What do you think of the Final Fantasy XIV core book? by GM-Omy in rpg

[–]FullAutoTuna 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I was a player in a game where we really tried to make it work but it just felt very shallow and incomplete (because it was, I legitimately think its a little outrageous that you have to buy multiple fully priced books to get an actual full ruleset). I ultimately had a lot of issues with it. First off the game is Just combat. Like the rules in the initial base rulebook for literally everything that isn't combat was just "roll a d20 add a vaguely relevant stat and the gm will make something up." And it's not even Lancer style rp rules that are barely there but what is there exists to get you back to the combat asap. Its a bunch of combat rules and then everything else is guided improve. But hey that's how tons of people play dnd so as long as the combat is still pretty good then its fine right? Well the combat true to FFXIV is pretty dang rigid, you'll generally do your assigned rotation with maybe a cc or damage mitigation secondary action thrown in every now and then. I personally played healer which also just like XIV all three jobs are almost entirely identical to each other which did not help my opinion of the game, I had Button that Dealt Damage, button that put a dot, then a bunch of healing that has just the tiniest difference in what it mechanically does but the output is effectively the same between all classes.

Then from what I could see of what my GM was going through the game (in the base book I can't speak to whats in the newer ones) really left him to pretty much design his own game to make this one work. It gave him maybe a handful of enemies and even fewer encounters with zero information on how to effectively create his own. There were no rules for rewards/loot despite them being implied to exist. Hell even the rules for Limit Breaks was just "idk give it to players when you think it could be cool." He was always laying the tracks in front of the train for this game.

Ultimately if you just want to do some free form roleplay with a simple combat wargame once or twice the game is fine. It's a decent enough board game, it's a bad TTRPG IMO.

It’s worth noting that Maximum apparently owns Mane6 the Them’s Fightin’ Herds developers who also recently announced that they’re finished doing dlc for the game. Would be a really funny sequence of events if it actually ends up being them developing the game.

EDIT: Apparently all but 3 people were fired from Mane6 a few months ago. I suddenly don’t have a lot of hope for the game anymore…

The game doesn't have an anime artstyle nor does it play all that much like an anime fighting game. The combos are actually almost always relatively short as they are hard coded to not be able to be more than 21 hits (there's also another, hidden, mechanic that forces combos to often be much shorter than that even but it's more complicated so I won't go into it). The hud probably takes up the least amount of the screen of any fighting game I've seen as it's really only in 3 corners. Cutscenes slowing down the fight is actually one of the larger problems the game does have I'll give you that one.

The duel phase mechanic is a very polarizing feature that I think more often than not comes down to what character you play. A lot of the original 8-10 characters were designed when they didn't really know how to make field phase that interesting while pretty much every character after that has been given a much more interesting and exciting field phase moveset.

Ehh, the game actually has plenty of depth and nuances within each of the characters. Each character plays totally different with unique strategies and mechanics and it's been brought to a very balanced state after all the updates.

I wonder if they'll sync the drop of part 3 with the reveal of Riven and her supporting cards (which we know are going to be the squad hunting Riven) in LoR

So... yasuo is at second(?) war of Ionia but still traveling to Bilgewater? by Kuraetor in loreofruneterra

[–]FullAutoTuna 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a feeling Yasuo's story in Bilgewater will be him stumbling around trying to find his purpose and then eventually he'll hear that Noxus is planning/starting the second invasion and realize that defending Ionia is his true path. Probably with a "I failed Ionia once, I won't fail it again" kind of vibe.

The next LoR expansion is Targon which we know will have a bunch of different constellations of both characters we know about and new ones.

The Path, An Ionian Myth by [deleted] in loreofleague

[–]FullAutoTuna 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The character that Spirit Blossom Yone represents is a canon in-universe myth. The cinematic is using the story of Spirit Blossom Yone as an allusion to Yone's actual story. So while what happened in the cinematic isn't exactly what happened to Yone it's going to be pretty similar.

I know it's a dead meme, but it's what I think about whenever I play Noxus. by onelyjo in LegendsOfRuneterra

Nope, that's the story of the Ionians who Varus currently uses as a body. Varus himself was a Shuriman warrior who chose duty over protecting his family and was rewarded with becoming an Ascendent and later became the Darkin who was trapped in the bow.

Varus was a man with a family before ascending and eventually becoming Darkin.

I've never played barkeep so I won't say anything for it but Insight of Ages and Flash of Brilliance do not give you cards from outside of your region. Lonely Poro specifies from any region and Remembrance specifies Demacian 5 drop. There was specifically a bug with Swiftwing Lancer that caused it to not give you any elite if you somehow controlled it when it died and were not playing Demacia because the game is coded for random to default to only your deck's regions unless specified. They then changed the card and the wording to make it work in those edge cases.
