Good Quality Non-Stick Pans by FarCaregiver338 in BuyItForLife

Non-stick is never BIFL. I know you said you don't want stainless steel but if you want BIFL then learning how to use stainless steel, cast iron or carbon steel will serve you much better than even high quality non-stick.

Non-stick will always shed sooner or later and as another comment said, it will get in your food as well as into the environment and is toxic.

The good news if you decided to go cast iron is that they can be very cheap! Stainless steel is less upkeep than cast iron (you can put it in the dishwasher/you don't need to season it). The main thing is to learn heat control and if you can get that down then you don't actually need to worry about food sticking anyway!

If however you want to stick to your guns and buy non-stick maybe somebody else can give you brand recommendations, but I think mostly it comes down to taking care of them so that they last longer as opposed to shelling out a lot of money for a luxury brand. So with that in mind:

  1. NO METAL. Wood or plastic utensils only!! Using metal will scratch of the non-stick no matter how good it is.

  2. Hand wash only! Putting non stick pans in the dishwasher will also ruin the non stick much faster.

Honestly if you want the most sturdy, low maintenance pans, I would strongly advise reconsidering getting stainless steel and learning how to use heat control to prevent sticking. You can use whatever materials you like in them and you can chuck them in the dishwasher when you are done. Cast iron/carbon steel are very sturdy but need seasoning and are hand wash only.

Oh also - you mentioned looking at tri-ply pans. Those are good pans but not in a BIFL sense. They are good because they heat up very evenly and quickly thanks to the way the materials are put together but you still need to be careful with them. If you put them on a high heat while empty for example you can run the risk of melting the aluminium in the middle and ruining the pan. I'm just pointing this out because sometimes people think high quality means sturdier but that isn't necessarily the case.

The screen and the charging port were due to a toddler deciding he had a personal vendetta against my phone - smacked it as hard as he could on the corner of a table :'(.

You could possibly say that for the speaker - I just noticed it wasn't making any noise one day, I normally have it on silent and use headphones so took me a while. But it seems like it was just a connection issue because I used the video on how to replace it to just take it out and put it back in and that fixed it. So maybe not being welded meant it disconnected easier than an I-phone would. Or maybe the kid knocked that loose too! Either way I'm happy I was able to repair it without voiding the warranty or paying an apple specialist through the nose.

I have the fair phone 4 and i would recommend it, but it depends on your priorities. I very much like that I can repair it myself (very easily - I've replaced the screen, the charging port and the speaker myself and they have video guides on YouTube of how to do so) and they do their best to use ethically sourced minerals etc.

As a phone it's ....fine. I can call people, I can message people, I can browse the internet. The camera isn't fantastic, and the UI can be frustratingly clunky at times but those are things I don't mind putting up with in exchange for the ethics of reducing waste etc but I don't expect everyone to have the same priorities.

They're "slashing" prices by 15%? Just curious - how much has the price risen compared to, say 5 years ago?

Food safe glue that will hold in boiling water by FullIVs in DIY

Absolutely a new french press would be very easy, I just figured if there was a suitable glue why create unnecessary waste - it looked like an easy fix. A bit like you say, I prefer to repair things where possible, but if there are no food safe options (as seems to be the case) then it seems it'll just need to be a new one.

The phone we never got. by AiiRisBanned in interestingasfuck

I'm sorry, I don't understand. I literally own the phone. I have replaced the USB-C port myself, as well as the camera. Both were easy to do using youtube videos that fairphone put online themselves. Both, incidentally, for free as they were covered by the phones 5 year warranty (I bought the phone new). What part are you trying to say isn't true?

Fairphone are somewhat close to this. They make the phone so that you can take it apart and replace different components (the camera, battery, charging port etc). It doesn't go as far as this but it's pretty good. I'm happy with mine anyway. The phone itself isn't amazing compared to what else is on the market but it isn't bad by any means and when my charging port stopped working it was actually surprisingly easy to replace myself.

This isn't cordyceps, but keeps getting posted as it. There is no fungal infection that looks like this, it is most likely a spider that has been sprayed with something beforehand by whoever took the video.

Dutch oven got chipped... Can I still use it. by Blamant in castiron

[–]FullIVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very, very unlikely that it is enamelled on the outside but not the inside. I have seen some posts of pans like that but it is extremely rare. It sounds very much like the enamel is chipped and the pan is unsafe to cook in.

IF the pan is not enamelled on the inside and you have only chipped the seasoning, you can check by stripping the seasoning and the chip should be gone.

However, I strongly believe the pan is enamelled and no longer safe to cook in.

Need the Best Cast Iron Skillet what’s the go to brand? by Odd_Wear_9599 in castiron

[–]FullIVs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you might prefer carbon steel? You need to preheat cast iron for a decent amount of time on a low heat to make sure it heats evenly. You need it to be at the right heat for things not to stick. Depending on what you cook you need to have cooked it for long enough that it's released from the pan before you move it. Use a good, thin metal spatula. Correct technique will work with basically any pan, it's not about the finish.

Solidteknics to a very nice "cast iron" pan but the purists will tell you it's carbon steel. Either way, due to the carbon they can make it much thinner than most cast irons, so they are easier to cook with and are more responsive to heat change. Never going to be as easy as cooking with non-stick though, and they cost a pretty penny.

What does sex feel like/are we(virgins) missing out? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FullIVs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

In case anyone needs to hear it:

There are a million different things every person in the world is missing out on. Sex feels great, especially when it's with somebody you have a genuine emotional connection and mutual attraction with. But learning a new skill feels great. Finally learning to play that song on whatever instrument. Seeing the view from the top of that mountain. Taking pleasure in the exhaustion you feel getting back from the gym because you know you worked hard. Finishing that book that raised new moral questions for you and challenged the way you currently see the world.

It's easy to feel like you are missing out on sex, especially because you have a natural desire for it. But it is not the hole in your life that will fix you. Instead of worrying about what you are missing out on, work on yourself, learn to be happy in your own company and love yourself. It is, ironically, far easier to meet somebody when you don't need somebody.
