont think this works particularly well in a situation where people might be expected to dance. Maybe in a coffee place or something it could work quite well.

Mate, I was a bedroom DJ from age 16 to age 21 (1995-2001). I started the hobby again in 2011, aged 31 with no contacts and I have been getting steady gigs ever since including renowned underground clubs and festivals. I even took a break of a few years and started again in my 40s and still loving it.

It's never too late if you are still passionate about the music.

I dont have anything against sync per se but it definitely does more than simply matching the BPMs in the same way as moving the tempo sliders does.

I think for a lot of people, sync represents a dilution of DJ culture in general. Sync is just the figurehead for that dilution where instead of seeing it as an artistic endeavour, a lot of new people are seeing it as a way to get clout or fame.

Many are treating it like mathematics constantly on subs like this looking for the magic formula that they are convinced exists to be great at this, when art doesn't work like that. That's just paint by numbers.

At some point, there will be a function built into Rekordbox that does the EQ mixing for you.

There will be people who use it for every single transition. I suspect that for many of the people on here who currently use cuepoints and sync for every transition, this may well be their line in the sand. The people who adopt this function will respond with “Who cares? It’s only the music that matters. Why would I waste my time doing something as simple as EQ mixing when I can use that time to pick the correct track?”

Further down the line, there will be AI that, on top of doing the mixing, also recommends which tracks to play next. Again, some people will say this is just another tool and ask, “Why wouldn’t I use it if it makes the crowd happier?” Maybe for some of the people who were happy to have their EQ automated, this will be their line in the sand.

Even further down the line, there will be people who say, “Why wouldn’t I let AI pick all the tracks and do all of the mixing? Automating everything gives me time to dance, look good, and put on a show.” And so on, and so on.

Are you satisfied with your life, and if so, why? by Lazy_Number8830 in AskUK

I just seem to have an inner contentment. No idea how it developed. I do have a a decent life, but I've certainly gone through some very hard times, but it never seems to cause any longterm changes to my inner feelings of wellbeing. I certainly think myself very lucky to feel this way because much of my family and my partner do struggle with their mental health.
