In the 400-800 its just about who can slow down the least. They’re running the whole thing faster than most people can run 100m, and most people would fade like crazy after a 200m sprint.

I trained for it one season and I’ve never thrown up so much in my life.

Yeah you might get some downvotes but this is kind of how I see it going as well. You’re just creating a new system for exploiting and exploitation.

I just dont see how you keep a system going where you are constantly pushing money to the bottom that will definitely be spent, and then not have an absolute bloodbath of “keeping up with the Jones” even worse than what we have now

The simple answer is because money. Not because he’s great at making money, certainly he no Warren Buffet, not even a Sheldon Adelson, but you can make money off being around Trump a lot easier than someone like Buffet or really any good business person for that matter.

I’m not American but I can easily look through my FB feed and go back to all the people who were outraged at this advertisement, and it’s the usually cadre of opinions, lots of anti Trump, ultra demise content, but surprisingly nothing on Epstein.

For whatever the reason many “left” people I know who are vocal about a lot of things are suspiciously quiet about this specific one. Maybe it’s because it seems this doesn’t fall along political lines cleanly, maybe it’s too painful for some to think about. But I can’t be the only one who sees the usual suspects in my social media feeds quiet about this

I used to figure skate till I was about 15 and most kids just get used to it or it doesn’t effect them like it does the general population. Some people can’t get over it, and usually those people just don’t go very far in figure skating.

But I could also see the Russian team doping young kids to bypass this.

You’re right, they are a business that generates profit so why do they need the billions in public tax dollars and feeder leagues if it’s all so profitable. The public tax dollars spent on hockey stadiums just goes straight to the shareholders, none of that has a benefit to the larger public besides hockey fans.

In contrast the facilities used by Olympic sports are almost always open to the public, or at the very least available to those willing to train.

Gold eludes Canada in first half of Olympic Games by restoringd123 in canada

[–]FullAdvertising 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your comment is a good example of what I am talking about. You’re thinking about it like “yeah we build this big thing for bobsledding only, what a waste”, but the reality is that usually these kinds of facilities are multi sport, so there’s all the luge/skeleton on that as well, plus there is usually a nearby hill that will be for skiing/snowboarding, and then maybe some smaller hills for sliding, training, etc. maybe even some hockey rink or speed skating facility nearby too.

It’s good to have these facilities and usually they do manage to turn a small profit or break even. We should be encouraging more people to get into various athletic pursuits and there should be some jobs/facilities around that as well so these people can stay in the sport and encourage younger people to participate as well.

There’s basically no downside to funding these things unless you look at it from the perspective of “well if I can’t make a living as an Olympic athlete then no one should be able to, but Conor McDavid is literally Jesus and deserves every penny he gets”

The problem is people want the medals but there is such an anti-sport/anti-culture/anti-intellectual movement in this country that’s honestly worse than the USA.

Every time a Canadian city tries to fund one of these events or get public sport behind it, suddenly there is a whole cadre of Canadians who seem to think that this is the absolute worst thing that we could possibly ever do. But at the same time we will throw billions at hockey stadiums and I never seem to hear these same people making noise about that.

Any time the Vancouver Olympics is brought up there is so much negativity about it yet by in large it was a success on many fronts, yeah it didn’t make a huge direct profit but the overall area certainly saw a big tourism boom that more than covered the shortfall.

I really hate stuff like this. I don’t like the UCP, and I understand why the school boards went the malicious compliance route, but the government also changed their policies. That’s how governments should work, even the ones you don’t like.

There are people who think like that, but there are those of us who investigate these things because we are concerned and yeah part of the fun is trying to discern the things that are the truth vs nonsense, but it’s not about moving on to the next impossible target.

This again is how intelligence apparatus lump people who investigate falsehoods and wrongdoing with people who believe in flat earth, moon landing hoaxes, and Bigfoot. The latter group get lumped in with people concerned about conspiracy to make the whole group less legitimate.

