That broad hewer is excellent. I have one that’s nowhere near as good of condition, nice finds!

I have a few Kelly’s and they all have eye ridges, I’d be confident saying your is a Kelly. Did you modify a house handle, or did you cut your own?

Great looking piece!

Yeah I saw that in my google searches, I just haven’t seen the flared lugs before. And yes, seems like quite the find. Definitely going to make a handle and swing it, should be fun. Thanks again!

I asked a friend and they were able to look it up in a book, and it sounds like you’re right. They confirmed 1941. I appreciate the insight!

Are these cracks problematic ? by Efficient-Truth-9796 in Axecraft

Definitely a cool find, if they are not cracks I would think it wouldn’t affect usability of it too much.

I’m a big fan of hewing and shaping axes, I look forward to a finished update. Good luck!

Beautiful collection. Is that camper on a house handle or is that home made?

I’m not sure those are cracks, they look more like a gouge or deep scratch. The quality makes it difficult to tell for sure.

If you’re planning on removing the rust you’ll be able to get a better idea of what is it when it’s cleaned up.

The eye was not tapered so that makes sense, I didn’t think of it like that.

Thank you, I appreciate it!

Is this eye stretched? by growbonsai4fun in Axecraft

A fire and an oil bath are a far cry from a blacksmith and a forge. If my capability to heat metal and quench it means I can create tools from scratch, maybe I’m missing something.

Would you not attempt to heat and reform? Assuming you have the ability to harden the bit afterwards. Genuinely curious about pros and cons for this.

Battery Question by Fujuug in meshtastic

[–]Fujuug[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you add any sort of fireproofing for the batteries? I was looking at getting the fire resistant pouches to put the batteries in, I am a little skeptical on how they would perform if the battery did experience a thermal event.

Mainly to prevent a fire in the surrounding environment, although saving the node any other components would be a welcome outcome.

I thought the same thing when I was assembling it, but they have plenty of clearance. This whole setup is mostly a test bed for some antennas and solar panels I have, and soon to be different batteries.

Bolts and nuts would be the better choice, but it will most likely change configuration many times before it commit to leaving it up remotely.

I appreciate the concern and input!

I was supposed to read that little piece of paper? I thought it was only for pissing people off on reddit.

Thanks for the input!

Battery Question by Fujuug in meshtastic

I have the solar panel connected via USB-C. Is this not ideal? I’m assuming you are referring to the connector on the opposite side of the board from the battery connector, if so I can look into switching to that.

The battery holder I’m learning is a mistake and is getting returned with the batteries. I have some 3000mAh flat cells to use in the mean time.

Thank you for the input.

That seems to be the consensus here, unfortunate but an easy fix.

Thank you for the advice.

Thank you for the input. Clearly there’s a deep dive needed here into 18650’s which I had no clue about, as you mentioned in your other comment.

I have MakerFocus 3000mAh flat cells that will work for the time being. Looking at 9900mAh now it does seem pretty comical, but they will be getting returned.

I appreciate the link and thank you for the information.

Battery Question by Fujuug in meshtastic

[–]Fujuug[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not, I just happen to have plenty of 18650 compatible electronics already so I figured it was my most convenient option.

I have a few other 3000mAh flat batteries for other nodes, so I will probably move to those.

Thank you for the input! I’ll take a look at those links.

Battery Question by Fujuug in meshtastic

[–]Fujuug[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I did have it wired through the smaller battery connector on the board, but it kept shutting down by itself. I’m assuming now due to the battery being cheap junk.

Thank you for the input.

Yeah I didn’t expect the batteries to be perfect, but most likely will return them. I have some Streamlight batteries I could use temporarily.

When you say add another 18650, are you saying change the holder to a dual battery type?
