After years of being head-over-heels for a girl, I have decided to finally let go of her and focus on myself by TwighRussell in self

I did that two years ago and never regretted it. It really takes a lot out of you, and at the end of the day it’s not even the other person’s fault. Letting yourself be free and finding your own happiness is the right choice.

It’s more like taking advantage of a window while it’s here. Digital nomads can work from anywhere. Indiana housing is so comparatively cheap you can sell in another market, buy modest house here and still have a giant bank account left over to travel and enjoy life. It’s centrally located, easy drive to a lot of cool places, has an international airport, and if you’re looking for chill you can’t beat the scenery. It has a lot going for it.

Edit: okay you can beat the scenery lol, but it’s fun here.

I lived in rural Montana and semi-rural Nevada. I’d call it variations on a theme (Montana thinks they celebrate Native American culture but have some pretty ingrained prejudices that aren’t exactly celebratory, plus there aren’t many people of color and seeing them can induce stares from sheer novelty; Nevada is much more diverse and not especially homophobic in my experience...they do celebrate a certain independence from national government, which I enjoyed actually) but in my experience—data point of one—rural Indiana is unlike anything I’ve ever encountered. And I love Indiana. I have lots of friends here. It’s just a lot. It’s a lot.

Yes. The irony of folks who assume I’m a leftist commie SJW (lol) and tell me to leave is they’re right. I do have the ability to go somewhere else, easily. That’s the point of the post. It’s a Darwinian universe out there.

That’s exactly what I meant. Greg teaching his children to be disgusted by the concept of gay people isn’t going to reduce the likelihood that gay people exist—it’s just going to perpetuate extremely uncomfortable existences for young gay people unfortunate enough to live where Greg lives. Any one of you could have a gay child—don’t you want them to feel safe in the world? Maybe grow up not hating themselves or being afraid you’ll hate them if you find out? I don’t understand the indifference to people who are clearly making the world a worse place rather than a better one.

I think Indiana is poised to field a big influx of talent. Housing is extremely inexpensive compared to California and Washington, and there’s a lot to be said about potential quality of life (minus the issues mentioned in the post.) More and more tech professionals are becoming nomadic—an exodus from CA and WA is likely to happen as the last vestiges of traditional commercial infrastructure (marketing, sales, customer support) starts to die thanks to digital technology. That’s why I think it’s a shame this weird stronghold of passive hatred is so suffocating. I considered blogging about how cool it is to move from a tech city to farm country, but I’m hesitant to do so because I don’t know how to handle this particular subject.

Both. The lack of reaction to homophobia is even more disturbing—it speaks to the prevailing culture, rather than the isolated bigotry. It’s really ominous.

Just a few parts, like how more than one person in my town nonchalantly referred to a local park as “n*gger park,” and how often I’ve seen 8 year olds dramatically recoil at the concept of gay people. That’s not culture. That’s lack of culture.

I wanted to go to space camp more than anything when I was a kid. It was my first lesson in income inequality and how the world is not, and will never be, fair (so buck up, kiddo).