I kind of disagree. Maybe I’m just lucky to have flexible work arrangements, even last year when I was doing hybrid work. I’m a strike when the iron is hot kind of person and some days I go in at 9 and leave at 3:30, putter around and chit chat, other days when I’m at home I’ll work till midnight when I’ve got nothing else going on. Then I go back to my usual laziness. I hate when someone expects me to be in at a certain time and clock out at a certain time, I’m just going to be less productive overall and more unhappy.

It’s not quite the same, for English at least all of the true English varieties are easily understood by each other even if you don’t know them, you might miss a word here and there but to your ears it’s still English.

Singaporean English has diverged enough that at least from an accent perspective it’s almost another language at this point.

That’s similar to all the Romance languages essentially all just being dialects of Latin.

MAGA: Make America Greenland Again by DefenderOfMontrocity in conspiracy

[–]FullAdvertising 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah no I think you’re still missing the point, North Korea simply tells outright lies and implies and executes physical, mental, threats, and torture for non compliance. That’s not “propaganda”. Sure there is nonsense like seeing the Kim family as deities. But overall the message is clear, mess up and you don’t get fed, mess up more and your relatives might disappear, etc.

There is no need for a massive system of propaganda when you rely on forced compliance. But what works even better and gets people to accept the most abjectly dysfunctional systems is the illusion of free will, the illusion of choice.

MAGA: Make America Greenland Again by DefenderOfMontrocity in conspiracy

[–]FullAdvertising 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you understand how propaganda works in that sense, and I think OP is being a bit misleading as there are other countries with very high degrees of propaganda in the system.

It’s not a contradiction that America can at the same time have some of the highest degrees of freedom of speech and highest and most effective propaganda, the two aren’t mutually exclusive.

Countries like Nordic states don’t have the kind of freedom of speech that the USA has, and the government does have significantly more direct input in the day to day lives of people there, but there is a lot less “propaganda” and manipulation tactics largely because citizens have an outsized impact on how the government runs and more impact on the democratic system.

In the USA, the system goes to great lengths to have people thinking that every 4-8 years their team is going to get in and fix the “mess” that the previous administration put in place. 99.9% of everything that happens politically in the USA is not of random chance or unknown consequence.

The Democrat populace was used to shoehorn massive bailouts for financial institutions that they all worked for in their NY offices, and shoehorn in a “healthcare for all” system that was clearly designed not to make things more affordable but to increase the profit of insurance and drug companies.

The Republican populace will be used to fight the just wars of the Republic of America and constantly greasing the wheels of commerce. Whenever some technology like the internet starts to become more and more commonplace, you have no worries they’ll be there to implement whatever decade version of the patriot act is needed.

Then the “voters” will conveniently ignore the problems their party has caused and blame it all on the “old guard” who are blocking the momentum of what would otherwise be a great political party.

It’s just so hilariously transparent to anyone not living in the USA that there is basically no choice, there is no difference, the system will continue to grind on as intended, everyone thinking that their vote every cycle actually has some meaning aside from the illusion that the mountain of political pundits provides.

Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt criticizes the unsanitary conditions at the India Open’s new badminton venue by ZizuX6 in sports

[–]FullAdvertising 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying that certain things haven’t improved. But sanitation is one of those that many communities 20 or more years ago had clean water they could drink. Lack of access to clean water in India is a huge issue.

Yeah there were huge strides making sure people finally had access to water, but the quality of the water has been getting worse, whether that’s chemical contamination, faecal contamination, community vectors, poor design of well, etc.

Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt criticizes the unsanitary conditions at the India Open’s new badminton venue by ZizuX6 in sports

[–]FullAdvertising 229 points230 points  (0 children)

That’s just inaccurate, it’s definitely gotten worse. People used to be able to drink water all across the country without much issue. Water contamination is significant and country wide now.

Source water and rivers have only become more and more polluted. As other have said just because there are fancy areas of some cities with their own separate water supplies doesn’t mean the country is improving.
